  1. Just wanted to add my thanks to the organisers for their outstanding hospitality over the weekend, the catering was something else! We had a great time exhibiting Boston Frodsham which thankfully ran really well all weekend, hope we put on a good show. It was really good to get so much positive feedback and comments from the audience (there was obviously as lot of keen modellers there). Apologies if sometimes the conversations were to the detriment of the operation but hey, it's good to talk! I know from helping to organise our club's relatively modest open days that a lot of time and effort goes into running an exhibition and we should be eternally grateful to the people who give up their time to help us get further enjoyment from our hobby. Look forward to meeting up with Tony, Norman and the rest of the crew in the future.
  2. I'll be there with Boston Frodsham. Still a work in progress but some progress has been made!
  3. Twin LMS disc from MSE kit. Servo operated, LED lit DSC_1028.JPG DSC_1027.JPG Apologies if this is a ridiculous question but are the balance arms connected to the operating linkages on the disc signals and if so how have you done it? I've got some versions from Scale Signal Supply to build and can't figure out a way to do this.
  4. Can't wait to see them. Hope they're on a very fast aeroplane!
  5. Cheers, glad you like it. I can't take any credit for it though as it was done by Roger Manton (the guy you see doing weathering on the JLTRT stand at exhibitions). No connection other than a very satisfied customer who I would gladly recommend.
  6. As another member of the Invermire group and whilst respecting your opinion of part finished layouts appearing at exhibitions I hope Sean's reply has clarified some of the inaccuracies in your post. We received many favourable comments on the layout, in fact one chap was so impressed he's joined us! Oh and by the way we weren't just playing trains but we're running to a schedule designed to reflect the type of operations carried out in the Wick/Thurso area. If you'd like to come to one of our club nights (Wednesday 7 to 10 pm at Hessle Town Hall) we'd be pleased to describe the work done in even further detail. We'll even give you a cuppa!
  7. The guys at Hull Model Railway Club kindly invited us to exhibit Invermire at their show held over the last weekend. Despite being in a very cold corner of the hall we had a great time and would like to thank the organisers for their hospitality. The layout preformed well all weekend and it gave us the opportunity to try out the operating schedule that Sean had devised. By and large this went very well and really captured the types of operation which would have been carried out had the layout actually existed in real life. Below are a few hurriedly taken photos so apologies for the quality. Right, playtime over, back to work on the layout!
  8. Try looking at the sheets from L Cut Creative. Laser cut wood fibre board, much more accurately cut than some of the rubbish I've had from Slaters recently. We ran a fine scriber along the laser cut mortar joints to open them out a little.
  9. Good of you to come along, glad you enjoyed it. We had a really enjoyable and successful day and hope to repeat it in a couple of years time.
  10. I've recently helped with fitting the belt drive system to a set of JLTRT Western bogies. Using the narrow pulley on the driven axle allowed the use of the preferred Roxey Mouldings gearbox. However as you found, when installed, the belt was a very tight fit and the friction was such that very poor running resulted and the motor quickly became very hot. To get round this the bearing holes in the chassis were elongated to effectively reduce the axle spacing by about half a millimetre (not enough to be noticeable) and the problem was solved. The bogie now runs smoothly and freely. One big advantage of the belt system over the delrin chain is that the belt drive sprockets are fixed to the axles by grub screws rather than relying on a tight fit between the axle and the delrin sprockets which either makes assembly tricky or worse still if you open up the hole in the sprocket too much it then slips on the axle!
  11. Just a quick reminder of our Open Day which is this Sunday 1st October 10:00 to 16:00 at Hessle Town Hall, South Lane, Hessle, E Yorkshire, HU13 0RR
  12. A quick update on progress and also a note to say you can see all this in the flesh at our (Hessle Model Railway Group's) Open Day this Sunday 1st October between 10:00 and 16:00 at Hessle Town Hall, South Lane, Hessle, E Yorkshire, HU13 0RR. See the thread in the exhibition section for full details of the show. Anyway, further progress has been made on the signals; Work is in progress on the harbour wall using scribed DAS clay for the stonework with vertical timber sections; Installation of point rodding has commenced using cast stools, etches and square wire from MSE; And also installation of buffer stops using the kits from Ragstone Models;
  13. Re the single motor topic. All the Heljan locos on our layout Invermire have been converted to single motor drive and they run quite happily though admittedly they only pull a maximum of 4 coaches at a time. One benefit is that they are OK running on the standard Loksound decoder (as used in 4mm scale models) so saves the added expense of using the XL decoders. On some locos we have used a PRMRP bogie etch for the non powered bogie, on others we have retained the Heljan bogie but removed the motor and intermediate idler gears. Note I gather someone just removed the motor but left all the gears in place, which at some point locked up and the siezed wheels were dragged along by the powered bogie!
  14. Look forward to seeing you. Rob says he'll bring his hydraulics along (you'll just have to ignore the fact that the layout's supposed to be in Scotland)!

  16. Not an exhibition as such (there won't be any trade stands) but an opportunity to come and see the layouts under construction at the club plus a few invited ones, ranging from N Gauge to 16 mm Gauge live steam. Chance to have a chat with the builders/operators (and have a go if you want!) Venue is Hessle Town Hall, South Lane, Hessle, E Yorkshire, HU13 0RR. (About 1 mile from the Humber Bridge). Date, Sunday 1st October 2017, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission, £2.00, accompanied children free. Light refreshments available.
  17. I have not decided yet, but I am thinking about either manual pulleys & levers (like "wire in tube" point operation) or perhaps a couple of point motors operating each individual signal arm , I am open to other ideas though as I have no previous experience with signalling TBH If you're thinking of trying servo motors I'm quite happy to pop over and give some assistance.
  18. Good work on the signal Phil. I assume this going in the indoors section. What method of operation are you thinking of using?
  19. Agree with Softvark's reply on the mystery parts. With regard to the telegraph poles, if you wired them up you could use them as intended when down the bottom of the garden to order a cuppa from the kitchen staff!
  20. Just got my decoder back having had it reblown with the latest 37/0 sounds including the wheelslip option. It's fitted in my O Gauge loco which has an EM3 speaker in the fuel tank and a 50 x 30 mm rectangular speaker inside the body. All I can say is it's absolutely amazing!!!!! Mind you I'll have to turn the volume down before I dare take it to an exhibition.
  21. Just had another listen to it whilst wearing my hearing aid. Even more awesome!
