  1. Kernow’s weekly email has stated that they have their batch of ‘Charles’ engines now. I’d imagine that the postal strikes are going to hold up dispatch quite badly, but I’m hopeful of having it before Xmas EDIT: speak of the devil, an hour after I post this, an email arrives telling me that it has been dispatched

    I think the fact that the a4 is separated from its tender is also exaggerating it’s length :)

  4. it’s relatively easy to avoid patent infringement by altering aspects of the design. You can make use of the same principles using different electronics or mechanics and the can arrive at a basically similar result. Even if they want to use the technology directly, it’s perfectly possible that a sensible royalty agreement has been worked out for use of the patent, even if TRS is supplying Rapido directly now. as this smoke unit has been in the public domain for about a year now and we’ve not had a hint of any patent infringement I personally think the implication that Hornby is being underhanded is a bit much. In a world as small as the model train one, it would have gotten out if there were legal proceedings. (no implication of underhanded Hornby acts in the quoted post btw, it was just the most recent post that I could find mentioning it)

  7. A lot of the stories used Ffarquahar Mark 1 as their model for illustrations etc. The current touring layout is Ffarquahar Mark 2. The original was far larger and non-portable. The models did a lot for the stories - Duck’s ‘waddle’ did inspire the character, and Henry’s rebuild at Crewe in the stories was courtesy of Awdry finally calling quits on the first model of NWR no.3 and starting again with a black 5 model.

In fairness, Kernow’s full email acknowledges that they have made misjudgments with this project and that it would have been better for them to wait until further on in the project in order to get a price which was more stable for them. As it is, the long gestation time for this model appears to have eroded their profit margin to the point where the price will have to go up by quite a bit when they do go on sale. However, as a return on paying up front, they are offering to honour the original price of £179.99 for non-sound models. Considering the quality of their previous products and the sensational look to this one in the running sample, I don’t think there are any concerns on this front. I for one am happy to pay up for one at this stage of development

  10. I was getting a little uncertain about my order to be honest. Long development time and a recent request from Kernow asking for up front payment to help finance the project had me thinking about dropping the idea. then I saw the model running on the Hornby layout and immediately handed over the cash on Saturday night :) it looked that good

    Hornby Turbomotive

    Morning all, couldn’t actually find a bespoke Turbomotive thread to put these in. Had a brief chat about it with Montana. The EP in black is the loco in LMS condition and the bare metal engine is BR condition with the smoke deflectors. Apparently these are early EPs and have been made with as many tooling options as possible in order to test them, so they aren’t exactly representative of the finished product. Good and hefty models tho, so am personally looking forward to my LMS version.

  13. Got to say the ‘Lord President’ on the Hornby stand at the weekend had me seriously considering getting another one of these beauties on order. Already got 2007 in the pipeline. phone pic I’m afraid, but I think it still shows that this will be a most impressive model
  14. I think the vitriol that is spouting forth is rather uncalled for. Perfectly nice model, at a perfectly reasonable price for a semi-topical reason. Don’t like it, then not buying it is always an option. it smacks of people actively looking for reasons to be angry at Hornby, which is a bit peculiar to be honest.
  15. Half the time at international the ticket barriers are open on the station, so it may be worth checking to see if you could pop down. Of course, they could close them when you’re on the platform, but what’s life without a little danger? :)
  16. Yes. Picked up a DVD of his narrow gauge trips in north wales which record the narrow gauge workings very nicely. However, there is just a bit of SG track shown - there doesn’t appear to have been any standard gauge action when he was filming at the port. My guesses for locos would have been 3Fs and 4Fs based solely upon the fact that it was on an LMS route and the line would have needed reasonably light engines. thank you to everyone for your responses. Clearly needs a bit more research.
  17. Morning all, I'm highly tempted to jump with both feet into a PQR layout based around the dual gauge bridge shared by both the standard and narrow gauge railways across the river Cegin. However, for the life of me I can’t seem to find any details about the standard gauge trains which served the port. Does anyone have any pics or information that they could share of the locos in use and/or the makeup of the trains which served the port. Flexible on the exact dates involved, maybe leaning more towards the end of things in the 50s/60s, but again, any information is better than none :) if anyone has any general pics of the PQR that might be useful that would also be gratefully received Please make sure you have permission from copyright holder before posting :) thank you in advance:)

  20. Or even dispatched to customers? :) Seriously, I’m happy to wait for models of this quality. Although do I win anything for ordering my Caledonian sleeper coaches from my berth on the sleeper itself?
  21. my guess on this is that the longer you wait to send it, the longer until it comes back. As I understand what is happening, waiting for supplies is only one factor in the turnaround and the majority of the time the model spends away will be determined by the Labour involved in getting the corrections made to the lighting circuit. For my part, sending it off as soon as possible is the best bet to get it back quickly

  23. The X1 is by far the fastest way of doing it, although the X12 will get you there eventually too. You can catch the X1 opposite moor street station by the bullring and the X12 from Priory Queensway just outside of the large B&M.
  24. I’m fortunate enough to to live all out a twenty minute bus ride away from the NEC, so I’ll be heading over come what may.
  25. Looking forward to having my own number 93 running about for me. And am very impressed that the price has been kept despite what I imagine are mounting pressures to push it up. Good on Kernow here. looking pretty spiffy too
