    Matchbox Digression

In the opening post of this thread, I mentioned the origins of my fictional railway network: at around eight or nine years old, a schoolfriend and I created an imaginary railway on the closed line between Chorley and Cherry Tree, and used our joint collections of Matchbox push-along die cast locos and stock as the operating fleet.

At the time I noticed that the flangeless wheels were just about OO gauge, and at a pinch, you could balance a loco on OO track... but they'd fall off at the first hint of motion.  Even back then I toyed with the idea of somehow fitting OO gauge wheels so that they could be pushed along on my model railway, however it was not within my means to make such modifications at the time.  One might argue that it still isn't, but...

    20240221090256P2040045.JPG.a00c6879567e5caf113cf7c8200b45d0.JPG

The Matchbox "Rail Freight" diesel was issued in metallic green and later yellow - these somewhat rough examples were selected to donate their bodies to science, along with a third that my dad had presented me with as an amusing retrospective gift a few years ago.  And the experiment?  Motorising two of them - one for 009, and one for OO.

First things first, the bodies were drilled apart, and dunked in some gloop to strip the remnants of paint off.  While that was going on, I scoured available motors/chassis, and Halling of Austria seemed to offer the easiest option with their Vario V3 bogie.

    20240301121253P2040177.JPG.7767400a671fce12f55e9464767a1484.JPG

Two of the underframes were selected for attacking with a Dremel, making a slot sufficiently wide to fit the barrel of the motor through.  As it happens, the built-in struts on the motor bogies were a perfect height to rest the underframe directly on.  The wheelbase is about 2mm shorter than the Matchbox original wheels, but it's not obvious behind the cast axleboxes.

    20240301183612P2040183.JPG.62a6edff121901a82c80287ab333b0fd.JPG

OO and OO9 motors fixed in place with a spot of superglue, and underframes given a bit of matt black.

And that's as complicated as it gets.  I've not messed with couplings yet, except to add a temporary wire loop for the 009 model.

The bodies were given an initial coat of paint, then stripped off again when I didn't like it, and started again.  Here's the 009 body, which also had the raised chevrons filed off both ends, and a bit of plasticard added to the front radiator to form a whisker-like bit of styling.

    20240303155822P2040229.JPG.1dfad06fe80b6e3198bc9aeaf00d9b49.JPG

It's a little chunky compared to the other 009 locos and vehicles, but fits through all the infrastructure, and hauls almost anything.

Meanwhile, the OO bodies received a couple of different liveries.  Back in the day, my friend and I created classes 18 and 19 for our fleet under the BR TOPS numbering system - the 19s were distinguishable by their wasp nose ends, while the 18s never had this feature.  So for tradition's sake, and to feel like a kid again, 19016 was hand painted into Humbrol No 3 (the usual for our fleet back in 1980) while the other body has become the first class 18 to receive "North Central" black and silver. 😉

Classes 18 and 19 are not shunters in the official North Central numbering system, but in this instance, I'm going with tradition and happy memories.

Of course, I only have one powered OO underframe, but therein lies the fun part - having drilled the bodies off in the first place, they can now be slid off and swapped onto the same powered underframe in a couple of seconds.

Here both locos speed past the Class 22 construction project.  More of which will be coming shortly!

Excellent stuff, I think I'll go measure up one of them diesels for my 009 set up.

Great job as ever, looking forward to next update.

Ooh those walkways do look good James and the ladders are very fine, NO I must look away now to prevent spending more cash!! I see what you mean about replacing the thick tank bases with thin plasticard, it makes a difference. Nice work but ditch those tension locks.

    Geoff

Thanks Geoff, we are slowly getting round to getting some of the more fixed rakes into closer coupled sets etc but there's always something more fun to be doing!

Sounds interesting, though I’m not sure how well that would work on a model, compared with mixed gauge track (though I think the locos for that line are/were available in kit form in 009).

In a similar vein, there was another location where the 2ft gauge internal system had no wagons at all, but a Lister loco was used to haul standard gauge coal wagons. I’ll need to check the reference in the Bradford Barton industrial narrow gauge book when I get home, but a quick Google suggests this was J. S. Fry at Somerdale. Again though, this used a cable with the loco running on a parallel track rather than dual gauge track (I’m not sure why but I imagine it would permit a simplified track layout - the loco would be able to go back past the wagon without the use of points for instance). This would similarly be difficult to model, unless you either used manual uncoupling for the cable or did a very simple layout with the loco and wagon simply passing through the scene and the cable attachment taking place off-scene. In this case I’m not sure why a standard gauge loco wasn’t used, possibly there was a weight restriction.

The models are certainly available from RT Models as kits to build around a Farish 08, RT markets 3 of them and the 4th is pretty easily built from a Langley WD Hunslet kit.

    post-5804-0-31165200-1529745247.jpg.d0ff0d1a8585083b1d23b2d75d96956d.jpg20230928_213810.jpg.06e2035f573f3384b244667ddb2809d5.jpg

Like you say any model trying to portray rope/cable working is nigh o  impossible, one was I suppose would be to have motorised wagons and with a bit of careful control/dcc you could possibly get an approximation?

Dual gauge is certainly best thing to look at, I can't think of an exact example but didn't one of the Welsh quarry interchanges have a bit of dual gauge/cross  shunting.

Another interesting option I think was the Leek and Manifold where the NG had wagons that SG wagons could be shunted onto and then taken up the NG line, that would be an interesting operation.

  4. Probably a bit hard to model but the Harrogate Gas Works interchange at Bilton junction on the old Harrogate- Ripon line had an arrangement of pulleys/cables & gravity where the lower level narrow gauge engine could shunt the full/empty standard gauge wagons on the upper level.

Not sure exactly how it was done but you could see a big pulley wheel in the coal drop wall.

Well James I was originally going to use the brass walkways but as these models are crude in other areas I decided to stick with the moulded walkways which when weathered give a fair representation. It`s just a case of how far you want to go with trying to make a silk purse etc, also the cost mounts up after new wheels, ladders, paint and transfers have been added, you have to draw the line somewhere. I would love to see your TTAs, post a picture soon.

OK so just text my dad to see if he'd take a couple of pics, I think this is about half of them, iv lost track!20240323_152920(1).jpg.9da627864fbd7eb888f08cf7f040dd2f.jpg20240323_152949.jpg.9bfe4cf1dff551e52ed1bb5f505c7b3f.jpg20240323_152911.jpg.5b30a7c2616d4bbb1c009591287e8ed6.jpg20240323_152928.jpg.5d2472a788d057d1fe3b9a5c10acd73f.jpg20240323_152920.jpg.f9cae4a0fa1aec5dbae2f92f43dee242.jpg

I think the black ones may need a dust and possibly a coat of satin varnish, also the tension locks need replacing too.

Yeah I know what you mean about the cost soon catching up when you do a few. I had a few missing walkways so had to get the brass ones but then once you do a couple then the others have to match so all mine got new walkways. I did modify them a bit though to do some different variations so helps break them up.

Like you say a decent paint job n weathering really helps them and they are still pretty dam cheap.

Iv gone though the current phone and my older one but cannot find any Pics! Must be a bit further back so next time I'm up at Dads I'll get them out n get some snaps, the build pics were on my thread but I think the great glitch wiped them out.

Replacing the end ladders with finer brass offerings improves the look along with finer wheels from Bachmann. My rake is permanently close coupled using bent paper clips, I agree with James these models can be made to look more convincing with a little work.

They look excellent Geoff, are they the original cat walks? I re did all mine with A1 models brass walkways and ladders but looking at yours it hardly seems worth it!

I have a large rake of the old Hornby TTA wagons. I've stripped them all down to fill and sand the seams on the tanks ready for detailing, repainting and new transfers. I will also be replacing the wheels and couplings. Are there any options out there to improve the look of the underframes?...not looking for superdetailing the areas that can't be seen, but would like them to look a little less toylike when running

Evening Jabee, I didn't attempt to change too much below solebar on mine as it seemed like a lot of work to do so many but one thing I think makes a real difference is when the body is off, gluing a plasticard sheet over chassis and then removing the over thick base of the tank. Cut off as much as I could and the sanded down the remaining base ensuring all kept flat.

After filling and sanding all the holes and seams you can glue the remaining barrel to the chassis which looks much less toy like afterwards. Can't find pics just now but will share when I do.

Hornby TTAs do scrub up well for a fraction of the price of the latest stuff.

  9. Evening all, I took the day off on Friday to make the most of a quiet house to tidy up and most importantly crack on with transfers for the various coaches filling the living room.

I managed to go through a whole pack of Fox's white lining and thankfully had a bit left from previous to get everything lined out, glad the 2D BG is plain blue on 1 side!

Saturday I managed a bit of time to weather things down a bit and tidy up any loose ends paint wise and likewise tonight so as these stand they are just awaiting the arrival of fresh rattle cans of Humbrol satin to land the once sprayed up I'll add all the shiny brass door handles etc- I know they were usually painted body colour on the real things but if I'm adding brass ones I'll keep them brass.

Pics below of the current batch:

    20240319_223852.jpg.35d1fa2b8ef7681073bdfe0e478fe539.jpg20240319_223913.jpg.f87e44bcc959fd70275b340cd3e098b7.jpg

Diagram 165 Gresley TPO, heavily bashed by an excellent modelling friend for me, started life as a Hornby Stanier TPO, extended, lots of scratch built detail made up and on Bachman bogies, tranductor gear from Isinglass and I'll add netting after varnishing. I have got a kit of the Diagram 342 POT to go with this so should be next up, hopefully the two will look something like this when done:

Royal Mail TPO carriage at York

To add to the ranks of spurious things, here is my take on a MK2D BG, made up from the brakecsections of two BSO's when we made a TSO, decided to do one side plain blue on it to slot into the parcels rake. Interesting little thing and should look good on the end of the mk2 rake

    20240319_223931.jpg.37ec978c1d2604a144e2932435e856c7.jpg20240319_223947.jpg.e0a98d173326b1014bba074ed2378728.jpg

Here is the other bits of the BSO's, I still think the Airfix 2d best captures look to my eyes and yes I know they are a bit long in the tooth now but at least you can pick them up cheaply!

    20240319_224052.jpg.094f826f12e3187f50f35a56c64746bf.jpg

Suburban lav comp, bachman donor ciach with comet sides, lots of holes drilled for hinges which was a chore but very much worth it. Keen eyed may spot one of the bogies is kit master vintage due to the original backman bogies being a bit bust. Itl do for now!

    20240319_224025.jpg.7ec0037b6094bc7519f2ae1546f33a61.jpg

Stanier SK M13135 M allegedly one of only two SK's to get blue and grey, this is some ancient M&L models brass sides from ebay for 3.20 mounted on an Airfix brake 3rd bodie/ chassis. Roof ribs and vents are all new. I think this coach cost less than a tenner to get all the bits assembled, bargain against the cost of a new Bachmann one.

    20240319_224136.jpg.cf5cad791828242150b0a6b1257aeb78.jpg

Tri Ang CK, pretty much bog standard Tri Ang but with a more modern Hornby roof that has correct roof vents etc which helps the look no end. Usual things of bogie pivots moving back and higher, comet retracted buffers and corridor end plate

    20240319_224358.jpg.64114456ab71532981e851a78ff31b23.jpg

Met Cam 1957 prototype FK- This started life as a Mainline BSK I think, I like to use mainline coaches for brass over lays as the bogies are in the right place and the body shells are nice and solid to work with. A new rainstrip soon discuises the thickness of the brass.

Sides are Southern Pride, I was hoping yo get the matching SK too but it's out of stick and not likely to be produced again, interior also from SP. I particularly like the simple roof layout and the vinyl window frames really make the non standard layout come to life.

    20240319_225218.jpg.ae64d5fe4d30c9da64fcbe5974ea3e7b.jpg

Finally, last but not least E1106 Booth Car, what we believe to be a comet test build of the Booth Car that didnt go on sale so this could be unique. Also the model is of the pre refurbished coach so doesn't have the extra toilet window I believe the Southern Pride sides/kit does. I am very pleased with how its come out so far, iv even come to like the green and red interior decor!20240319_224325.jpg.07cbd8847babb5afce369c3015715bf5.jpg20240319_224241.jpg.1598a41f1d95cf881016931c6f93ea39.jpg

It should really stand out in a rake and is pretty heavy!

Big thanks go to @Clive Mortimore & @Mallard60022 for the model ending up with me to build/paint and also to @ColinK for the extra transfers sent last week to help speed it up.

That's all for now, hopefully I can get these varnished sooner rather than later to get on with other stuff.

    Cheers

Not sure if this is allowed but I found these

Evening all and thanks again MJI for the int pics. I bought an interior seating pack from Southern Pride but it doesn't come with the full layout of the interior so these pics have been invaluable.

    20240311_233848.jpg.311321f3839a72f0f61aa179c92ed821.jpg20240311_233901.jpg.cf7152ddbc542813165efe1000ab874f.jpg20240311_233911.jpg.bc8056b7579098495df1acc302d73779.jpg

The bar area has been fun to do this evening but the interior other than the bar at this end of the coach is pretty much guess work on my part. To be honest, once the roof is on you won't see much but I'd be interested to know what is correct in this area. The model is the pre refurb body without the extra toilet window on the corridor side.

Lining is on order so this is getting pretty close to finishing off.

Still to do are bogie step boards and final bits of paint work tidying.

  12. Evening all, it seems things were plodding on rather slowly then suddenly this weekend have suddenly got to the close to transfers stage.

So since the last update lots of coats of rail grey and blue have been applied over various stuff, maroon on the TPO as well.

The Stanier coach is an SK not a CK as I remembered its been converted from a 57ft brake end.. one side is currently looking good awaiting transfers but the other had a bit of a paintwork failure when the masking tape brought off 2 primer coats and probably 4 coats of grey. Must have got knocked or a bit of grease stopped the initial coat from sticking. This then got sanded back to solid paint and more grey applied, hopefully masking up again tomorrow.

    20240310_122948.jpg.b99fc32c201eceb749dad8ab57db863d.jpg

The 2d TSO and BG bashes are looking good, the BG is blue and grey one side and plain blue the other so I can letter it up as parcels or something on the plain blue side. Should look interesting on the back of the 2d rake and a nice little van project after creating the TSO.

    20240309_101018.jpg.ca364a4e98feb8a7d758c2101b4164da.jpg20240309_101030.jpg.18753a8a20ea11725d5746bdd04b7376.jpg

The TPO is now in maroon with the last details to be painted  bogies are Bachmann with step boards added these will be painted and weathered soon.

    20240310_210953.jpg.71fe7d825e32356a9df4c03f36892ddf.jpg

The Met Cam FK has had an interior bodged together so now just awaiting lining and numbers and I'll add the silver window surrounds.

A Tri Ang CK has had the blue and grey treatment as well as all the usual mk1 mods, bogies moved, new buffers and end plate and a new roof rescued from a newer Hornby CK with correct vent placement.

    20240310_210401.jpg.561c5f286b11cd453b8c69cd76d78c7e.jpg

Booth Car coming on a treat, I was nervous tonight taking the masking tape off but it's come out very well, couple of bits to tidy up but I'm very happy. I have an interior pack ready to make up for it so that's tomorrow's job.

    20240310_210352.jpg.4d9545a1db9216dd1a439715fbb06e94.jpg

Finally the suburban lav comp is ready for transfers, I drilled out all the holes for the hinges and door stuff before painting... that was a bit tedious but well worth the effort.

Lining and some lettering just ordered from Fox this evening too, vest psych myself up for lining this lot now!

    Thanks for looking

  13. Evening all, pitifully slow progress at the mo, just a lot going on with other things other than trains.

However, I think I have finally got the Booth Car very close to primer today. I think I have got all the main bits of the underframe sorted now and the roof nearly done, the ribs are .4mm masking tape. 1st time ive tried it so interested to see how they look once primed. Window frames are self adhesive from Southern Pride, corridor side ones are bang on, the kitchen side ones the comet windows look to be slightly different to the SP stickers so iv adapted them a bit. The kitchen window I gave up with as the comet etches are a fair bit bigger than the SP stickers so let's see how it goes.

    20240225_220556.jpg.a26f3c7bf13a9f5ece5a2b693525d8ff.jpg20240225_220600.jpg.f9446dd65296bc7d1910b10217240f43.jpg20240225_220705.jpg.c5126dea005ca63391545e269b3a56ff.jpg

    20240225_220628.jpg.c042d2d68deb25c62a37a7cdae0f0188.jpg

The B5 sides are on the original comet bogies, frustratingly I drilled a bit too much on the backside to ease the bearing cups into thr sideframes but I think they'll be ok after painting.

Other things moving along too, the Gresley TPO I have decided to just do it maroon after a couple of very useful Ebay buys this weekend to go with it.

The Met Cam 1st is now maroon, justvawaiting a few details and lining.

    20240225_221723.jpg.0975abd4d038ecfd9b05932a51a61493.jpg

The Stanier CK is back and primed, a little more filler required before its going into blue and grey.

Lots to do and hopefully a steadier week ahead work wise.

    Cheers

Are you aware that the ferry vans were built with windows - in fact, apart from the ferry fittings, they were identical to the prototype CCT.

Their original livery was, again like the protype CCT, NPCCS crimson (blood) with straw yellow lettering.

The vans were rejected by H.M. Customs and Excise as being too insecure, due to the windows; so these were plated-over. Evidence of the welded-in plating could be detected throughout their lives.

    CJI.

Evening John, oh yes I know they had windows originally but then had them plated in, I prefer them in their later bauxite colours as well.

The couple I have seen in preservation look to be in early freight brown? So was it crimson then brown? Or is the preservation  brown spurious?

    Cheers

Thanks for the instructions/hints about correcting the ride height/spacing of Triang mk1 coach bogies.

Just purchased three more off eBay for my own use, although a book I picked up on Diesel Hydraulics in the West Country seem to show Warships with a minimum of 8 coaches behind, so I may end up adding them to the 6 coaches I’ve got for my mate already. As these are maroon livery, I really will have to master repairing into chocolate and cream!

Having taken my first Triang mk1 apart, I now see why the separate sides make them ideal “chop shop” fodder! As a matter of interest, how do you go about cutting them up? Razor saw or many passes with a modelling knife? Is masking tape a good idea?

Middle of Lidl the other week had “Japanese Saws”, which apparently cut in both directions (?) and I did wonder if they were fine enough for modelling work (as the packaging said they had more teeth than a normal saw) although I couldn’t tell how thick the blades were due to the packaging.

Delighted to find in my late dad’s library of reference books Keith Parkin’s “British Railways Mark 1 Coaches” and the “Supplementary Volume” - being stuck in bed has given me plenty of time to read it cover to cover. It’s fascinating how many variations of mk1 carriage were produced, and yet all using standard ‘panels’ had such a unity of design.

    HOURS OF FUN!

Hours of fun indeed! Parkin is the go to for things MK1, if you have a bit of spare cash the Longworth book is worth it too to add a bit of extra info, lots of lists etc.

Razor saws and sharp knives are ideal tools, my Dad made up a wooden former too to help keep things square and to length, I'll try get a pic when I'm up in the week.

    Cheers

  16. Evening all, not a lot happening with the booth car this week, still looking at underframe stuff and awaiting bogie side frames but I may tackle the roof after tea tonight.

    20240211_163236.jpg.76578c11a998ee977d29f2e6124dc057.jpg

This weekend I have been working on the Ferry CCT after the tie down loops arrived from Comet/Wizard so I could have a crack at getting it nearly done. Underframe gubbins done as per best guess from pics and steps added. Handrails added last night and roof vents also. A coat of primer was put this aft and I think it's about done. This one is heading over to Cumbria to a good a modelling mate of mine who has bashed the below for me from a Hornby LMS TPO

    Gresley dia 165 TPO:

    DSCF2106.JPG.17fb9f94c8220b4a7b958e00fe3848ce.JPGDSCF2105.JPG.c77140145f1f879b92011861c02a3fc7.JPG

    20240211_162800.jpg.c9233df5f254f79930c2622f8b8a09fd.jpg

As you can see a fair bit of work has gone into it so I'm pretty chuffed it's landed on my bench, in a nutshell, roof filed flat, the body and chassis cut down and filler section added to make it correct length, then doors cut outs and new doors added as well as god knows how much strip for the panelling.

Isinglass do a 3d printed kit for it but also sell the tranductor as a separate part so as set duly arrived this week, pleasantly surprised to find it's designed to be hinged so iv spent a big of time building it up and adding it to the model. Also a couple of other little bits added such as door hinges and step boards etc. A coat of primer this aft really shows the accuracy of the panelling and I cannot wait to get it painted, it will be blue and grey as E70299E as it still had most of the gear still attached.

Just need to work out what to run with it now! More research required with the LMS TPO coaches that came over to Eastern required.

The Met Cam mark 1 is has had a few coats of maroon too so is getting there too.

More soon, hopefully a quieter week work wise than last week.

    Cheers

Robert Carrol and 51A both have pictures of E1106, the RC one is good enough to transform to get underframe detail, ask him if I could upload my transformed copy if you want it

Thanks Martin, yeah any pics greatly received. Many thanks for the colour interior pics.

My Parkin is up at my Dads so will bob round and have a look to refresh myself.

  18. Evening all, not done a great deal for a couple of weeks after the last posts, I got a lot of stuff varnished up and rebuilt and sent back up to the layout and got some other bits down to my house to mess about with.

    20240204_213228.jpg.564b439a53764154356a648c078b8c04.jpg

Currently on the go is a the Met Cam prototype FK, Southern Pride sides mounted on an old mainline mk1. Extra gutter strips added and new shell vents added following a delivery of bits this week, door hinges added this weekend and holes drilled in prep for door furniture. Need another coat of primer now.

Also on the go is something a little bit special, this is what we think is the only Comet Diagram 32 Booth Car, the box is marked up as a demo build which i dont think ever went into production so this could be the only one. It has come to me via @Clive Mortimore and @Mallard60022 who got it from Geoff Brewin when he had Comet models.

    20240203_192814.jpg.09368fc1329e76f5acd89aa11a9d7973.jpg20240203_192807.jpg.f119691fde690921f60958be6f2345ec.jpg

It's been with me since summer last year, it had been partially built and had got a little bent I'm guessing in the post etc, I think it's been in the box a while as there is a very perished elastic band in there. I de soldered the sides from the ends and popped it away pending acquiring some extra bits for it although it came with all main components and hand written notes I had an idea so go the extra mile and get an interior etc.

Various bits have been sourced over the last few months, notable some self adhesive window frames from Southern Pride and an interior kit.

I set to this weekend cleaning up the brass and the ends and slowly straightened things up and started the rebuild, once the shell was solid I added all the usual end detail etc and made sure the roof sits nicely. Not having made a Comet kit in full before iv built the shell round the underframe and ends.

    20240203_192822.jpg.2d6bda7a84a76725eeeb39cb0e3df35e.jpg

Door hinges are from Southern Pride and the underframe gear on do far is a mix of Comet and Southern Pride, the kit didn't come with the catering etched bits like the refrigeration unit so I'll probably scratch/bodge build somethings that look right, coming along nicely.

    20240204_213132.jpg.b47b83972f38269ad61e0239a7a09434.jpg20240204_213156.jpg.72de55a59e754099000b987a218737fc.jpg

The bogies came already wheeledvand built but with BR1 side frames so I've ordered some B5 sideframes from Dart Castings, it's already weighing a fair bit so adding them on I doubt itl need extra weight in.

There doesn't seem to be too many pics out there of it but I have seen it got refurbished in around 1970 when an extra toilet window was put in on the corridor side, these etches look to be original format so was only in service 2 years as per my model. I think the Southern Pride etches portray the later side layout, if anyone has any pics of it I'd love to see them!

Thanks to Phil and Clive for allowing me to give it a home, can't wait yo get the interior in with the prototypes green tables!

    Cheers

Great to see all this stuff making progress. When modelling takes a back seat at your house your still doing a lot more than me at the moment. hopefully that should change soon.

Can i ask at about your extended Esso tank wagons, how are you cutting up the tanks to extend them? Is there a specific way of doing it to keep the bands etc in the right place or is it easier than that? Also,do you need to do anything to the chassis and under frame or do they stay as is?

    John

Cheers John, yeah seem to have a lot on go at the mo.. it's my Dads fault, he churns stuff out and sends it to me for finishing!

So for the tankers, I havnt a really good pic of what we did but off top of my head we used 2nd hand tankers mainly so if we had a pretty bad one we would use that barrel for the extensions, from memory it's 1cm to be extended so we cut 2 5mm slices from the donor barrel then added them in to the 'good' barrel just after the ring I think.

Hopefully the crop below from another pic you can just see where the cuts are?

    20230506_142400.jpg.b45e6dad5bc8a670e7e911fd408bb942.jpg.c040a62176b0f1e6f2ad3d296fc88d49.jpg

As for chassis we kept as standard, Eagle eyed people may spot some are made up the wrong way round but that is what we worked with. The etched walkways and ladders from RT Models are well worth it. I think the rake of 7 has cost us less than 40 quid all in all. Not including the amount of filler and new wheels haha!

  20. I'm sure I did a post just before Christmas but obviously not!

So anyway, happy new year all and hope everyone got through the trials and tribulations of the festive period unscathed?

Modelling wise took a slight back seat as we went away for new year but being back at work and the tedium of January starts to bite iv been ploughing on with the various projects trying to get things tidied up.

So, I suppose to sum things up, here is the batch of stuff now ready for a coat of varnish:

The 4 suburbans now all blue and lettered, yes I don't think a composite got into blue but it looks nice and the other side is just 2nd. The 2nd Lav just needs a bit more blue on the toilet vent but it just about done.

    20240107_212646.jpg.b90cd9d80eeec057f63fac622986a725.jpg20240107_212653.jpg.66da75d1b86e573aa811593d218b8cd8.jpg20240107_212707.jpg.1eaeeb12931ae98bad3e7b636ad4b18c.jpg

PoP Train ready for varnish then I can put the windows in and the roofs on etc and it's done.

    20240107_212551.jpg.b3b9ca0602e7a1b073b588347ca17370.jpg20240107_212627.jpg.1676e8a19f502700c2af0061460eb675.jpg

Esso class A tanks all lettered and dirtied as per the others to bolster the rake.

    20240107_212802.jpg.550ba6686f422f915646c93856ee52f8.jpg

Lima 50ft LMS BG new bogies and repaint into blue to go into the parcels rake (s)

    20240107_212719.jpg.d7f4680f22545d3bf2ab3159d7fdf5e4.jpg

Bulleid SK, mash up of the Southern Pride sides left over from the one I did with brass sides in maroon, we had a couple of SP clear sides which have been mated to a Hornby chassis with SP boxes etc, still on BR1s for now- door furniture put in today so ready to head back for Dad to number.

    20240107_212734.jpg.9aa6a173f16db1188f404154978ba690.jpg

Here is the list of stuff now in the 'painted, ready for transfers and chassis'

Thompson full brakes, the planked one is comet sides which I'd had for years on another chassis which got repurposed so the sides etc have been put on the remains of a tri ang southern bg with Thompson ends, not sure exactly where the roof cane from. Anyway it looks OK and worth the effort doing door bump stops etc this time around.

    20240107_212831.jpg.30ce6da62cb1fc75e0a7c1c4be0ebdaa.jpg20240107_212820.jpg.b6c9cbf7aa1576ff9c1f83048a146b11.jpg

The steel one is an amalgamation of bits using up the box of BSK/BCK bodies I got last year, painted up in 'crimson' this may get changed.

    20240107_214557.jpg.9a9510810c96ae631a4f08827bf502d4.jpg

    20240107_214549.jpg.8c3b7b7abeba0d5e328f1a7d60ddad7e.jpg

Sk- again made up from bits of the BSK/BCK scrap heap, turned out pretty nicely.

BSK- best of the bodies so straight repaint

    20240107_212921.jpg.7eca2cadf4059a45c0919a174da63c1f.jpg

Now to the 'Nearly Started' job- I think these are High Peak ICI hopper kits, iv got enough bogies now so these are jumping up the queue, filler applied to the tops of the tubd to fill up any air bubbles, as you can see some of them were a bit rough, sanding and filing will have to be an outside job so could be a slow project with the weather but very much looking forward to cracking on.

    20240107_213021.jpg.677671d059a08806b495785aad885846.jpg

Other bits waiting in the wings-

Stanier SK porthole sides to mount to a Dapol donor to go into blue and grey.

Another suburban 2nd and another to do brass sides for a lav comp.

Thompson BZ chassis to be ordered from Comet as well, saves faffing about trying to make one!

Ferry CCT currently researching chassis stuff so this will probs get going again this week when I raid the wagon underframe bits box.

Plus plenty of other odds and sods sat in boxes to get finished.. I may even get back into detailing locos again this year as I don't think we have much room for more wagons/coaches!

    Cheers

Hi James, no plans to re-bogie, though if a 3D-printed option became available it may be tempting. To be honest, I've had these sat here for ages since I started removing the buffers and they are just gathering dust. Still waiting for someone to produce a rectangular buffer back-plate....

I'll keep my eyes out then, I think Shapeway do some but look rather expensive and not as good as the Stenson cast ones. If I find some ill let you know. As for buffer back plates, I just kept mine simple and re used the original buffers with other mods. By the time I'd done 2 curtain sided ones I wasn't bothered about buffers!

    Cheers
