Hi Geoff, copyright issues but.... 5149 eases past Helwith signal box on a very wintry March 12, 1969. The locomotive was at this time allocated to Leeds Holbeck (55A), so trips over the Settle & Carlisle would be nothing unusual. The final four Class 24's had been delivered from Derby to Gateshead early in 1961. All four moved to Leeds in the summer of 1968, then all went on to Eastfield in October 1971. http://www.derbysulzers.com/5149helwith.jpg 5149 again, this time at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, involved in a shunting operation. The sidings here served the large quarry near Horton. The signal box closed on May 1st 1984. After transfer to Eastfield 5149 remained in service for one year, before catching fire on a train bound for Killoch colliery. Hi Mike, love the layout, but one thing, wouldn't the lead flashing be placed over the tiles to keep the rain out rather than under? I'm not criticising, just trying to be helpful. Keep up the fabulous work. Boogy Edit due to bad english.

Just had a quick and probably pathetic thought re numbering wagons. AFAIK you can buy blank transfer sheets that you are able to print what you want on, but the vast majority of colour printers do not come with white ink. So why not paint white on the wagon side where the numbers are going and just print the black rectangle 'background' of the numbers leaving the chosen numbers blank on the transfer so the white shows through. Probably been thought of before by several people and dismissed, but it would allow you to use one custom transfer per number rather than placing individual digits. Boogy

If I'm being hyper critical, the only thing I would say is that the ridge tiles' apex are not sharply defined enough, but that is the cruel nature of close up photography. I've been following your posts since the previous layout and have to say that your work is of a very high standard indeed. Boogy

Hi Jeff, I've read all 100 pages as the thread has developed and deviated and this is my whole second post. I really like your tunnel mouth but for me (and probably only me) the arch doesn't quite look right. Looking closely at a picture of the actual tunnel mouth you are representing, the arch stones actually 'key' in with the rest of the wall rather than being on a curve on the outside. I've tried (very poorly) to illustrate what I mean below. I think trying to replicate this would turn your great model into a marvellous one but I of course leave it completely up to you. ps. You did say you were open to suggestions

Hi Jeff, I'm glad you like my comment. I've always been a fan of the one-liner/micro joke. I very rarely post as I am unfortunately only an armchair modeller these days. The last layout I had was over 25 years ago when I was about 14. I've always been interested in railways both 12" to the foot and smaller scales. I generally tend to post if I can add something to the topic whether someone has asked for advice or opinion etc. My experiences are generally inferior to those of posting members in both modelling and prototype knowledge. I think you have an excellent layout and it does help I lean towards LMR as my preferred region. I've always been interested in the S&C and watching you build those curved viaducts got me hooked. If the boards are to scale from the red box drawn above they would be approx 32 feet long. Me thinks some inevitable compression is in order for SAC.

Any heating above a low red heat will anneal brass. The faster you cool it down from hot (ie. quench with eg. water), the more completely it anneals. Other types of metal/alloy (eg. steels) will harden on quenching but not brass. The one exception (as there's always at least one) its Muntz metal(60Cu/40Zn) but this is rarely used in modelmaking. The plate that sticks in my mind that I have seen on several makes of car over the past few years in Manchester is AVE 1T but my all time personal favourite used to be about the Blackpool area in the 1980's and, I'm only guessing it used to belong to an Irish man, was POT 80.
