  1. It is a common misconception that all cattle methane is produced by farting cows, but the truth is that the majority is exhaled in their breath as a result of the fermentation process. I'm not sure how a cow can be described as overfed. Does anyone have data on the amounts of grass that a cow should eat each day?
  2. It was somewhat amusing to see the reaction of certain regular travellers who considered the compartment was designed personally for their sole use. I remember on a coastal trip from Brighton, probably to Eastbourne or Hastings many years ago, a person seemed completely put out when he opened the outside carriage door to discover me, SWMBO and three lively children occupying most of the seats. He looked at us with a stare of disdain, which is understandable after having stood at the precise point on the platform where he knew the carriage door would stop. To give him credit, he did sit it out in the corner for a while, but was probably relieved to get out at his destination.
  3. I remember getting an overnight train from Preston in 1978, after a mate and I had spent the day on the station. We found an empty Mk1 compartment, pulled down the blinds turned the heating to max and shut the door. With us both laid out across the seats each side of the compartment, and thought we may get a few hours of shuteye before Euston. However, first stop was Wigan; and within minutes of the train stopping, the compartment door opened and in walked some kind of local man mountain, who proclaimed "it's hot in here" and opened the window, then turned off the heating. FFS!! As we left Wigan for Warrington, we got up and went down the carriage where we soon found another empty compartment, shut the door, turned on the heater, etc., and repeated the whole process again. Fortunately, we were not disturbed again, apart from a ticket inspector at one point.
  4. D6562 and D6515 await departure with an Exeter to Waterloo service in 1970. Photographer unknown, my collection.
  5. It all sounds good, but wouldn't have been easier to escort her along to the BG or BSK where wider doors are available?
  6. D6529 and D6521 on PW duties at Bickley - September 24th 1961. No notes on image, but possibly a Norman Preedy shot.
  7. Second class compartments were good for sleeping, at least in my experience - but only if there were two people per compartment, one each side. I remember on a very exhausting three day tour of Scotland by train, I fell asleep on the way to Georgemas Junc with the sound of a 26 throbbing away through the open windows. Excellent.
  8. At Sleaford in the 1960s, it was a regular job for one of the porters to walk out onto the platform and shout "Boston train. All stations to Boston" (or equivalent if the train was heading for Grantham or Lincoln). As people have hinted, at large stations with overall roofs, it was impossible to understand what the announcer was saying because the sound just echoed back and forth and mixed with the general noise of steam, diesel, platform whistles, engine whistles, etc. If a Deltic was moving under the roof at Kings Cross, it was difficult to hear any other noise, let alone the station announcer. I presume the same applied at York, Newcastle and Edinburgh; but I didn't visit those stations regularly (more's the pity).
  9. It's not had the domino headcode treatment, so might have been U/S for a while.
  10. Those 'mirrors' really do show up well on that photo. I might reconsider my decision not to add them after looking at your excellent effort.
  11. I don't know about transfers, but I just painted mine (4mm scale). When I re-assembled the first one and looked through the windows from a 'distance' (maybe 4-6 inches) I found that the detail of my painting was not particularly noticeable anyway. However, mine were corridor coaches and so it depended on which way round the coaches were on the track. Therefore I just made sure I had a decent representation of the internal colours and was happy with that. I had thought about adding representations of mirrors or photos above the seat backs, but I decided that (for me, anyway) it was hardly worth it.
  12. There is a short clip of milk tanks being shunted by a Jinty at about 6min into the Marsden Rail video Carlisle (volume 3). Unfortunately it is rather underexposed, but he does say that the tanks had come from Appleby and the Borders region, and were shunted into full trains at Carlisle. A class 40 is seen heading south from the station with a full train. Of course this was the early 1960s, but I doubt operations had changed too much.
  13. Micheldever apparently. The unit arrived at Horwich on 12 Sep 1980.
  14. No, the Giraffe Car was a light hearted imaginary creation; unlike the Battlespace Turbo Car, and Turbo Launchers - which were based on real vehicles stored in Box Tunnel, but never mentioned due to high classification under the Official Secrets Act. For some reason, there seems to be a black helicopter hovering over my garden...... Sorry, but I have to go now.
  15. A job lot for which he paid about 50p each, I suspect. Not a bad mark-up. Harrods would be proud.
  16. An excellent nostalgic video. Thanks for livening up my hot and humid afternoon.
  17. No, 37s on parcels does not seem to be a regular occurrence - at least if my collection of images is anything to go by. However, I did find a couple. Here is 37298 with a GWML service near Waltham St Lawrence in May 1976. And here is an ER version, but I can't quite read the number. Looks like the ECML to me, but someone might be able to identify further details.
  18. I recently purchased a batch of John Vaughan b/w negatives at auction. The auction house stated that copyright was included, therefore I think I am within my rights to post this here. This is a GWML parcels train late 80s-style, with 47592 in charge, passing Waltham St Lawrence on 3rd June 1988.
  19. Imagine the froth if Hornby produced something like that these days.
  20. Anyhow, I have begun the slow process of transcribing the register details onto the 1954 page on my spotting log site. I like to add shed allocations where possible, to give a more complete picture. https://spottinglogs.co.uk/1954-2/ If anyone wishes to have a look, you will need to scroll right down to the bottom of the page for October as everything is in date order. Any comments regarding the entries/workings/destinations would be welcome; as my knowledge of services for anywhere in 1954 is sparse, let alone the specific Hamilton/Uddingston/Motherwell area.
  21. Railcar.co.uk suggests that the last two were taken out of service in August 1981. https://www.railcar.co.uk/type/class-111/operations
  22. You may think that running three different front end varieties of green class 33s is a little too far fetched, especially when you have brush painted the window surrounds of one of your syp models; only to discover your shade of yellow was different to that of your rtr models lower panel and the whole thing looks completely unrealistic. Is it tho' ?
  23. Maybe the 86 had failed and the 304 had dragged the whole train into the platform? (Well I can dream.....)
