Many years ago, I worked occasionally with a fireman, when tailgating was a regular event in our traffic locked town. He drove a pump escape (the ones with the big-wheeled ladders) and one day on a call, weaving his way through traffic when someone stepped off the pavement. He hit the brakes and stopped, but was immediately pushed forward . The officer and the rest of the crew got down to investigate and found an expensive car with two large semi-circular grooves in the front end and water and oil pouring out underneath. While he called back to HQ to ask for another appliance to be sent to the call, the rest of the crew discussed the matter and summed it up as "You've got a problem mate". John

When I became involved with a case of low level fraud in work, the policeman handling the investigation told me that the first move was to look at the person's travel and meals claims as that was where the first fraud usually occurred. The case ended up with trigamy (?) - three wives between London and the West Country, a fake suicide, and wide-scale theft. The last time I met the policeman, he told me that next time I suspected something similar that I should keep quiet, as they didn't have enough staff to handle an investigation which had eventually involved four forces

As might be expected in the present circumstances, there have been a number of changes to the list of layouts and traders. Our exhibition manager has been working hard and although one layout cannot attend, we are now up to 12 layouts and 9 traders. The layouts which have been booked are White Bell (00), Ousewell St Juude (EM), London New Street (00), Rossiter Rise (00), Prospect Wharf and Yard (EM), Triang Transcontinental (00), Reich Brewery 1946 (HO) , Soller (Z), Maddaford (00), Tawney Halt (0), Douglas Fields (N) and ERC's Tanglewood Common (00). The traders are Cadogan Hobbies, Round in Circles, Reg Henderson, AE Millson Books, Past & Present Toys, Dave's Books and Models, the BR Standard Group, Epping & Ongar Railway and the club's S/H stand. We hope that this will be the list 'on the day' and we will welcome all to what has been called "a small but friendly show" John

There will be 12 layouts, including 'Z', 'HO', 'OO' and 'EM', together with traders and societies. The Exhibition is open from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm, admission is £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children (11-18), under 11's free The Hall is wheelchair accessible, and is 10 minutes from J26 of the M25, (car parking is free), or it is a short walk from Theydon Bois (Central Line) Station. Light refreshments will be available. The sources used to produce the list (which now runs to some 5000 entries) are varied, including British and US Official Histories, Army Council Instructions and Admiralty Fleet Orders, Railway Clearing House Handbook of Stations 1938, 1949,. 1956 and 1962, Parliamentary Debates and Reports, publications of the Industrial Railway Society and others The availability of material on the Internet has provided many references, from republished original documents to the websites of local historical societies. All references have, wherever possible, been crossmatched

About 20 years ago, I began to compile a list as an attempt to identify, initially from published accounts, those wartime depots (excluding operational bases such as barracks, airfields, radar stations and dockyards),which were rail served (these are underlined in the atached list). However the sources used revealed so many service establishments that it was decided to list all those which may have generated or received rail traffic, and to try to identify, and separate out, those with rail access later. When I left Wales to start work at the Ministry of Defence in 19.. , I was living in a bedsit and normally wore a West Mon (Pontypool) school tie to work, as its blue, green, red and yellow stripes went with any colour shirt. I was waiting in the lift to go to the fourth floor when an elderly gentleman dived in, and as the lift began its upward journey, he carefully looked me up and down and as we passed the second floor, eventually asked "young man, when did you serve with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders ?" I pondered for a moment, then told him that while to A&SH were raised in 1794, West Mon was a Haberdashers School which had its origins in the 17th Century, so why were they wearing 'my' tie. He immediately pressed the button to stop the lift at the next floor - and I never saw him again. I often wore the tie in later years, but never got a reaction at meetings John

If you are travelling by car from the North (Epping) direction, Theydon Road/Piercing Hill, the short cut from the Bell Common at Epping, will be closed for major road works. It will be necessary to continue South on the B1393 to the Miller & Carter Steakhouse at the Wake Arms roundabout, then turn left on the B172 to Theydon Bois. John

Theydon Bois is currently suffering a blockage of unknown duration on the B172 (Coppice Row) following a ram raid on Tesco. A short section of Coppice Row in the centre of Theydon is closed, diversions have been signposted from the Abridge direction. If you plan to come to what has been called “a small but friendly” exhibition, please allow a little extra time for the diversions and traffic disruption, but just to whet your appetite, we have twelve layouts ranging from Z through N, HO, OO, EM to G, five trade stands offering books, road and rail models, kits and kit-built, wagon loads, transport related toys, plus the Club's own pre-owned stall. 40 years ago we bought our first house, built in the 20's and nothing done since. Father in Law and I began a refurbishment, and when we came to the kitchen, planned to do it in two stages. In the first stage we hung new kitchen cabinets and he did his standard test of gripping the central shelf in the cabinets and lifting himself from the floor (as he said, double banked tins of food weigh as much as me). Two years later, after FiL' s death, I started stage two, but when I hung on a cabinet, I ended on my back on the floor with the cabinet on top of me, with four bricks surely screwed to the corners, and four holes in the wall ...
