  1. Hi Bill, I read though this thread a few days back, I do recall Pacific231G listed some kits somewhere in it. Whether they are relevant i don't know. Paul
  2. Thanks for the information David, I think, when all is said and done, I am confined by the track spacing i have, 60mm (15'). So eventually when i do build the crane, assuming 17.5ft, I may have to scale it to fit. Paul
  3. Thanks for that, I have a long way to go as yet. Are you still local? I lived in Warsash until 1970, lived in Essex since.
  4. My diorama is based loosely on this view.
  5. OK, I think your measurement is better than mine, so I'go with yours. I was measuring the wrong lines. Although it doesn't make any difference Ocean Terminal was on the White Star wharf, was just up from the QE2 wharf. Thank you for the input, much appreciated. Paul.
  6. So would I !!!! I started off at a good pace, but got bogged down with making turnout switches and the MERG control system. It is my first ever layout, so a big leaning curve. Paul.
  7. Using the google measure, I get 3.8m approx, 12.5ft. Correlating with the nearby permanent way suggest it's fairly accurate..ish. I did measure the old crane tracks at Surrey docks last month, using the iPhone measuring app, they were more like 13ft. Paul
  8. Excellent photos, thanks for posting. Paul
  9. On my version of Google the ruler is accessed with a right click on the mouse. Great little tool.
  10. Ah right, that explains it. Thanks Paul.
  11. Excellent, I didn't know there was a measuring tool, Cheers.
  12. Just odd that 99% don't work, shame..
  13. Hi all, just spent an hour or so going though the thread, I didn’t realise I was so interested in dockside cranes! Some great pictures. Unfortunately, the links to the photos didn’t work for me, my laptop is probably to blame. I’m just in the process of laying down the track for a dockside diorama based on Southampton Ocean Terminal. Although I’m a long way from building a Stothert and Pitt crane, what would be useful now though is the gauge of the S&P track. From some grainy images I have I can estimate the dimensions, be nice to know what they really are without a trip down to Southampton. Regards Paul
  14. Hi Jam, I’ve move to this thread to answer your previous message. No need to apologize for the length of the reply, I am pleased you made such an effort. I really appreciate the words. Took a look at the link you sent, love the 3D images, very cool. 2D AutoCAD and Anyrail is my limit !! Back in March 2020 my initial plan was just a diorama based on Bursledon Station, formulated during the first lockdown, I even scratch built the signal box from a period B&W photo. Summer was taken up working on the bungalow I’ve just moved into, but with Lockdown II, I turned my thoughts back to the diorama. By then I had realised that I needed more interest than just a station, So I developed the plan to incorporate a bit of Southampton docks, but to that end I would need to use the loft space. Being that the loft would need extensive insulation work first, I figured I could build the dock scene as a module in the warm spare room while insulation work was put in place. Unfortunately, even given the space, I just couldn’t make it work nicely. I did consider N gauge right at the outset, back in March 2020 and planned to go to the Alley Pally exhibition to see N scale in the flesh then make up my mind. That of course was cancelled and now appears not much hope of getting to a local shop let alone any shows being put on, not for a long while either. So, last week I went out on a limb and ordered some FiNetrax track from British Finescale to be getting on with. Will a diorama work in N scale? At least with the change in scale I can achieve that view across the Hamble that I like. Also, with the modular approach I can just concentrate on one bite size bit for now. Don’t get me wrong though, it won’t be a grandiose layout in the loft, simply an end to end with a loop each end, Bursledon station, and branch off to the dock terminal and goods yard. Difficulty now is making the dock scene into a stand-alone diorama, just in case. Also finding suitable rolling stock in N scale. 'USA' class is a must for the dock. So, at the moment, I’m fighting with my conscience, is a trip to the timber yard considered a necessity in these times…… Meantime, I’ve just received two books for reference, Ian Drummonds books on railways around Southampton and the docks. So, a bit of light reading. Anyway, I won’t keep you from the paying work, Keep Safe Paul
  15. Hi All, I new to the RMWeb, so still sifting though the myriad of posts, Just stumbled onto this thread, searching for USA class loco. I must say that this thread holds lots of interest for several reasons. Reading through Jam’s planning process is really helpful as I am trying to plan my first ever layout, and finding it really hard. So, bearing in mind Jam has 100% more experience than myself, I feel a bit better about my struggle. Also, the mention of Warsash, my village from ’59-’71, then moved to Essex. My first railway memory was my father and I looking across the Hamble, seeing the steam trains winding along the riverside and crossing the bridges at Bursledon. (something I want to incorporate) My Dad made his living working on the river, he always had boats, I can recall family trips over to Calshot or up to Bucklers Hard. So, I’ll be intrigued to see how the layout progresses Jam. How’s it going? Paul.
  16. Just looking at Nine Elms on an an old map, wow it was a massive complex back in the day... Cheers bécasse.
  17. Thanks for the replies, really appreciate the information. So I guess on a run to Waterloo the the loco would use the turntable there, then once back at Southampton return to Eastleigh for service. I will order the Ian Drummond book i think.....
  18. Hi all and Merry Christmas . Just trying to work a part of the dock system into a track plan and i was wondering how the locos were turned round at the Ocean Terminal in the 1950's. Paul
  19. Morning Phil, What an excellent photo, that is going to be really helpful. thank you for the link to your fathers album. Regards Paul
  20. Hi, Thank you for the replies, very much appreciated, good to have some pointers. The sound of the Thumper as you call them i recall more than the steam locos. the sound reverberated across the river. I probably won't go as modern as that tho. I've had a quick look at the T9, looks good. Also it will make compressing the diorama a bit easier with a smaller rake of coaches. Cheers Paul
  21. Thanks info, Ian and Paul, I'll look up the Maunsell Mogul. I have already bought a Bachmann 4MT 2-6-0 as in the lower picture. bit easier to identify from the number. I'd like a smaller, say 0-6-0 loco with some goods vans to add a bit on variety. Paul
  22. Cheers great site, the map is fantastic. I've a few photos, like this one for instance, )I would need someone to identify the loco). I also have pictures of some bigger locos on the bridges and station, ie West Country Battle of Britain. but none of the smaller loco with local freight. Paul.
  23. Hi all, New to RMweb, I’m not a rail buff, but just always had a love of the steam loco era. Being bought up on the Hamble River, I remember watching the trains run along the river through Burseldon. Retired and locked down now, I would like to build a diorama based on that line. I'd like to base it about the time my parents moved there late 30’s to the late 50’s. So, I’m in need some information what rolling stock would have been on that line around then. Can anyone point me towards some reference material to help me please.
