  1. In this case I understand that it is the responsibility of the seller to be registered for UK VAT and pay the VAT directly to HMRC. i.e. you should already have paid the VAT to the seller.
  2. Hanging on to a minute anything is tricky with my large clumsy hands.
  3. Unless it's going to the Netherlands in which case standard transit time is 3-5 weeks. It's not Royal Mail's fault but is down to the incompetence of their partner PostNL. I wonder if Royal Mail is aware of the unbelievably poor performance of their business partner.
  4. Nail on the head. If you're designing something, and it doesn't really matter what, you need to be aware of the processes involved in the manufacture and their design rules.
  5. If the LEDs are connected in series you will need more than 3V for them to light up. As 5BarVT says, I think we need more information. What documentation was included? Maybe a specification of schematic? David
  6. I think Jessica's cube would look better with a bit of weathering
  7. An interesting bit of Plessey history I was not aware of. I started my career in 1983 at Plessey Research which was moved to Caswell from Ilford in 1940 to avoid the bombing.
  8. If they claim it is OK for DC then it will not be an electrolytic capacitor that can explode if you put the wrong polarity voltage across it for any length of time. Just to be sure look to see if there are any polarity markings on the capacitor. The only other thing to check is the voltage rating is higher than say 20V to give you enough margin.
  9. I'm gobsmacked to see that more than 40% of respondents own 50+ locomotives. I'm not sure though that this statistic is going to be useful when my wife asks me what was in the parcel that just arrived. What I am sure about is that I have a long way to go to catch up.
  10. Bagnall's Models on Salter Street, Stafford. I spent many Saturdays browsing/buying upstairs amongst the model rail stuff in the 70's and bought umpteen Airfix/Revell kits. I'm not sure when they ceased trading. I've often wondered if there was some sort of connection with W G Bagnall in Stafford where my grandfather worked for 52 years.
  11. Love one. What have you got?
  12. As a saxophonist I won't be loosing any sleep about that 😉
  13. It's going to be a challenge to get a complete big band on that band stand. I look forward to seeing it
  14. Hello Gordon A, I was wondering how you were getting along with the Bagnall kit. Hopefully you're making progress because I'm still interested. Regards, David
  15. There are quite a few BR52s in preservation. At the heritage line where I am a volunteer we are reaching completion of restoration. In the summer of next year we expect to have it pulling passengers on the ZLSM here in the Netherlands.
  16. .....and keeping the tip of the iron clean is important too. Tinning the two components to be soldered first also helps.
  17. More likely, a low flying squadron leader.
  18. I have made fairly recent purchases from Kernow and The Model Centre whereby UK VAT was deducted before shipment. Dutch BTW was then charged by the courier. I don't know if this means that they are registered for VAT in the EU. To me it doesn't really matter so I was wondering, what is your concern? I'm fairly sure Hornby are registered in the EU if you want to buy directly from them.
  19. I'm obviously out of touch. I'd be interested to know what the margins are on these small plastic mouldings.
  20. 430 quid!! I think somebody is taking the mickey
  21. I think the Lancaster was powered by 4 Rolls Royce Merlin engines
  22. After a number of years umming and ahing about volunteering at the local museum railway (ZLSM in the Netherlands Deep South), last October I took the plunge. My ambition is to drive steam and am well aware that that is a plan that can easily take five or more years. The kids are older and I hope to retire in roughly 4 years. My time is spent in the shed helping to restore a German “Kriegslok” and so far have been getting the filthiest of jobs and loving every minute. I don’t know whether I’ll achieve my ambition. If not there are plenty of other jobs to keep me off the street during retirement. The only downside is that I have less time for modelling. David
