  1. Hi and happy new year to all.......... so what type of printer and how adept might you be at modding an stl. The question has been kicked around a fair bit, and as someone that designs and prints OO models its a very wide subject. Look for Iron Minks excellent models on thingiverse, designed for resin but ive modified some for filament myself. Now having bought a resin setup im seeing how those he releases for free work for me. Im still part doing brakes and other details in filament as I find it works better for me. Perhaps the fine and to scale detail is too delicate for me, but thats what I find. Thats the problem 1 persons version that is designed and set for their making is fine fine for them, but dosent quite work sliced and printed elsewhere. Theres plenty of prints around but most I see need playing with in some form or other. Also the question re selling stl files seems filled with variables. How is your type of printer setup, can you print a high detail part of your own design which should show it can translate to an imported stl. Some sell but have never printed except through 3rd party printers so have never run a model around their layout for hours to confirm all is well. Screenshot shows my work up for brakes for the Plate and Trestle wagons from the same source, again it works for me with the body in resin, so a different way but works for me. I lose too many small details no matter how I try to handle and snip off suports. just my 2 cents worth.......
  2. Ive found some parts at 1:76 are too thin for my printer's (filament) I have done my own chassis on a few to be a little more robust. Cutting the model just below the body base allow's the chassis to then attach to that. Very well designed models but until my resin printer arrives later this week i'm unable to try a full print to see how that goes. Amanda bygone-wagons.com
  3. I started designing and printing rolling stock that wasn't available ready to roll, that was the challenge in many way's. 4 odd year's on and I have a range that while a few have now appeared retail most probably wouldn't be considered. As a residential designer im comfortable in CAD, 2D and 3D and believe it or not use it to relax from the day job. Though semi retired Im still asked for consultancy work which keep's me in the loop with the updated Cad programs. Im seeing far more people tackling their 1st model using the many type's of programmes available, commendable efforts too, how many hours does it take from first line to a finished print, many more than would ever make 1 person a living unless expanding, for me as long as it fund's my hobby Im happy to while away the hours on what I do. Suggestion to a first time enthusiast, keep it simple and just build on from there. The debate over selling stl files rolls on, how we draw, how we setup for our particular printer has many variation's. I have run every design around the layout for hours to ensure they run, handy when there is less than perfect track in some places too. My 3 fdm printers run hot some days and dont run at all for days too, I succumbed to the gooey side last week and have my first resin printer coming, that's going to reset me at a novice level for a while I think, every day's a school day. 4. Love how they slug us Aussies 40 quid for postage.......
  5. Ive watched the discussions re selling or giving access to an stl of the item we have in many cases spent many hours creating, Ive spent 4 years getting to the point where I can achieve a reasonably good wagon using my 3 bedslingers, using filament. Ive downloaded and printed/ modified some of Iron Mink's excellent models too. I checked and was told no problems to sell a couple on which I have done. They are drawn full size and then re-scaled to suit, being meant for a resin printer I have had to get creative to print on my setup's here. Being a building designer with many Cad years behind me I find this tricky at times but not beyond me. The thought of having someone try to print 1 of my stl's without much more than a "slice n go approach" is kind of unrealistic. I draw how I do in my Cad of choice, all as acis solids using solid modelling, that gives a certain freedom but also restrictions im used to working around. Ive designed and printed every model, run them on my layout, and wouldn't dream of letting an untried or run tested model loose, especially in just stl format. While I can design and document a house in my day job, and know how it will go together and work, I would'nt expect someone who bought a 3d printer to just be able to slice n go. The 3 printers here all print slightly different, even for the same stl, im always tweaking and don't think that will change any time soon. Case in point I was asked to re-do my tank ramp wagon with it set for loading tanks, buffers folded back and with the 1 end removed. Easy as its my cad and I know what to do, 10 hours to date in between coffee and watching youtube so far. To send the stl's to someone they would need to do a few test prints then wonder why I drew how I did when their printer will go finer than mine, or is resin which is a whole different ball game. The concept of a "thingiverse" type repository for paid or free files more in our interest sounds good, the 1 we all go to has many good files, a lot of crap and ive whiled many an hour trying to get something to print or even just slice. I think were a bit far off that yet, Just my thought's going forward........
  6. My approach on a 3d printed Insixfish with approx the same wheel spacings, all 3 axles move sideways enough to go through med radius points etc. Planning to do similar to an early Siphon when time permits. I have a video of them running on youtube.
  7. Always good to re-furbish, look into an all metal throat to eliminate the ptfe going to the nozzle. Added it to my cr6se and cr10s and makes a big difference, nozzle changes as well are much quicker.
  8. Following on from this topic I have now got some EM gauge wheels here and can confirm these wagons will work with those. I bought a set from Wizard models so am using them to go through all the wagons I make and adjusting where needed.
  9. Hi...Looks like a great and thought out kit. I prefer the gel type super glue as it has a little more forgiving time. https://www.gluesaustralia.com.au/tarzans-grip-shockproof-super-glue-high-temperatur In your neck of the woods something similar that dosent bond instantly would be available. regards.....
  10. Pic found online which shows an aircraft being moved somewhere, possibly a late mk spitfire by the look. Currently trying to model for my wagon load. 1 butchered airfix kit strewn about the workbench currently!!.
  11. Ive 3d modeled a ramp wagon recently. To go with the other tank carrying wagons I do. The 1 wheelset isnt removable though. Google bygone wagons for more.....
  12. My copy of A Pictorial record of great westeren wagons has a loose a4 sheet in the back with a list of corrections on it. no saying who didit but ill scan it for you if its useful. Example.....Fig 143 no 42020 was a crocodile M not as stated. Is this what you are after.
  13. I downloaded and printed the waiting room on my Cr10s filament printer as an exercise, then drew up a roof to see what it looks like. Pitched at 30 degrees and printed at .1mm layer height. Ill upload the stl later if anyone wants it, if you want a different pitch or an eave overhang just ask and ill add it. Heres a couple images for comment. I sliced the building to print flat on the bed, roof is just flat as you see printed whole. No eaves on it and just noodled up a ridge cap by eye. I draw in Autocad. STL Added......... TEST ROOF.stl
  14. Trouble with photos like those is I see more detail to try to incorporate into a model. Were lucky it exists at all really, great reference thanks......
  15. Hi.....Ive made some progress, strangely my day work has gone off the scale down here. I expected covid to kill the building industry I draft for, our gov put in place a new home stimulus package to counter that and its gone crazy. I have setup a website though so I can get away from Ebay too which has helped. www.bygone-wagons.com The tanks are done though im leaving some work to be done on them as I think it is easier for follow on painting etc. Love to get some etched ladders but thats ongoing. Happy for comments and also have tidied up some Rectanks I had started too.
  16. Im getting closer with mine, Had a tracking issue with the longer 3 axle wagon but thats fine now. Just trying to sort the ladder and walkway out atm. Ideal for an etch but thats beyond me. Anyone interested in doing some etches for me, either UK or elsewhere.
  17. Hi....The oval tank was 1 of a bunch of sort of freelance/based on some prototype I did as an exercise. If anyone wants more just ask....................Amanda.....
  18. Heres a test tank for anyone to try out. Drawn in Autocad using solid modelling. It could be refined more but ive been distracted by other things....... The stl is ready to slice. I print on a Cr10s using the cheps profile I posted a link to earlier in Cura 4.6.1. Print layer at .1mm, infill say 10%, no support as it realy dosent need it. Mind you ive not printed this for 6 months so it should print cleaner than the pictured example on that profile. Or if you have a well sorted print profile show us what you can do. Try it modify it bend it bust it, its quite a simple model. Amanda.... TEST TANK.stl TEST_TANK.dwg
  19. Free trade deal..........that would be a great idea.......googled and read the web page on it.......most went over my head. Think the best I can currently do is mark on the ridiculously large label aus pot has as a "gift" with a value low enough so you guys dont get too stung........... A
  20. Hi.....Theres a lot of ideas and ways to do this, the discussion re selling stl files for peeps to print at home comes to mind. I see 3 people with 3 different printers would produce 3 different results unless some standard speci was followed. Material, layer thickness and print speed etc. I had not thought I would sell any when I started 18 months ago outside of Oz. Its primarily for my enjoyment then it evolved into paying for the hobby side, printer and consumables etc. The spare $ are just for the layout, currently frozen in a kind of time warp needing some tlc, though im able to run wagons around to show they do work. I am pleased someone finds my efforts of a standard they are happy to pay a price for, but my output is fitted in between my day job. The ro tanks ive had ticking over since before xmas, no idea the hours ive spent drawing, and at my professional rate they would be unaffordable. I have 15 small tanks and 3 of the 3 axle tanks on the bench currently, with 3 each of the short and long base wagons to go with them. Someone wants some of My Aeros so im printing a few pieces im short there, plus I need a few more gas tank wagons so their in the queue as well. Thankfully I play the long game with this taking the pleasure from the result. Im currently snowed with building drawing too here, our gov as part of its covid recovery has initiated a $25,000 grant to new home builders here. The 2 builders I draw for have been swamped with people who now find they are within reach of building a house. Just not enough hours in the day sometimes............. Amanda......north coast Tasmania.........cold and orrible currently..............
  21. Hi....Getting further along but my day job keeps getting in the way. Im finding more and more how to combine parts I was printing seperately. The printer as well is ever improving, Cr10s using Cura 4.6.1 currently. Setings seem to be the biggest variable, currently using Cheps profile in Cura and ive noticed a good improvement over the settings I was using before. https://www.chepclub.com/cura-profiles.html No matter the printer they are at the mercy of the variables you use to slice the file. I cant go past these now ive seen the improvement they make, watch his utube vids to see his approach. While I do sell wagons on Ebay im happy to ditch them and the near 20% they want, happy to answer any questions and I value suggestions. Amanda....
  22. Hi GWR...........Ive been dithering around with these for some months on and off as you remember. The lull in work did give me some spare time to get on with them somewhat, now work is flat out again but im persevering. The detail in filament 3d is coarser than resin prints so im trying to get the balance right, maybe trying too hard. Ill certainly have them done in a week or so, playing with the 3 axle tank at the moment, detail is scant witht the fotos of the decrepit example in the rail museum the main source of detail. Its meant to be a relaxing hobby, somedays theres not enough hours available, especially when I need 1 more test print at midnight!!!! Amanda......
  23. In between drawing work for a living, and hobby drawing ive got these primed and running. Ended up doing my own chassis as using a Dapol rtr was quick but impractical realy. £10 from Hattons and take the fixed tank off just makes a pile of spare tanks. Also doing the longer wheelbase wagon for a 3 axle tanker too. I dont claim they have etched wagon finnesse, but for a 3d print im getting quite good results. Amanda......
  24. Hi Ken......I will be at some point, been distracted by residential drafting and other wagons im doing. I know you were interested before and ive not forgotten. The covid carry on has made for a strange few months, some days I just put the feet up and watch a good doco on the box.
