  1. Yeah and I'd missed that and varnished it yesterday! Thing the blue may be coming out again soon. Thanks for the heads up chaps. James
  2. Cheers John and Bernard, iv either missed or not clocked that good shot of the blue solebar on 9135 so deffo sticking with blue with goo! Everything iv seen for 9128 is just mucky brown so ta for the info! Hopefully I'll get the transfers on tonight. All the best James
  3. Cheers Martyn, glad I found that pic to add that extra bit to the model and yeah I'm sure the Thompsons will have been about the same. Think I'll be bashing a couple of Thompsons into a buffet once iv cleared the Gresley off after seeing yours, not that I need any more catering cars! All the best James
  4. Super job Martyn, cracking model there, great addition to your fleet. All the best James
  5. Well it seems the jury is out but plan it to weather it down so blue or black it sort of becomes the sam mucky colour. Got a feeling they were painted blue or black depending on the day but I feel I'm edging towards black under the grime on the pics iv seen. Going for E1928E and I can't quite be certain....
  6. Quick update before I head off for the afternoon, all going well with the buffet, new trusses and buffer are all on and the first coat of black applied where needed. Also added the bogie footsteps too where they were needed. Transfers arrived this morning so final paint fettling before lining etc and weathering down. Really enjoyed this little project.
  7. Evening all, update on the buffet. The rail grey is now applied and iv worked on the interior today. I found a pic of the counter as it was in late BR days from the NNR conversion back to original state of E1928E which weirdly is the number I'm aiming this model on. I knocked up the counter/serving area this afternoon and painted it a bit to look like varnished wood. Also back in are the seats that I had plus a home made replacement. Tables will go back in after I glaze it. Next up is the rail blue and I best order some buffet transfers too. Hopefully the MJT bits will arrive this week as well. Cheers James
  8. Morning Jon, the Kirk buffer is moving on, hoped the new trussing and buffers would have arrived by now so I can get on with painting but such is life. Like you say it was just buffets and sleepers that made it into blue and grey i think, I did pick up a Kirk sleeper 1st part finished for a 5er at Wakefield last week so that will be up next, will have to order more buffers and trussing. May do one of the shorty sleepers in maroon to bolster the mk1 rakes.. I think a whole excursion set teaked up would sit well as layout coaches for you, such a pity these coaches are pretty wrong everywhere to bash into other stuff! James
  9. Cheers Clive, ah so that explains the joggle. I assumed it may have been for air as it looks a bit of an after thought! Ta for info James
  10. Evening all, tonight's update on the buffet- The filler etc was given a blow over last night to check for flatness and all seemed well so tonight I sanded I back and added the beading on the buffet side and the windowsill to the small window. Other little jobs such as re attaching the corridor connections and footsteps also completed. Final task for tonight was to add the pipe that ran down the sole bar on this side air pipe? No sign of the buffers and trusses yet and another post strike tomorrow means work may slow up a tad but still got some bits I can do on it like rebuild the interior. Cheers James
  11. Evening Jon, glad to see a new post. Them short Gresleys look to scrub up a treat with a bit of work, I'm just about to get shot of a load I bought to knock into a buffet but tempted to keep a couple back now! All the best James
  12. Evening all, had a trip to the Wakefield show at the weekend to pick up some supplies to progress the buffet. It seems my usual go to modelstrip is no longer available so I got some Deluxe materials strip magic and gave it ago tonight. Quite impressed at how quick it works and with just 2 applications iv got the buffet body pretty well stripped. I'm sure without the panelling one application would have done but there are a lot of nooks and crannies. The roof has had some holes filled and new vents added, need to rig up the emergency brake tell tale and some vents on the ends but coming on now. I'll fetch some primer tomorrow and give it a once over. I have some buffers and trussing on order from Dart Castings. I picked up a couple more Kirk Gresley kits for a 5er each at the show so expect another Gresley to appear soon that will end up blue and grey. Cheers James
  13. Oh yes Leopard extremely useful.and what im basing mine on (should have credited that blog!) Iv had these bookmarked/scree shotted for a very long time. I'm sure there was a thread on here too for Porthcullin. If I can get mine somewhere close to his ill be very pleased. Cheers James
  14. Could have been a fair few places, lots of hotels that got requisitioned In the war and were still govt for a while after. Convention centre is an 80s thing I think, before that conferences were in hotels etc. Interesting the LNER Ash trays, I wonder if it was in the old North Easter railway Hotel in the centre of town. Cheers James
  15. I'm pretty sure it's a Kirk kit John, the interior bits certainly look like the ones included in a tourist stock buffet I built years ago that's now no longer. Interesting they were on the Liverpool Newcastle runs as that fits very nicely on my layout based on the old Harrogate-Ripon line as if it wasn't closed in 67. Cheers James
  16. A couple from my Dad who was out to see these two on RHTT in Harrogate yesterday. I forgot it was running! Makes a change from the usual diet of 66's on these things James
  17. Bit of an update as to the next project, I had a plan to do a Gresley buffet out of shorty Hornby coaches like Clive Mortimer has done so have built up a bit of a stock of them to chop up. I went up to the layout for butchery to begin and then remembered I had picked up a Gresley 'Dining Car' a few years back from a toy fair or exhibition which has been in a box pending repairs/fettling. Lo and behold it is actually a buffet car so all them Hornby Gresleys are getting sold back on! Work began by chopping out the section behind the buffet counter to better represent the coach after the BR rebuild as this will end up blue and grey. A plasticard panel was just and fettled to go back in the holes and left to harden off whilst I attended to other bits of the body that was a bit bent and battered. The roof has been filed smooth ready for new vents to be added. Lots still to do, next up will be the beading on the new panels and stripping the maroon paint of and rebuilding the underfloor details. Was good to ne back up at the layout for an afternoon, been a long while since I was playing trains, 9 coach 2d rake may be a tad overkill though but the homemade RBR sits very well in the rake Should be more updates next week, football watching day today Cheers James
  18. Thanks for sharing, interesting you mention a site in Harrogate, any idea where that was? Not sure iv heard of a sight up here. Cheers James
  19. Wow, been a little while longer than I thought posting here but I suppose it shows I havnt got much done through August! Some things have happened though, I got the bogies for the Rmb and BFK sorted and them two are now done and on the layout, yes I know I'm missing a gas box from the rmb but I'll add one another day! The CK now has buffers and footboards so that's all sorted too. The 2D RB got painted and iv been waiting ages for lining but got hold of some this week so spent this evening doing that. Just needs a but of weathering on the roof and it's chassis painting and it's about ready to go into the 2d rake. I have a TSO and an FO to finish lining too so the end is nigh for the current crop of carriages thankfully! Looking forward to doing a kit or loco soon now the nights are closing in. More updates soon hopefully James
  20. Cant go wrong with them 59/66 bogies, at one point they were about 9 quid! Glad the tip has paid dividends, reminds me ill have to have a look and see if anything is new in at Lendons. All the best James
  21. One big upgrade would be upgrading the motor bogie to a newer railroad one. Lendons of Cardiff have some cheap 66/59 power bogies, quite an easy job to slice off the side frames and stick on the 31 frames and build a plasticard cradle for the bogie to hang from. Iv gone through all my Lima stuff and done the same, makes a world of difference not having the pancake whine!
  22. No 2 Deffo looks best to me Jon Great idea, iv been eying up a spare bit of ply sheet at a mates I'm decorating to have my own little diorama plank at my house. Cheers James
  23. 364 really looking the part Martyn, is that also a railtech 3d EE builders plate on the cabside? Will be doing the same mods on my RR 40 soon, rounding off the nose makes such a difference. All the best James
  24. Oh wow that really brings it to life Jon, he best get his head in before heading down New Park tunnel or it won't just be his legs he's missing! I'll be finally building mine soon now the nights are drawing in a bit, definitely much more like modelling weather now. Great work as ever, looking forward to seeing your latest 'teaking' job. All the best James
  25. Ha nice! Didn't know the grave diggers privy was up there, not sure if it is. Last time I was up there was during lockdown in the snow taking some pics with a friend as the sun went down, got a little spooky... Well I thought they were all from the same tooling too but it seems there is differences somewhere with the thickness of the plastic but not sure if it's airfix, mainline, Dapol or Hornby where the difference comes in, all mine were bought sans box. It's not a huge issue but just something we found that could catch others out doing same trick
