  1. The roof was shaped on a ... belgian trappist beer bottle. Paper smokestacks and lanterns
  2. 3 versions of the belgian vicinal steam tramway: From left to right. 1) 3D printed on my Prusa Mk3 2) paper version cut using the silhouette portrait cutting machine 3) 3D printed version at Shapeways.
  3. StuartM, to answer your question, there is a software package " that comes with a whole bunch of textures like brick and stone walls etc, and also a good selection of windows including their arches and sills that can be dragged and dropped into place on a textured background." The name is "Model builder" , https://evandesigns.com/products/model-builder , but it is mostly US oriented. I agree, a good way to go is to scratchbuild usink Inkscape.
  4. Local pub on my TT9mm scale belgian steam tramway layout. Cut entirely using the Silhouette Portrait. The paper kit is from Scalescenes.
  5. I model the Belgian vicinal steam tramway ( 1/120 TT scale ) . The best way I found is to use some Sculptamold "Sculptamold® is a dry, white, non-toxic compound that combines the best features of clay, plaster, and papier mache, does not shrink, and is durable for dioramas, 3-D sculptures, model railroad scenery "
  6. The goal is to Download the free Scalescenes kit R024_TX24_OO pdf file and , as an example , have the Silhouette Portrait cut some parts using only the Scalescenes original polygons ( I didn't add any polygons ) That process requires the Silhouette Studio software designer edition ( In order to merge .pdf files and to work using layers) Procedure: 1) Download the free R024_TX24_OO.pdf file from the Scalescenes website 2) Merge ( import ) page 1 with the Silhouette Studio 3) Ungroup the page , this results in a bunch ( more than 1000 ) of polygons 3) Delete the unnecessary polygons and for the example we keep the Window sill , Chimney cap cover layer , External chimney cover layer , External front wall cover layer, External side wall cover layers and the roof tiles. 4) Separate those polygons in 3 layers : print , score and cut layers 5) In the "Send" window, select the "send" submenu 6) for each layer, create a cutting profile (it depends of the paper thickness ) : No cut for the print layer, low force for the score layer , and normal force for the cut layer. Here are 2 very important screen dumps: separate the polygons in 3 layers and cut by layers. In order to avoid any copyright problem , the Silhouette Studio file is the coal13.studio file and it can be downloaded from the Scalescenes Modellers Group facebook group.
  7. Outstanding switching layout. First I like breweries, I'm a homebrewer and my 3 micro-layouts feature breweries. Thank you for sharing. that sunk barge looks great.
  8. Using the silhouette portrait to cut ( part of ) scalescenes kit I needed a couple of coal staithes for my TTm scale layout. 1) I downloaded the free scalescenes kit R024 Weighbridge/Coal Office2) import the .pdf file ( page 2 ) in the Inkscape software Here is the result: 3) ungroup and delete what we don't need 4) Save the document as a .svg file ( using the "plain SVG " option ) 5) import the .svg file in the silhouette studio software ( designer edition ) 6) Change the color of the 3 white bars used as a guide to glue the edge of the sides . Change the outline color and the fill color of those 3 bars. It is necessary so they won't be cut in the cutting process. That is the result: One can see the grey lines where the cuts will be made 7) make a second copy of the staithe , add the registrations marks and print . 8) On the cut settings window , select the advanced cut mode select that grey color ( RGB 169, 160, 161 ) for the cutting. 9) start the cutting process and in about 1 minute all the cutting is done. 10 ) laminate and clue. Jacques
  9. Thank you Rob Pulham for your opinion. The shells of the closed vicinal wagons are 3D printed . I designed the shell using the Sketchup software and sent the .stl computer file to Shapeways. 10 days later the 3D printed shell was in my mailbox. The material used by Shapeways to produce the shell is the FUD ( frosted ultra detail ). The "texture" is a defect inherent to the 3D printing technology. The part is printed layer by layer. But on a wagon shell at the 1/20 scale ( TT scale ) and seen from "the 3 feet rule" it is almost unnoticeable. The closed wagon ready to ship out beer from the Monrtfort brewery. Jacques
  10. Closed TT scale wagon after painting. I'm satisfied with the result. Now I have 2 wagons a haussettes ( high sided wagons ) to paint. Jacques
  11. I started to cut the tamiya tape for masking the TT9 scale covered wagons The silhouette portrait did a good job X-acto is dead, long live silhouette. Jacques
  12. 1st version of the SNCV belgian vicinal railway wagon a haussettes ( high sided wagon ) . It's too high and too long but I like the result and want to improve on it. Jacques
  13. A slate roof for the Montfort TT scale brewery. The rows of slates are printed on Avery sticker project paper then cut using the silhouette portrait i printed a template on cardstock to glue the slates at the right place Jacques
  14. Thank you JimRead, John Bossard ( hello neighbour ) , John New for the suggestions. If possible I would like to use paper or cardstock instead of "foreign" material for the gutters. I used some wax paper rolled around a barbecue stick and then coated with cyanoacrylate glue to make the lanterns and chimneys of my TT scale vicinal steam tramway. TT scale paper gutters are smaller so I don't think I can use the same process. Maybe corrugated cardboard ? Jacques
  15. 1) print a paper sheet with the registration marks , cut a 7" by 6" and glue it on the mat 2) cut a 2" by 18 mm piece of Tamiya masking tape and glue it on the mat where the mask to be cut will be located 3) Draw the mask where the piece of masking tape is located And ... cut If you want to cut some color paper ( particularly black ) you must add some registration marks printed on white paper Jacques
