  1. Hi I affix the first wheel to the axle the day before. 24 hours for a full cure. Then I use a GW Press to affix the second wheel, double checking with a B2B gauge. Never timed myself on the second wheel fitting but guesstimate would be about the 30 second mark. The glue hadn’t ‘taken’ in that time period in my experience (2 sets of wheels). I bought my bottle from a Model Engineering show after a talk with the salesman there who recommended it. But obviously he was used to much bigger scales than ours.
  2. Hi I’ve used it on two sets of Gibson wheels. I smeared it on the bottom of the axle hole so the insertion of the axle pushed the glue forward as it was inserted, the excess being wiped off. So far, over two years, the joints haven’t failed as there is no evidence of the quartering having moved. So I deemed that, for me anyway, a success.
  3. Try Permabond 240. Its a slow cure high viscosity glue. Also think of an ‘accelerator’. Useful for speeding up the curing time once you are happy with the quartering.
  4. As a rooky at this soldering lark the one tip I use is to use “shavings” of solder just laid next to the joint and to then introduce the soldering iron so they melt and flash along the joint. It’s amazing how little solder you need. Previously I’d get the joint hot and then feed in the solder and create a “fillet” of solder thinking more (solder) is better (joint). I got this from the chap who demonstrates resistance soldering at Scalefour North. PS I now swear by my RSU for most but not all soldering jobs.
  5. I used Microscope Slide Slip Glass Covers on the one coach I’ve built. I think from a recommendation on either this thread or another thread on RMWeb. A bit fiddly and a learning experience but good results.
  6. What are the issues? Are they major? Any pointers appreciated.
  7. I have an Alan Gibson E4 in the ‘Round Tuit’ stash. Is that any help?
  8. Another case of I just get one and a manufacturer then announces a RTR one! 🤣
  9. Will they go into production at all? Even as a ‘flat pack’ kit minus castings? I’d be interested.
  10. Sailing Whipping Thread like this? https://oceanrope.com/shop/whipping-twine/
  11. As a pure layman with no knowledge of Bankruptcy or Insolvency I find it surprising that the Insolvency Practitioner only expects to raise £5,000 from stock with a Book price of nearly £100,000. Is this normal?
  12. To paraphrase a comic icon ‘I use all the right notes apostrophes but not necessarily in the right order places’. 😁
  13. I don’t know if this is the right place but does anyone know what happened to the late Iain Rice’s layouts? I do hope they have been preserved and, hopefully, will attend future exhibitions. A fitting memorial if they do I think.
  14. As an outsider may I suggest a Dumb Waiter may assist Mortimore with his domestic duties…. That and the provision of a small silver bell to summon him.
  15. Wasn’t the ‘old’ way to use brake fluid?
  16. Try looking at the price of a second hand Cowells lathe. Eye watering, especially if they have a good range of accessories. A Watchmaker’s Cowells lathe with minimum accessories just sold on eBay for £1800. Starting price for a Cowells ME lathe seems to be £1000 with just a 3 jaw chuck. I continue to dream….
  17. I’m sure CF MRC is a vampire… He always seems to post after midnight. PS Excellent work, as always. The Finescale 2mm workers on here leave me in awe.
  18. Yes. Exactly. But to me it is ‘character’ and has an appeal I can’t find the right words for. Plus it is what I grew up with. Strange that I am drawn to opposites. I like the run down charm of ‘banger blue’ for diesels but my steam era preferences are now for the elegance of Pre-Grouping liveries.
  19. To me ‘banger blue’ I interpret as a shorthand to describe the run down, underfunded, corporate blue railway of the 70s/early 80s. Creaking at the joints with much original infrastructure and practices. The time before Sectorisation and variation in liveries and the introduction of new stock.
  20. Tony. Have you ever photographed Mostyn? I think it is the best of the ‘banger blue’ layouts and every time I have seen it, it has run faultlessly. P4 as well!
  21. No mention of Farringdon? Did I miss it? Normally I’m no lover of GWR Branch Line termini (truly a railway modelling cliché) but this layout is simply sublime.
  22. I thoroughly enjoy Wright Writes. I learn from more knowledgeable modellers than myself, I enjoy the banter and I quite often get inspired to try to raise my modelling game. However as soon as the subject of Thompson comes up I start to skip entire ‘chunks’ of the thread as it tends to be pedantic, argumentative and quite often unpleasant. And, not to put too fine a point on it, the same protagonists. PS I note one of the contributors now has Guest on his name. Is he no longer a member of this Forum? PPS As an aside my main hobby is sailing. If you ever are amongst a group of sailors and want some fun just say “I think Rocna anchors are useless” and wait for the reactions! Hours of fun to be had. It would make a discussion about Thompson look like a maiden Aunt’s tea party in comparison. 🤣
  23. That’s a shame as I’d like to see it in the flesh one day. Maybe the reinstated buildings could be in an LNER constituent Company style this time….. PS If they ever decide to move it on I’d be interested.
