That's the trouble with wikipedia - sometimes you need to read it more closely.

    Hornby 66s

I don't think the liveries of the 66's was by chance. On the whole, they are the 'specials', not some banger EWS red and gold. Going backwards, there was much demand for the Bachmann 66 Evening Star and it commanded a premium price. Witness the Hattons 66 thread where there was great excitement about their LL 66 and then much demand for Flying Dustman to follow. It not a huge leap of thought to think Hornby saw the demand for these liveries and the price people were prepared to pay and acted to get in quick to snap up the many modelers who wanted these particular liveries *first* over a high spec model. I'm pretty sure that the reason the TPE 68 flew off the shelves was its livery rather than its fidelity as a model or that it fitted a modeler's layout. We all love a bargain and for some, perhaps getting that livery at a price they could more comfortably afford was far more important. Going forwards, perhaps Hornby will think about the remaining weird and wonderful liveries that have yet to be produced and plaster these onto their models.
  4. Glad you got a good deal and hope you like it. Don't write off the plain drs blue. I went to derails for the tpe and came out with the plain blue (as well). Something about that shade of blue that makes for a really classy model. Think Duchess of Sussex Vs Duchess of Cambridge!

    Hornby 66s

Perhaps, but I'd venture that they're a success because (a) the model is pretty reasonable and (b) cheap. I bet some of these barely turn a wheel, but go straight onto the display shelf. Fair enough, each to their own and Hornby won't care one jot. But I wonder what the other manufacturers are now thinking.
  6. Stobarts have landed. Collets models seem to be the cheapest

  8. You need to define your standard for accuracy. For some, a model that looks very near the real thing is accurate. For others, accuracy is measured to the nth. Back to the 59, until a few posts ago, we were raving about what a fine model it was. Now, because someone has pointed out an issue with the door, it's toys out of the pram. So was the model accurate before and now it's not? Is something accurate until someone points out that it isn't? Interesting conundrum isn't it?

Pondering binning my order for the Hattons BR blue and jumping ship to the Hornby version. The money saved goes some way to another Accurascale 92.
  11. Well, we don't even know if the Hattons 66 is going to be "accurate" just yet, only that it's twice the price of the Hornby. The Dapol 59 sits somewhere in the middle. So there is a minor goof. IIRC, the same holds true with some of the Bachmann MK2, the Oxford rail MK3, and so on. Accuracy is subjective
  12. I think this was discussed but decided against. The accurascale model will be having one

  17. Indeed. Time will tell, but I'm finding that whilst I can stand a hefty price hike on a loco, it's getting harder to bear it on rolling stock. I watch the bargains thread with a keen eye.
