  1. Most historical figures have some merit as well as any more famous demerits. As my German teacher, Dr Wolff - a Pole who also did work for the BBC Overseas Service - pointed out, even Hitler and the Nazis did one good thing - abolishing the Fraktur script that had been universal in Germany for centuries, while other European nations had long gone to a more 'modern' script.
  2. For those who know a bit about guns, or revere naval capabilities, one to weep over. https://petapixel.com/2024/04/17/us-navy-mocked-for-photo-of-commander-shooting-rifle-with-scope-backwards/
  3. Railway folk typically referred to such facilities as "pickling plants".
  4. The aerial pic at 06.35 yesterday shows he may have missed a bit.
  5. I regard disguised white-goods in a kitchen to be analogous to putting the lid down on the loo. Pointless.
  6. Bluesette - Toots Thielemans (He has described this tune as his "Pension Plan'!)
  7. ISTR the Tunnel-Motor version cost an extra 20k dollars in those days.
  8. Climbing roses might be good. P.S. Now in Somerset where it is cloudier!
  9. Closer To The Source - Leroy Hutson
  10. We are told that window and picture glass must not be recycled, but must go in residual waste. That rather supports the idea that it is a composition quite different from bottle glass. I am on a quickie trip to London to buy Eurostar tickets for my next few trips. The 05.05 Penzance is making good progress, and I have a coffee, inspecting sunny Devon.
  11. Excellent back-story! Your use of the Juniper name (again) reminds me of this place, which I used to overlook from Juniper Top, on the north side of Box Hill. https://www.field-studies-council.org/locations/juniperhall/ However, I am not confident that a tip would be welcomed here!
  12. A classic example of the value of a forum! Your knowledge of the trucking business means you look for details many of us might not.
  13. Indeed. ISTR reading that other TOCs are shedding alternative-route knowledge in a bid to cut costs - at Marsham Street's direction, no doubt. Covid really ruined the privatised railway model.
  14. Thankyou, Bill. People like you save lives. End of message! Anyway, Good Morning from 1V48, 06.40 Newcastle to Plymouth. After a weekend in Crewe, including a marvellous evening at the Theatre Royal, Hanley, watching Sherry's granddaughter and many other youngsters dancing with English Youth Ballet's version of Sleeping Beauty, we are on our way home to Torquay. Sadly a tree has fallen on the line south of Cheltenham, so we are currently looking at the Severn Bridge! The Tunnel is our way back to England, I believe. Three cheers for the XC driver having route knowledge!
  15. Speaking as you have found about a decoder is actually far more useful in this sort of thread than blanket recommendations only ever to buy Brand X.
  16. No doubt the snapper will be interested in - and helped by - your detailed knowledge of what is on the layout and where. So you direct the angles - and include some close-ups of the little cameos you have no doubt included. He/she will make suggestions, too, but that is when you look to see if it will reveal any bits that are 'less than'.
