As for some of the 'super' weathering above, I think it's time to start visiting car boot sales for models and getting the air brush out!

That said, I am now slightly tempted to get myself an autocoach (cheaper than that, mind!) and do it in blue/grey working with a 14! ... One day I'll stop these 'imaginative' mini-projects and actually build a layout...

I know autocoaches have been steadily increasing in value recently, but I didn't know it'd reached this level! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIRFIX-No-54256-8-G-W-R-DIDCOT-AUTO-COACH-CODE-3-/260726230825?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item3cb47e8f29#ht_961wt_907 Did any autocoaches ever receive full yellow ends? ... He asked in a moment of naive optimism...

The fact that it IS still possible to pick up a bargain on eBay (I've recently picked up a near mint Bachmann 4MTT for £37, a Bachmann Mk1 SK which needed 2 minutes' worth of work for £8.50, and a mint Hornby 08 for £41, amongst others) makes these all the more worrying! We've all paid over the odds once in a while in the excitement of wanting something quickly, but it appears patience really is the key!

    Nice of him to clarify!
  7. The bus on the bridge makes it look a bit like a model layout!
  8. I do like the weathering on that duff! In fact, it's so realistic, I've added it to my reference photos

Those are the ones in the photo... Not sure on exact dimensions but I'd guess something around 8'-9' from the ground (note the fireman in the photo sitting down, no standing room on the footplate!), the Hornby model is MASSIVE in comparison!

The size of the prototype http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3915317983_bbded26e87.jpg (Yes, that's a standard brake van on the far left, to give an idea of scale!)... Maybe Hornby forgot to carry a 1 somewhere when doing the measurements?

Last week was a free listing weekend on eBay, so I'd wager there are some daft 'buy it now' prices on there at the moment from those taking a chance!

Could it be that, being a recognised seller, people see it as a compromise between paying extra to buy from a shop, and getting a 'bargain' on ebay? Well ok, that doesn't explain some of the daft prices, but it would explain why you could expect their stuff to sell for £5-£10 more than other ebay listings? I know I'd have more faith buying from them than someone with a feedback rating of 3 and a barely understandable grasp of English!

"would be found on any line at nearly any time in the modelled steam era. Whatever your layout, this hard-working loco will fit right in". I hope the owners of all those ECML based layouts are watching the auction closely!
  17. I love that one, atmosphere like no other! Nice 70s effect (or I like to think so) gained using cheap film (in date but I saw it for £1 per roll and knew it'd be "interesting" to say the least!). Mid 70s open day at the local colliery? And you can't beat a bit of dereliction for an 'arty' shot! (Sorry about the image sizes, not sure how to resize them on here?).

It's when he gets to the post office and they ask if it's worth more than £40... "Well.... Probably not, but it is to someone out there..."
  19. LNER pacifics do nothing for me, but that has atmosphere by the bucket load!

Likewise Bachmann 08s... I've seen bodies go for up to £25 in good nick, and recently sold a chassis for the same price, yet there are complete boxed locos going for as little as £35! I might have to invest ;-).
