Preparations are afoot for SWAG at the weekend, the W & U coach has been weathered so should be in service,  the warranty well and truly blown. I did remember to take some photos at each stage so if there is  interest I will post on how "I done it."

As a taste of SWAG here is the J72 on a short goods showing much of the layout.

I was catching up on your layout topic just recently, as with excellent timing a new post had appeared when I first looked after we got home. I see it is starting to get out and about so hope to see it in the flesh at some point!

So far booked for the  RMWeb SWAG get together in a couple of weeks then RailEx in Taunton towards the end of the year. Would be nice to do some more; closer to home would be great!

A short Wedding Anniversary holiday in Derbyshire was, for a holiday in the heart of Midland territory, remarkably railway-free: the main objects being Hardwick Hall and Bolsover Castle. We were staying in Middleton, so there was a late afternoon stroll (in LNWR territory) down and up the incline and then along through Hopton Tunnel and back. The Midland D663A wagon posed at Middleton Top is in a rather decrepit condition:

... which draws attention to the recycling of D299 corner plates.

(The less said about the black buffer guides and solebar ironwork the better.)

On our return, there was a small parcel from Mousa Models awaiting my attention. Here's the D204 Loco coal wagon - once again illustrating the trickiness of photographing unpainted resin:

Ah, my neck of the woods! Both in model form and where I live (Wirksworth). Hope you had an enjoyable break.

  4. Backscene development.

Anyone tried this before? I’ve got some plain 100% cotton fabric, using cold dye (blue and grey) and deliberately doing a crap job of it so it remains patchy.

I’ll post results up when it done!

  5. For those who have recently joined us on this thread I'm organising a RMWeb Midland Area Group event in Derby on 22nd September this year. MAG will follow a similar format to SWAG in Taunton albeit a little more compact, but will give the opportunity for us Midlands types to get together in the real world and also check out some excellent modelling.

The full line up and updates will be posted on MAG's thread (link below) - do give this a follow and hope to see you there!

  6. I hope everyone is having a good Easter?

The line up for the 22nd September MAG event in Derby is now firmed up. I'm going to post details here once this month's SWAG event has passed as I don't want to detract from that, plus every spare moment is being used to prepare MIddleton Top for the event at the moment.

I'm keeping this first event fairly simple to test the water but we have got some great modelling from a broad selection of scales featured. If it goes as planned I have some ideas for a larger 2025 event, so do spread the word and direct folk here for up dates.

    Thanks

    Jay

  7. I’ve returned from Fuerte Ventura nicely toasted and have had a productive couple of days finalizing the MAG members day in Derby (details to be announced post SWAG) and finally had a full day on Middleton Top. I have another two half days set aside this week with the hope of constructing the fiddle yard. Materials have also been ordered for the backscene and fascia but will be a couple of weeks before installation can happen as I have a gypsy punk album to record all next week. Feeling confident it’s all on track for SWAG now, which is nice.

  8. There are some excellent photos popping up on the Cromford and High Peak Facebook page from private collections at the moment. Such as this Deeley residing next to Sheep Pasture shed. The Deeley was a short term replacement for the Kitson that ended up in someone’s garden after a points mishap at Steeple Grange.
The Final Push at Middleton Top will resume with two days put aside for modelling next week once I’m back from sunning myself in Fuerte Ventura!

    Morning all,

Well, the countdown continues and this weekends featured layout is @JustinDean's nod to the Cromford and High Peak Railway.

Those SWAG regulars may well remember @Alister_G's lovely Ladmanlow Sidings from a couple of years ago.

Well this year, Jay brings more Cromfordy in the shape of Middleton Top.  I have to say, he is really capturing the essence of this arguably iconic location by combining scratchbuilt structures along with faithfully modelled scenery.

Locos and stock on this much missed line were a real mixture of some quite archaic small* tank engines which made this line somewhat idiosyncratic. To model this, Jay has combined detailed ready to run locos with suitable kit built items.

Wagons are a similar mixture and they also include some lovely 3D printed water tanks.

I know he is still beavering away on the layout so I for one am looking forward to seeing the fruits of his labours.

Here then are a few images by Jay to whet the appetite. Remember, this is very much a work in progress....( the paint might even still be wet on the day so be careful !).

    Rob.

    * Austerity 0.6.0st are not small. Bloody great bruisers of locos actually and in some quarters are considered honorary Panniers..........

    Thanks Rob!

There may be wet bits on the layout. I’ve got a job/snag list as long as yer arm. On the next few weeks I’ve also got to squeeze in a holiday, moving out of my house and recording an album so definitely feeling the pressure!

On that basis I might even be persuaded to go into business selling the etches that I designed for the same loco. That would recover the costs several times over!

But then again, that wasn't the point of doing them in the first place!

    G

Yes I thought of you and those etches when I saw this. Is there a current kit for the NLR tank?

I bought the ACE kit a while back but haven’t built it up yet….not sure if that’s still an available.

  11. Madness, or not madness?

£280 for an unpainted 4mm scale NLR tank that’s a none runner, with broken steps and incorrect wheels.

Bonkers. In reality, it's probably worth around £150 in it's present condition.

But ultimately, it's worth what someone will pay on the day.....in this case, rather a lot.

However, that seller is worth following.

    Rob

Someone was happy to pay £280 for that.
    Mind blown.

Funnily enough, fitting an outer skirt to the afflicted side is on the cards for this summer, I hope I have caught it in time. Hopefully it will have the double effect of keeping the leaf litter off the joist and keeping it dry. I fitted a gutter to that side many years ago which helped reduce the amount of water falling to the floor but with the intensity of rains storms these days it needs more assistance.

    Fingers crossed you sort it!

Give it another 10 years. It's the rain landing on the pad that the joists are in direct contact with that's the issue (in my case 1 ton of Type1, sand and slabs). The underneath of my >20yr old workshop is dry, sure enough. The outer floor joists however are starting to succumb to some rot where they are are exposed to the weather, despite lots of creosoting. Having a lot of leaf litter to contend with doesn't help either.

Ah I see your issue there.
I have a layer of neoprene rubber between the floor joists and base. Also the outer wall forms a skirt extending below the top on the concrete pad. It’ll be fine 10 years from now.
