  1. I always read this thread with interest but admit to little knowledge of ships, one thing I've always wondered is do ship actually have sea cocks ?.. I've seen them being opened to scuttle a ship in an old war film, my question is, why would ships have them as their only purpose is to sink them surely ??
  2. from my memory of early teenage spotting days in the early 80's, the doorway in the wall lead to the outside but there was a sizable whitewashed area surrounding it with an outline of brickwork suggesting there was some kind of building attached to the side, it cant have been very deep though as the access footpath was down that side of the shed.... the rear of the shed from memory wasn't far from the boundary fence with the road with strengthening buttresses with no space for a building to the rear
  3. In 1990 I went on a motorbike trip around Europe ,I’m planning on retracing my steps and I need help identifying this location, we travelled down from Lyon so it will have been at the Tournon-sur-Rhòne end of the line, if anyone can remember this loco on a plinth I would be so grateful if they could pin point it.. many thanks Darren
  4. i have been reading a book abouts the 'Peaks' and it mentioned that the nameplates were removed around the 1970's because of a spate of thefts, i presume other classes where included in this spate i.e. the 40's etc, my question is which nameplates were stolen ?, and were any ever recovered or have they surfaced in auction houses over the years etc...i remember walking through a named 40 on Northwich shed and it didnt look any easy job to remove the nameplate but then i was only a kid with a rudimentary tool kit for fixing my Raleigh Bomber at the time...
  5. if you try Facebook theres Middlewich past & present site which sometimes posts copies of a magazine called 'Salt News' i think, the last edition had pictures of the middlewich salt works with pictures of the track layout/sidings etc and pic of a 31 ( i think ) shunting some of the salt wagons. Darren
  6. Hi, forgive me if i can't see for looking, i've just paid the balance for my sound version, but i cant see the option to purchase the extra trailing car ( i did select one at pre-ordering), any help pointing me in a probably obvious direction would be welcome, thanks Darren
  7. no, the ICI avenue works at winnington, northwich
  8. Hi Adrian, will you posting your photo's of the concrete beam wagons, i for one would be most interested...
  9. Hi Christian, i was given some 1:2500 plans of winnington, northwich etc many years ago,but i'm sure they covered the 1960's though, i can try and find them if they might be of any use and try and get them scanned to a more managable size as they are quite large. Darren
  10. Ahh, thanks jon, i presume its at the garrison and is it a museum or available for viewing ?
  11. Hi Jon, forgive my ignorance but where is Tidwork ?.
  12. Thanks for all the info sofar , i have Peter Tatlows book and R.J.Esserys book LMS wagons v2 but i'm still puzzled as to why there is only one picture in existence (so far)
  13. Many thanks Clive for all that information and solving the mystery, would anyone still have drawings or approximate dimensions for these beasties..
  14. Hi Justin , i did think about them being converted into Transformer MB's, Gridwags, Congers or Pollen B's but the individual bogies had 8 wheels each whereas everything else including the Boiler set only has 6 wheels per bogie so the mystery continues.
  15. Hi John, that was my first thought as it does look rather over engineered to carry gun barrels (which granted were damn heavy) but to my knowledge only germany and USA built rail mounted guns so i can only defer to the authors info in the book.. daren
  16. Hi Brian, your probably right about them being built for WW1, further info says the last one was transferred to the Concrete beam wagon fleet in the mid 60's which suggest it may have lasted till late 60's or maybe beyond ?, how wasnt a wagon that large still around in the 60's photographed by a good few people for being something out of the ordinary, and its not like it could be hidden away very easily !!.
  17. I was looking through 'British Railway Wagons - their loads and loadings Vol 1' by Brian Grant & Bill Taylor and on page 115 there is a picture of a 'gunset' wagon for the carriage of large gun barrels which i have never seen or heard of before, these had 16 wheel bogies compared to the 'boiler set' which had 12 wheel bogies, my question is, i presume they would have been built for WW2 and the info says that only one remained by 1964, so there must be more pictures of them if they were around for 20yrs or more but web searches have drawn a blank so i'd be grateful if anyone has any info, pics or drawings as i'd like to scratch build one of these oddities one day. Darren
  18. Hi Paul, if you want some accurate Diamond frame bogie for it Bachmann do a bolster wagon which i bought quite cheap off ebay . see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bachmann-33-857-30-TON-BOGIE-BOLSTER-WAGON-BR-LMS-GREY-/220946300402?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item33716cfdf2
  19. Home early for a change, might do a bit more a the garden railway, need to put another 40ft of wooden beams down.

  20. Another good book that relates to stories of what was like to drive and fire the garretts, its called 'Hobsons Choice - recollections of a north country engineman' by DENNIS HOBSON. ISBN 0-86093-370-9.
  21. I used the Hornby chip, you have to stand it on its end in the cab behind the motor but with some black heat shrink round the chip you dont notice its there. I'll try do dig the loco's out and post a pic as they're all packed away due to complaints of household management wanting the front room back.
  22. I have got two of the pugs, both of which i have chipped up to dcc, and surprisingly they can pull a surprising amount of wagons given their small stature and weight, i have a video of one pulling 12 of the old triang Murgatroyd bogie tanks (albeit they're all updated with romford wheels) . You used to be able pick them up fairly cheaply on ebay. hope this helps. Darren
  23. I too thought i'd escaped the dreaded hayfever this year, but am struck down today !. Time to seek relief in my man cave and play trains !
