  1. While there is alot of madness there are some amazing deals you can get. I bought a Crownline West Country, brand new and unstarted for £59 including postage. When i got the kit it also had a full Markits wheel set with it, so the kit in real terms was £3 - I am over the moon! If you want real madness at the moment have a look at what some negatives are going for. A neg of Monsal Dale in 1968 that just show the platforms, no buildings and not that special for £102 ! one of Millers Dale went for £46 and a slide of Winchester with a SR DMU went again for over £100. Who says there's a recession. Finally for full madness how about this one a finescale B1 that in the 1970s would have been excellent but at £160 has not sold in 2 years http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HAND-BUILT-FINE-SCALE-00-BRASS-KIT-LNER-B1-4-6-0-LOCO-/310251025498?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item483c66f45a
  2. looks amazing, what a build, I must get on with mine and get if finished.

See my comments. You've probably already spotted all the errors in the kit and drawings anyway!

I thanks yes, I can cure the cab front and buffer beam, but am really not sure on the drop at the front

  5. looking very good, nice that you decided to add steam heat. I took the view on my first one that it would have not got it being as it was to be the 9f. Look forward to seeing it finished Kind regards Duncan
  6. Hi, You really are setting a really high standard and it is great to see how to do it, I must get round to my conversion and this is a good incentive. The tear shaped object on the drivers side of the smokebox is the atomiser for the lubricators, you cannot see the superheaters on the outside of the loco. As for a good book on the basics i would suggest either "How steam locomotives really work" by Semmens and Goldfinch or "Raising Steam, the design operation and driving of steam locomotives" by D Griffiths. If on the other hand you want a more detailed text then either "handbook for steam locmotive enginemen" published by the British Transport commission or for even more technical book then "locomotive Management, Cleaning Driving Maintenance the last version of which was published in about 1955 (that i know to) Hope this helps Kind regards Duncan
  7. What a shame, it did not sell!
  8. What is striking (and is great) about this thread and the photos is that everyone appears to be full of praise for this engine, with not one complaint. Hornby really need a pat on the back for getting an engine so spot on. Roll on the B17s
  9. A couple of other thoughts on this excellent thread would be English Heritage, they hold a surprising amount of railway pictures, ok they are not cheap but they might just be able to help. They usefully send out photocopies so you can choose what you want to order. Another thing i have found as invaluable rather than just collecting the information, if your going to prepare plans to make models offer them back to who ever gives you information. Daft as it sounds if people offer to let you see information you have asked about, follow it up. Finally dont forget ask others if they know of others you should be speaking to. Certainly for drawings of the S&D at the southern end , you find working on one station gives information on a different one so more information is spread around. all the best Duncan
  10. Measuring Mangotsfield station to do drawings tommorow

  11. Hi Ben, Did you get the next photo i forwarded to you of Sturminster, there will be a couple more to come soon. Kind regards Duncan
  12. I will see if i can find the part built engine over the weekend and post some images
  13. Being my first ever etched effort the drawing was not very good, Grainge and Hodder were very patient with me. I learnt very quickly that everything has got to be perfect to run. I will see if i can find the part built frames and show you how they look (if i can find them in the garage having just moved) These split frames look hard work, so I will watch how you do it with keen interest and then maybe have a go.
  14. look forward to seeing it, i too went for the Hornby brit body. My main problem was the etch for the frames was the first i ever did and getting it to run was a real pain. The third which is only part built has a revised chassis, and etched body which is part built.
  15. Hi no, i was meaning the 2-8-2 which is good as that means i used the right numbering. What livery are you going for i went for unlined BR Black, where as the second for a friend was in lined BR green? Regards Duncan
  16. Hi What made you go for 93000, is there some evidence that this is the numbers that would have been used?, I went for 91000 for my version. Regards Duncan
  17. I Have a scale plan of Goathland which from the crossing at the Grosmont end to the Road bridge at the Pickering end was about 9'. However as Dave rightly says to do it justice you need more lenght than that. Good luck with the project and look forward to seeing how you do. The Hornby water tower, waiting shelter and coal drops are right although the goods shed and station buildings need some alteration to make them accurate the Goathland. Best regards Duncan
  18. Hi John, I will see if i can post it on the forum Kind regards Duncan
  19. Hi John, I came accross your thread today, it looks really good. If its of any good i have got a shot showing part of the old footbridge which has now gone if you have not found a shot. It is in the background with s dub dee running on the central road. Kind regards Duncan
