There was/is a Ford similar to that near where I lived in South Bedfordshire although it had a footbridge on one side

Sutton? Can't think of another in the area.

Been looking at the rear and wondering if I can retrofit a disk brake on the back?

Definitely not, frames designed for disc brakes are much stronger in the relevant places, one not designed for them will fail with potentially fatal consequences! 😱

Wheels also of course are also disc-brake specific.

last week saw me doing a bit of biking in Mallorca

Spring is the best time to visit Mallorca, not too hot, masses of wild flowers, and nightingales singing everywhere.

As for getting out, I continue to average around 150 miles a week, mostly on Tuesday and Thursday club rides. Usually manage one or two other rides as well, weather dependent.

We got really lucky with the weather, perfect conditions and couldn't have asked for a better day for it.

And all to yourselves by the look of it!

The aerodrome is the home of the Shuttleworth collection, which has a cafe that was well-used by walkers and cyclists, but has recently been closed to all except paying visitors to the museum, grrr...

Going back to this post last year, I'm happy to report that the Runway Café has been re-opened to the general public, as of 27th March, in spite of the fact I was told the loss of access was permanent. My guess is they've found that the café was not making enough money! Which is exactly what I told them would happen...

Popped out there for lunch with a couple of pals today just to make sure! Access to the museum and Swiss Garden is now through the gift shop, and the old public entrance on Hill Lane has been re-opened.

I missed this comment originally but agree with this. Having said that Parkside's standard buffers which are (I think) meant to be generic RCH, are a bit clunky compared to, say, Slaters and I usually replace them with something more typical of for each wagon.

I think (and I maybe wrong!) that most of Parkside's opens and vans have BR 4-ribbed buffers, which may not always be prototypical; however, this brake van has a representation of self-contained buffers which, as far as I can tell, are a pretty good match for the prototype.

I did discover that the sprung buffers won’t work as supplied. The securing nuts are not large enough being smaller than the holes in the bufferbeam. So the buffers would simply fall out.

Having built one of these myself, (as I'm sure have many others), I feel I should point out that the nuts aren't retained by the buffer beam, but by the buffer housing. I can confirm that the buffers do not fall out, not requiring any mods to the kit.

I note though that the roof is a bit warped! Hope you've been able to sort it out...

Actually I see from the latest pic that you have!

Is that something you're needing to do, Adrian?

I have a small shunting plank I built to DOGA fine standards some years back. If I was building it now I wouldn't go down that route, it's too much faff, but at the time I didn't know any better! I do quite like the layout though, and more recently have started getting in to loco building, hence the question.

247 Developments have some washers, with square holes, listed under the loco detailing parts

    They are listed as :-

G71 6 thou washers to convert Romford axle to 'OO' Fine Scale Standards.

These are just the thing, thanks!

Are you thinking of the washers going on the square ends of Markits axles? I'm assuming Tony just used EM axles and

the washers were just slipped on over the axles to control sideplay.

Yes, that was my initial thought, though clearly that would be a ridiculous idea! The amount of difference between 00 and EM back to back measurements would be far too much to take up by such a method. But what about those building layouts to DOGA fine standards , that require a back to back of 14.85 or so? Presumably they would be unable to use Markits wheels?

The EM gauge society, through its trade officer, sells a range of washers to suit 2mm and 1/8” axles and I believe Alan Gibson sells a range of washers too.  As far as I am aware, neither have square holes…

    cheers

    Nigel

Ah, then I fear I may have misunderstood. They're being used to prevent excessive side-play, rather than pushing the wheels further out on their axles...?

anyone else been out and about recently?

Not last week, far too cold and dangerous. I was out on a winter club run yesterday, though there was only three of us!

Another is planned for tomorrow, hopefully we'll get a few more out...

England lost a player to a yellow card

Forgive me for asking, but since when does a yellow card result in a sending-off?

    Did I miss something?

In fact, France had three players booked, England only one.

When I was young (in my teens) I built whitemetal kits using a 12V soldering iron running off an H&M Duette with the voltage turned down (trial and error). They came out fine and the soldering iron cost next to nothing. These days I seem to have lost the knack. But the Duette is still going strong 50 years on.

One tip, never use an RSU on whitemetal. The one thing is it not is temperature controlled. Mine can happily vaporise brass wire on brakegear if allowed to. But it is only thing I ever use on etched brass/nickel-silver. The regular soldering iron only ever comes out for track and electricals. An extra hand? - more like two.

Bought six when they were on half-price offer a while back.
