  1. Our (cycling!) club Christmas Lunch today, so just a short ride out to the venue... @Nearholmer appears to have had the best of the weather!
  2. This is a thread for cyclists, right? Or did I miss something?
  3. That'll learn me to read properly rather than skimming...
  4. I see now that your GWR wagon is not a shocbar, but a plain open wagon. On searching I've only managed to find one example... GWR 'Open A' 5 plank hybar The GWR shocbar has the same arrangement as the BR version, hence the confusion...
  5. Must be my eyesight, it looks to be on the outside to me... indeed, it can't be anywhere else, as the semi-circular bracket is fixed to the wagon end by four bolts, which would prevent the bar from moving very far at all if it were on the inside.
  6. That was my issue with the Slater's kit; the bar was fixed. Is it a trick of the light, or have you fitted the bar behind the semi-circular bracket? I think you'll find it should be in front...
  7. I have a friend who has Raynaud's disease who swears by them, uses them inside her cycling shoes. Hand-specific ones are available too, use inside your gloves. Why don't you google it?
  8. So, having had the etch in my possession for nearly a year, I though it might be about time I did something with it... Perhaps showing this might persuade others to order one, as apparently I'm so far the only one who has! In 7mm anyway... Here's the components made up... ...and fitted to the wagon body. The instructions say that fitting of the bar strapping is fiendish, and it's not wrong; I can't imaging what the 4mm version must be like!
  9. They are long-lasting, up to 10 hours apparently, so no need to wait until you're hands are already cold.
  10. If the heat pads don't work for you I can't see the gloves being any better...
  11. Sounds like what you need are some of those chemical hand-warmer pads. HotHands I think they're called.
  12. Ditto, though there was some fun to be had... riding home with a 25 mph tailwind was just fine! Shan't be out before Thursday next week by the look of it...
  13. Just watched my local news, there was quite an extensive piece on GBRf live from the Peterborough depot. Available on i-player of course... Wasn't sure whether to post here or on the TV forum! Ho hum...
  14. ...if drivers would use the damn things! Off topic again... sorry.
  15. I agree with much of what has been said about visibility etc., but I also think that many cars also lack visibility. Black, silver and white cars are very common, and can also 'disappear' in poor visibility situations, even with running lights. Perhaps they should also be fitted with 'hi-vis' equipment? Orange vests for cars anyone?
  16. Weren't me guv! I was out, leading our club run today, down into leafy Hertfordshire. No chance to stop for pics but did snap one of the pub garden at our destination... ...too cold to sit out for lunch! Not too far from Digswell viaduct as it happens.
  17. Ah, that would explain it, thanks! I think the link you provided might be incomplete though... it doesn't work
  18. On a similar theme, I recently bought a Micromot 60/E 12v drill which has a speed controller on the body. As I already had a 12v, 2 amp supply unit, I adapted this to run the drill. However, I find that the speed controller has no apparent effect. It seems to be either 'on' or 'off' with no change in the pitch of the motor. Does anybody know why this might be?
  19. Are you sure it doesn't say 'Service' rather than 'Server'? I ask because I just checked update on my Win 11 PC, after seeing this...
  20. I'm inclined to agree; the way to go for very low gears is a very small inner, with a modest spread of sprockets, to give evenly spaced gears. My tourer has a 20T inner, so a very modest 28T on the back gives a really good stump-puller... and it keeps the weight down too!
  21. Very local to me... The drop from Upper Sundon toward Harlington is one of the few safe (ish) 40 mph descents in the area. Further East and over the same ridge is Hexton or Gravel (Grovel) Hill, which is a very regular climb for me, the quickest route in to Hertfordshire. Have been known to tackle it 4 times in a week... it doesn't get any easier
  22. On a holiday in June this year, myself and another participant were passed by the Google camera car... https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.4182533,-3.038277,3a,75y,98.72h,97.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sRg4UtYFfXy6DVI-1BpdZmA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en That was quite a significant climb out of Clun.
