  1. I agree in general Johnster but from Thirsk all the way up the dale way was NER to Hawes Junction
  2. As far as I remember Herriots practice was / is in Thirsk 100% NER / LNER turf
  3. A while back I was reading and studying driving trailers/ driving vans for push pull services, I seem to remember seeing a driving trailer made from a mk 2 or 3 coach where the corridor connection was plated off and a window fitted ( plus controls inside) . the trailer only had ONE single window in the center, not three across the back as is normal. I cannot find a picture of it now and am wondering if I imagined it.
  4. What Mike G says and perhaps the quality of the track may be an issue, on my last layout I could not get ALL of the Peco Code 100 flexy track i needed, so I also bought some other brand (6 pieces) to make up the shortfall, If i had any bad running issues it was ALWAYS the other 6 pieces that had gotten filthy or oxidised. I ended up having to dig them out and replaced them with Peco stuff.
  5. I actually mean these hideous toylike contraptions
  6. Ok edited my post, what ever those dreadful hook type couplings are called that come clagged into the NEM pockets are then.
  7. I'm going to put my oar into this puddle of posts, and I'm not trying to offend any of you, BUT, I see the models that you guys build from scratch or spend a lot of money buying, then I see the millions of workbench reports of the hours and hours of attention you spend detailing, repainting, upgrading them etc. Then I get to see these truly mobile works of art you created, creations insanely detailed and realistic. Your creations are then ran on layouts that are amazing, superb quality and truly impressive. Then I see hook type couplings which were past their best in the 1960s and think what could have been. Just about everywhere else has better coupling systems or at least far less ugly and intrusive than the UKs dreadful standard coupling. In the last 20 year my hopes were raised when the bigger UK companies started fitting NEM 362 pockets ( often the wrong height though) and thought YES progress is coming only to see the NEM pockets stuffed with ....... Hook couplings taking us straight back to TOY levels of detail. I'm only one modeller with only a tiny fraction of the skill most of you have, and when I see these superb models on equally superb layouts connected with horn hook couplings I cannot help but think YES they do totally ruin everything you artisans created. I welcome these magnetic couplings as I did the Kadees because ANYTHING including a piece of string is better looking than the hook monstrosities we still use today.
  8. So guys thanks one and all for the numerous informative replies about my coupling height issues. I think i will just have to avoid buying any more Bachmann gear, The bulk of Hornby and Dapol stock when I fit with Kadees 17 to 20 do line up quite well with the Kadee height gauge, only some OLDER stuff appears to be a " bit" out where as Bachmann go no where near. I dont have the skills that many of you folks have for chopping up stock and fitting draft boxes so I'll go the easy route , no more Bachmann I would add that though UK 00 models have massively improved since the 1980s I now believe they are still behind many European, American and Japanese manufacturers when it comes to standards (and price)
  9. Yes but not with NEM Swallow tail connections. In NEM there is only 17 18 19 and 20 NEM tailed coupling which are different lengths, but not different head heights.
  10. I'm going slowly insane trying to get my locos and rolling stock fitted with NEM tail Kadees 17, 18 and 19, It appears that all the blasted Bachmann coaches are at one height whilst Hornby and Dapol appear to use assorted heights for their coupling pockets. My Hornby Adams Radials NEM sockets apear to be far to low even for Hornby coaches ???? only attaching about 50% of the coupler head, and Bachmann are even worse with only about 30% contact . If the yanks can and do stick within NEM specs why cannot our manufacturers. I've got ONE steam loco the Adams Radial fitted with #18s and I own 8 coaches NONE of which will couple properly ( same height) with the Loco. I'm seriously beginning regretting coming over from 0-16.5 to 00 as 00 is even more messed up than the piecemeal standards of 0-16.5.
  11. Hi guys, On some (OLDER) branchlines that (A) have steep inclines I read that the normal protocol is to use the loco to PUSH rather than pull the carriages, (B) and on a few branchlines with no run round loops the train stays at the back of train and simply pushes the train back to where it came from. So I wondered did they all have to have driving cabs in the last coach or did the guards cabin do the job, or was it still left to the driver in the loco to operate the train from the back?? or something else?? Thanks in advance.
  12. Hi guys I'm struggling to find suitable metal insulated for DC use 11 mm wheel sets for my Fleischmann Magic train 0e rolling stock which is fitted with plastic wheel sets. If any of you have any modern Fleishmann H0 wagons with 11 mm wheels could you please measure the axle to axle length of one for me ? Fleischmann has them in 23.5 length, 24.02, 25 mm axle tip to tip length.
  13. Great I shall try and track down a copy, thanks everyone for your help.
