I don’t think you can change CVs on Select, and I have no other means of doing so. Also I found the fault, it’s the decoder. I swapped decoders and fitted the Lenz to my Hall class and it was dead as well. The Hornby decoder from my Hall works fine in the B17. I’ll have it returned and hopefully will get a replacement. Thank you to all who gave their tips.

I've now established that the loco runs fine when powered by a 9V battery, runs for a while then overloads on DC, on DCC when I select the adress it just doesn't move at all, even when turning the knob all the way up. (Unfortunately) Select didn't die, as my Railroad Hall class ran just fine. I'll look at the tender connection and I really hope that the decoder isn't dead. It shouldn't be, it's a Lenz, unless I accidentally killed it.

Thanks for suggestions, I'm an idiot and when I took out the decoder to test if it works on DC I didn't put the blanking plug back in! I guess I'll do some more testing to figure out what is at fault (Select is a bit sus, it's three years old and they have issues).

Update 1: Loco is completely dead on DC and DCC. I have no clue what to do next.

This Christmas I got a B17. It's very nice looking and when it runs it's very smooth and quiet. While running in, things went fine. The controller did cut out three or four times, but it's an old crusty Hornby DC train set controller, so I didn't really care, as it did that when it was brand new. After fitting a Lenz Standard+ V2 decoder and succesfully programming the loco on my Hornby Select, it ran fine for a few laps and then the controller overloaded. Now instead of overloading it cuts off randomly and then comes back into life. I'm not sure if it's because of the loco, the decoder, the controller, or if I tangled a wire or made something short circuit inside the tight GE tender when I fitted the decoder. If anything changes I'll post updates. Please help, I don't want to return Christmas presents.

Just tried running the Class 5 with my Hornby J83, when the Class 5 stopped the J83 continued to run fine, just like all my Hornby locos. Apart from decoder issues I’m starting to think that it might be the fault of Select, it is well known that it isn’t NMRA compliant.

To answer both questions, no, only the Class 5 was running and I switched the DCC controller back on to run the Class 5, I hope this helps clarify it a bit

Recently, I bought the Class 5 from Rails of Sheffield. The loco is alright and ran perfectly fine on DC while running in. After putting in the Bachmann 36-568A 6 pin decoder and giving it a new adress on my Select, everything seemed to be ok. That was until the loco ran for 2-3 minutes, when it slowly came to a complete halt, no overload flashing on the Select nor did the loco start smoking. After I switched of the controller and started running the loco it did the same thing, run fine for a bit and then slow down to a halt. I then forgot about it, and when I ran it today, it did it again. Twice. I already eliminated motor issues, as it ran just fine on DC, so it's either the decoder or the Select. The pins on the decoder are a tad bit long, but I doubt it's causing this problem, the decoder doesn't touch anything else and is plugged in properly. Please help, I live in Continental Europe and it's a pain in the arse to ship things to and from the UK.

The 150 Sprinter is an old Lima model that Hornby are selling in the main range, that model should also be in the Railroad range.

That’s a good contender, I have one in LNER post-war black and it’s a really good model.

Now these are some good models, I don’t own them but judging by the reviews I’d say they must be great.

So what is the best bargain model that Hornby made in your view? I'll add my nominee, the Railroad Hall class.
