  7. Just an update on the class 165/0 conversions. Photos are attached of 165004 2 car in NSE livery arriving at Silverbury, the club layout of South West Herts MRS. Visible are the hopper windows made from decals and just visible is the tripcock beam. The destination blind reads 'Silverbury'. The 165/0 is in the company of a Railtrack 121 and a Chiltern 168 unit. The layout is available for exhibition bookings - contact me for details. Also included is a photo of the 165/0 2 car in Chiltern Railways (post 2003) livery with the roof modified after conversion to air conditioning. This has now been progressed with the chassis and lighting installed and is having decals added.

  13. Matt I have converted a Bachmann class 166 in NSE livery to a NSE Chiltern lines NSE livery class 165. This required creating transfers for the hopper windows and the additional window in the standard class saloon. My club (SWHMRS) has a modern image Chiltern lines layout and I am now researching converting the Bachmann units to make a 2 car and a 3 car Chiltern Railways unit. This will need modification of window arrangements from the base Bachmann class 166. Is this the sort of thing you plan to do? Would you like a photo of the NSE 165? Cheers Tug60069
  14. As the originator of this thread I guess I should provide an update. Having established that the Foxfield Bagnall is much smaller than the Hornby Bagnall I looked at the various images of larger Bagnall products and decided that a hybrid of a cut down Hornby model on a Hornby Sentinel DM chassis might work. Then I got side tracked onto a Ruston 48DS... See below I'll start a separate post on this under 'Small shunters' Meanwhile here's how the modified Sentinel chassis turned out. Much of the blue moulding of the cab floor was cut away to footplate level The Bagnall cab and bonnet were reduced in height and checked on the chassis. The bonnet also had to be shortened and rebuilt with a taper towards the top. The radiator end still needs cutting down to the profile of the bonnet in these photos which show the cab and bonnet loosely in place. I think it's starting to look convincing. At my rate of modelling it should be ready for Christmas!
  15. A big thank you to all the exhibitors, traders, members and visiting helpers that made the exhibition a success. Thanks also to the modellers and public who attended - we received many positive comments. The exhibition aims to ensure that a number of the layouts have been covered in the national magazines and this year was no different, so we hope visitors enjoyed seeing 'in the flesh' some of the layouts that they have seen on paper.

  19. Sorry. First photo was still with dummy tool boxes. Later photo shows after their removal. The gap left will be filled with plasticard/filler.
  20. May thanks to Andy Y and Bobandhow for the photos. I will use these to check the sketch drawing I have done of the prototype. Meanwhile progress has been slow on the model but here are a few photos. 1 Bagnall dismantled. Dummy toolboxes cut off bonnet 2 Radiator grill separated from bonnet 3 Cab marked with masking tape ready for cutting down 4 Sentinel chassis with cab control desk removed to reveal DCC chip
  21. Just bumping this topic as I have a few Networker items listed on a well known auction site. Also, my version of the 1 car unit is shown below. I thought this could be a class 163 (as the 153 was also a 1 car unit). The model requires a few finishing details and transfers as a Chiltern Railways unit. It will be on our club layout (Silverbury) at the South West Herts Exhibition, Watford on 7th May.
  22. Having viewed many of the photos and videos of the prototype, I have determined approximately some of the key dimensions. I assumed that the buffer spacing followed a standard dimension (23mm in 4mm scale). From front views, this gave me a bonnet width and height and cab width and height. Projecting these onto side views, this gives a length over headstocks of about 60mm, so the prototype is a very small loco. As a comparison, this dimension on the A1 Models kit of the Ruston 48DS is 45mm ( a very small loco), the Sentinel is 85mm and the Hornby Bagnall chassis is 94.5mm. Rather than kitbash/scratchbuild a scale model and chassis of the Bagnall, I plan to cut down the Hornby body shell to fit the Sentinel chassis but maintain the generic 'look' of a Bagnall. I'll get on with this and post some pictures next time.
  23. Thanks Peterpiper and Moxy. I have found online a drawing of a 6 wheel Bagnall and the cab doors are quite tall, so the Hornby one may not be too far out height wise. The photo above showing the man in the flat cap is not conclusive on the height as he is probably at the controls and he may be seated. I'll have to try further research.
  24. I have a Hornby Bagnall which looks a good candidate for detailing and conversion for my EM layout. Does anyone know if there are any drawings available of the prototype which Hornby based this on? I know Hornby took a lot of liberties in producing this for the Thomas range and used one of their standard 0-4-0T chassis. The prototype (according to Wiki no 3027 - the last built by Bagnall ) is a diesel mechanical and could use the chassis from a Hornby Sentinel. The body looks oversized, particularly in width and could be slimmed down (as done by Tony Wood on a Hornby class 06 in around 2000). After adjusting the size, with new handrails and weathering a passable Bagnall should be possible. Any reasonable suggestions or help welcome.
