About Me

I've been interested in railways all my life - it's inherited - and have collected models from the age of 9 or 10 (several decades ago now).  I grew up in the 1970s on a mixed diet of North American Model Railroader Magazine, Railway Modeller and, a bit later, Continental Modeller, so it's no surprise my main inspiration comes from American layouts (I actually rather like 8' x 4' starter layouts, having grown up with them).  I also like GW Branch Lines and Narrow Gauge Railways, and have always been impressed by European Railways and Model Railways, although my knowledge of this huge subject is limited.

I'm interested in layout design, and have sketched out many, many ideas over the years - including some micro-layout ideas that were published on the late Carl Arendt’s Micro-Layout website.
Without a permanent place for a layout, my modelling has mainly involved making individual card and plastic kits.  I have started some portable layouts, but prior to joining RMweb in 2018 none progressed beyond track pinned to bare baseboards.  I enjoy running trains, and in 2021 switched to Continental / American Narrow Gauge modelling to address my space constraint.  The launch of TT:120 by Peco in 2022 reawakened my interest in standard gauge and UK outline modelling and my current collection covers Continental and US standard gauge HO, narrow gauge and some TT:120.

Some years ago my real passion became my job and my interest in Railway Modelling as a way to relax became more relevant, since when I have gradually become more active as a modeller.
