  1. wow 5 months since i last posted anything, mind you it's been winter anyway Cambrian "dancehall" straight from the kit ,one side unfitted grey the other drab olive then a diagram 1760 brake van .started life as the Hornby thing (really just the roof /one end and the chassis kept ) the sides where made from slaters 20*79 thou strip with the edges scraped back although the grooves look a bit to big (real ones wound be 1/4 inch if that )hoping a couple of layers of paint reduce the grooves a bit . the next project is a diagram 1748 shark (the other SR ones with the ploughs in the middle) again using the Hornby van and the same 20*79 method may try less or no scraping or find some really good plank sheeting at york show . finally the 17t fly ash wagon still awaits transfers /weathering and final finishing
  2. many thanks for your comments you'll have to do the early ones 9*** numbers V tanks. but there's still plenty of variation =advert boards /frame only "big logo"etc /full tops data panels or some just had a large number only. on my "ever growing list" is the French built ones with really rounded ends that must have been another test as they where soon moved to another traffic (ici i think)(pic in david larkins book )
  3. got these off ebay hope they are of use to someone they did last well into BR days free for personnel use otherwise just ask me (probably say yes) anyway also done as pdf but to big for upload. pm me for pdf
  4. MY 2 pence worth is .I was never a mega customer of Hatton's but preferred them to other "shops" .they had better second hand deals in my opinion, excellent delivery service .I did order the odd "big list" (got a load of oxford road vehicle's) never had any problems !! will miss them and wish all at Hatton's good luck in the future (maybe a web only store??) thanks for good service (in this age it's becoming rare)
  5. Good evening, everyone. This evening, with thanks to Philip Wheldale, John Turner, The KDH archive, and knoxrj, all on Flickr, we have four more photo’s to enjoy. The first one is a view of WD "Austerity" 2-8-0, 90450, as it heads towards Salt End with a train of Esso tank wagons, in c1967. anyone know what the "DEEP" code on the wagon refers too ,not seen it before ?
  6. I too just use a "bathroom" type fan, but i put a piece of speaker foam between it and the box .I suppose anything wound ie old t-shirt etc
  7. firstly wound like to thank Mick Nicholson for the talk I really enjoyed it plus got to meet a few "old faces"(Steve j) interesting comment about walliker st /selby st possible level crossing??. always thought a proper road to a footbridge a bit strange ?(maybe one of the many what if plans) secondly there's a picture in hull daily mail's images of hull (orange cover) page 28 of children on a live track snowballing as a train goes by with the gate wide open !!!!(health and safety) I did manage to find the owner of said photo (on hull daily mail yahoo group many years ago) and he told me it was of haltemprice st crossing plus there's a two part article in backtrack mag (first part march 2003 vol 17 no.3) about hull's level crossings
  8. re wheels on ew60065 thread recently posted Evemodel ones on ebay - they come from China and work out about £1 per axle if you want to save money. They're very nice quality. any use??
  9. P4 bodger  silly shunt!

  10. re mesh just done a quick update on my thread (with pic's) hope they help Heavymetalwagons workbench - Modifying & Detailing RTR stock - RMweb
  11. A while ago after a lot of searching the web i managed to find some good "scale" mesh and checker plate the mesh is from EMA (the plastic weld company) i got EMS44100 called expanded metal sheet 1.0mm holes made of aluminum and really easy to cut (knife or scissors) but the holes are really fine can just get a 0.3 drill bit through (may try there 1.5mm next time) .will have to be REALLY careful when painting as i can see me clogging it up!!! also got some checker plate made by JTT architectural 97455(ps-1055) tread plate N-scale from buffers .its a lot finer than the slaters stuff and looks nearer to scale to me. finally again from EMA some expanded corrugated sheet 1mm ECS1 which looks like the decking on comtic/autic and air braked steel and coil wagons .its slightly ribbed and could be used as either mesh (on its own) or on top of a floor .the last two photo's the usual caveat applies (unless EMA wants to send me "free stuff")!!! hope the photos help
  12. sorry its been 10 months since last post (i have been doing stuff honest) finished the last of my PCA/PCB's two Hornby class 31's one a "rot" rebuild using a lima chassis and p4 wheels (not the nice easy alan gibson kits) but exactoscale wheels and brass tubing to get it all to work plus loctite one also had a respray into blue. d5509 which Hornby got wrong anyway A Bachmann 08 got cheap as a p4 non-runner and repaint A dozen Bachmann/airfix presflo (still in the paint shop)plus not looking forward to doing all the lettering A 17ton fly ash presflo conversion (as they ran with cement traffic in the 70's) fly ash is used to make cheaper concrete
  13. re mesh .I think i got this one Fine Expanded Aluminium Sheet (ema-models.co.uk) 1mm spacing a bit further down the page !stock code ems44100 personally i may try the 1.5 mesh next time as the holes are very tiny (less than a mill) and too easy to clog .I just one very light pass to stray prime ,but could easily clog up on the latter painting !!! I also got some metal Corrugated Sheet looks right for decking on comtic and some of the later steel bogie wagons ? was wrong earlier the checker plate I got was by JTT 97455 (ps-1055) tread plate N-scale from buffers but still miles better than slaters
  14. re mesh i got some from EMA (the glue company)as I'm attempting to build a cartic 4 set!!! it's not cheap but its aluminum and cuts really nicely .they do several types if you want more info let me know ?
  15. this is how far i got 15 years ago strange thing is it got moved from "my may get round to doing box" onto my must get round to doing box/shelf "even before Justin's update
  16. ford cartic =quite a rare beast indeed i only have one picture from a model railway constructor article 60's/70's by "deltic" 2"x1" and b&w but to me the decks and the inner sides look light grey
  17. sorry ben wound this discussion be better in prototype matters?? rather than over filling this thread ?? like I say I never questioned mat cartic's been anything other than blue then I started reserching lol?.( the late 80's bright blue)and your right they defiantly got painted that colour in the mid 80's and i've just searched "PJA wagon" on flickr and there's a good photo by Huw Millington 1986 of a cartic showing the bright blue paint and the deck that colour too. I wasn't implying you got things wrong (because you haven't) clearly but to suggest there could be more liveries variations?? when wagon "experts" like david larkin and roger silsbury quote body colour as "grey" it starts you thinking well maybe two more questions I now have are !!!lol 1 is what i'm calling "grey" body colour more of a different shade of blue ie a lot more "grey" in it (you must admit some wagons look different) among the MAT fleet 2 "maybe the rootes pressings (the first built batch) where painted differently to the Standard Wagon and BREL Ashford Works ones ?? I was hoping someone who around in the 60's/70's wound have answered this question SORRY BEN if I'm doing your head in a bit (i've gone into that nerdy research mode !!)
  18. thanks ben the photo I linked was dated 1977 and david larkins ref date was 1969ish and the one you mention is 1988 and its either had a wash! or a repaint? I always thought mat= blue but???maybe pre 70's ?? https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/matcartic4/e5ca1ac8c although very dirty the mat sign is "mat blue" but even above the bogie where the dirt been removed it doesn't look blue ? I think the fleet must have had a repaint (into blue)in the early 80's
  19. hi ben I started scratch building a mat set just before you (have ordered 2 mat sets from you)away but my research for the 1970's MAT sets suggests grey body and light grey interior from paul's website although its hard to tell under the grime on the body ! but also david larkin states in his private owner wagons book (the blue bradford barton one) bodywork grey see https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/matcartic4/e5ca25fa4 I could well be wrong and wound like to know if i am !
  20. damn going to have to spend some money .started doing a lima bogie vee tank about 15 years ago (and put to one side)=give up !!!! going to have to finish it now thanks
