Hi, I've come across a APT NDM testing formation whilst looking for unique formations to model, and I was wondering whether anyone would have any idea on whether it'd be possible to modify one of the new Hornby NDMs so that it wasn't providing any driving power to the track so that the locomotive pulling the formation was the one in charge, but retain the ability to run freely. My guess would be to remove a gear from the bogies, remove the gear from the wheelset, or the worm gear shown in the attached service sheet but there might be a simpler way to achieve this goal that I'm not aware of. Robin, thanks for this, I’ll have a look at the wheels that the manufacturers you mentioned have to offer as I think this might be the simplest solution without having to replace the chassis. Thanks also for the tip on how to resolve the stiff wheels, as if Hornby offers them the wheels from some of their 7-plank wagons, these would go well with the Beatties wagons that are having the wheels replaced.

Hi, I have a couple of un-boxed Hornby 7-plank wagons from when they were made in Britain that currently have the black plastic wheel sets and I was wondering whether anyone knew of any wagons for which metal wheel sets could be scavenged from that would run freely as the closest I have got are the wheel sets from the Bachmann 7-plank wagons, although they don’t run 100% freely. the other alternative was to find a similar sized chassis to put the wagon moulding onto, however nowadays I think most plank wagons are just one mould and the top portion can’t be removed separately, if I’m wrong please correct me. thanks very much.

Having already asked about suitable rolling stock, I was wondering whether the Hatton’s Genesis in LNWR livery would be a good alternative. If so, could someone recommend a suitable formation? Or shall I wait and see if they do the proposed CR livery as part of the 3rd batch they are thinking of doing

I received my excellent As Build variant yesterday. Does anyone know of some suitable ready to run rolling stock? I know of the Hornby R2160 'The Caledonian' train pack from 2008 but it looks difficult to just buy the coaches. Thanks.

Hi, I have been looking at some locomotive/rolling stock storage boxes with foam slots and before I purchased some I was wondering whether some one knew where I could purchase similar plastics wrapping that Bachmann locomotive ice cube packaging has glued in as that I can prevent any potential scratching/reaction to the foam or the plastic that comes in the Ellis Railworks locomotive boxes. If anyone is looking for formations Mordern Locomotives Illustrated Issue 249 has a brilliant article about nuclear rail traffic and has some brilliant images of KUA train formations from the last ten years, tempted to try the formation on pages 42-43 if a Bachmann Class 57 can haul both of these excellent wagons. Hi, I’ve have recently become aware of a oo scale locomotive of mine that is in dire need of a bit of servicing and I was wondering whether there were any recommendations for a grease that I can use to make sure all the gears and worm drives are lubricated. Any suggestions are appreciated as I have been looking at the Woodland Scenics Hob-E-Lube Moly Grease but I’m not sure whether this would be a good option so feedback would be welcome people have used this. Thanks very much for the suggestions so far, they have really helped. Most of the tools I have enquired about will be for servicing/modifying locomotives, laying track and electrical work purposes predominantly however it is always worth knowing what is needed if I were to branch out into kit building. Hi, Having only just started the modelling aspects of this hobby, having been a collector for many years, I was looking for some recommendations for what tools that I should be possibly purchasing. The here tools that I have having the most problems in working out what to get due to the high variety: A decent soldering iron that doesn’t take up to much space and stand that if possible can hold additional things like brass wool A high quality set of precision screwdrivers (preferably magnetic) mainly for locomotive repair/servicing A high quality set of set of files suitable for detailed work A multimeter Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your suggestions. In the end I put a ViTrains chassis in the Class 37 & and the chassis from one of the Hornby Railroad Class 47 for my Res Publica locomotive. For anyone else looking to do this for the Class 47, it is worth noting that the main glazing units also need to be switched out as Hornby has made adjustments to theirs to fit the bracket that the motor clips into.
