  1. I've keen on the Hornby R3555 - 'Sir William A. Stanier F.R.S' Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 - what do members think is the best deal on this decidedly expensive but beautiful loco? Out in the wilds of Scotland, I don't have a dealer anywhere at hand. Thanks Neil
  2. Is it etiquette to ask what members think is the best deal on this decidedly expensive but beautiful loco? Out in the wilds of Scotland, I don't have a dealer anywhere at hand. Thanks Neil
  3. With my skills I shan't like the look of it at all, once I've painted it. I shall stick to painting walls and doors.
  4. I think the short list consists of that NRM Midland Compound, Olton hall, and the Bachmann Patriot Sir Frank Ree. And a Coronation, dependent on funds. Now all I have to do is find one. In the meantime I have written to the Directors of GWR, complaining of their policy of painting interesting engines green.
  5. Many of the red engines seem out of production. Difficult to understand. All engines should be red.
  6. Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen. The only thing against that Coronation is the price!
  7. I like that! Naturally the thing seems unavailable now.
  8. You can tell from the title I'm not the most discriminating enthusiast. I'm not modelling anything in particular, just building a train set that has some visual appeal. I would like to add a red (maroon or crimson, are they different?) steam locomotive to my OO gauge set. I'd like something recently designed, with loco drive, Hornby or B****ann. Would anyone like to recommend something? Thanks very much.

  10. I will need to add two analogue power sources to my layout. The options are to buy a Gaugemaster Dual control - transformer and two controllers built into the same box; or to buy a pair of their "Combi" packages - each consists of a wall-mount transformer and single controller. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to either option? Thanks Neil
  11. The modern super-detailed stuff is absolutely stunning in its fine modelling, but as you say, the components are terribly fragile. Is there such a thing as too detailed? I'm increasingly reluctant to handle my best locos, and am wondering if I wouldn't be happier on Planet Railroad.
  12. I would like three or four coaches in the dark red (is that "crimson lake" or maroon, or are they the same thing?) livery of LMS. I'm not modelling any particular period or line, so the only requirements are that they look smart, have metal wheels (does this rule out Railroad models?) and they are cheap. Although I have put this on the Hornby section, Bachmann models are equally acceptable. Any recommendations gratefully received.
  13. Thanks for all the comment, guys, and especial thanks to Apollanaut for the photographs of the loco. I have just written a polite letter to Santa. Neil
  14. A retailer has what appears to be an attractive offer on a loco+coaches package - Hornby's R3299 "Going Home", an LMS Black Five, and three maroon LMS coaches. The coaches look to be from their more detailed range. But what about the Black Five model? Is it also well detailed, and does it have a reasonably powerful motor? Any help would be appreciated - I'm a very long way from any railway model shop!
  15. Thanks very much for all the helpful comments. Much appreciated. Some progress to report - I took courage in both hands, and removed one pair of wheels from a Collett coach. There was a small ball of fur wrapped around each bearing. I have now cleaned out the bearing cups, wiped off the unnecessary oil, reassembled, and repeated the process for each coach. They're definitely running much better. I have also issued a written warning to the cat, so there shouldn't be any repetition of the problem. There's definitely some hair in the bars connecting the wheels on the loco, so that's the next task. Once I have done that, what's a suitable cleaner for the wheels and rails?
