  1. I think I remember a case like that in the late sixties, maybe early seventies of a driver being killed leaning out trying to spy on a 'courting couple'.
  2. Not really written, but I remember a radio commentator on the BBC in his hurry to introduce us to the highlights of an upcoming sports programme referred to the Euro-Nations Cup as the Urination Cup, or at least that's how it sounded.
  3. One I saw back in the eighties, though I think it existed only briefly was at King's Cross on the departure board no less. When they had the older ones when the letters flipped over each other there was always one at the end that had n't worked for ages. One day when I turned up , Lo and behold! it was working and there was my train to Huntingdon/Peterborough stopping at Stephenage .

I always found it amusing when I was younger in the sixties that the Clyde Coast trains from St.Enoch had MkI non corridor compartment coaches with no toilets for a journey of say an hour and a quarter to Largs where we often visited. Whereas if we went to Queen St. the train to Edinburgh was not only an early DMU with toilets but also had coffee/tea served at seat by a waiter in white jacket for 45 minute journey. It seemed that the prestigiousness of the route/clientele also figured in the authorities minds when it came to on train catering.
  5. My understanding of it was that in the early days of railways, the rich people travelled first class, their servants etc. second class and the common people third class. This continued for some time until the turn of the century/first world era when servants disappeared fairly rapidly with the changes in society. So the railways finding their was no great demand for this intermediate class meant to be used by the servants, abolished second class.

With regards the different classes, my understanding was that the well to do were in first class and their servants, maids etc accompanied them in second class with the masses travelling in third class. With the changes in society from the Victorian age into the twentieth century and the fairly sharp decline of sevants, maids etc the need for second class diminished quite rapidly and so was abolished , I may be wrong though.

Ok, since I remember they used to operate under the wires in the Glasgow area, so I take it there must've been a bit more restricted clearance in some parts of WCML south of Crewe or possibly certain classes of locos , I would imagine mainly express locos. Steam locos under wires on Gourock/Wemyss Bay line and north Clydeside, but I suppose mainly mixed traffic 4mt's with lower chimneys etc.
  8. In the film Jack Warner was driving a GWR Hall class locomotive. It was called Evening Hall. (Old joke for which I claim no originality).
  9. Re; SIGNAL ENGINEER and the tale of cars following other vehicles for guidance , the tramcars in Glasgow in the pea-soupers of the 1950's were popular vehicles for motorists to follow. My uncle would always tell the tale of the driver of one of those little blue 3 wheel invalid cars of the time, who got his front wheel caught in the tram line of a tramcar he was following. He kept going realising that this was actually no bad thing considering the conditions and all went well making progress through the south of the city , until the tram abruptly veered left into Larkfield depot with the 3 wheeler following it at speed.

On looking at larger diagram , yes I think I can see what you mean, but have to study it again tomorrow when more awake ,off to bed now.   12. Re; Manchester Exchange photo, are my eyes deceiving me or is that a double slip to the right of the engine. While I can see the need for changing from one track to the other for three of them, what is the need for the slip rails nearest to the engine, to change back onto the track leading back to the track it's just left, or are my eyes and brain just getting a bit befuddled as I get older.

Just my personal take on this, Triang train set as 5 year old, interest over the years, built Airfix signal box , footbridge etc even as a 7 year old, bought bits and pieces through married life, made usual Superquick and Airfix kits etc for various attempts at makeshift layouts over the years, through house moves divorce etc, now in 60's and still working but eventually built permanent set up in study. Built up stud of locos and stock for period I wanted, also during that period various purchases for 'train set' from family for Xmas , birthday etc. Weathering and renumbering of locos and stock and fitting of DCC to locos, as well as little bit of kit and scratch building so I think can class myself as railway modeller, surely. Point is, having completed (as far as I'm going ) with layout and amassed a good amount of stock, and reading this site almost daily, I have n't actually bought anything for a couple of years now. So while I and many can be classed as railway modellers by whatever criteria you go with, surely the question is how many of us are actually regularly buying stuff. This is real question I think is at the heart of the matter of this subject. I went through period of regularly treating myself at Xmas with new purchase and if I saw something that seemed suitable period for layout, but I think turning point came when I tried to programme new loco for layout on DCC controller and found it did n't work, I then realised I was at my limit of 40 locos. Then when I counted coaches found it was almost 3 figures. Life for various reasons busier now than a few years ago with grown up children and grand children and I have n't run anything on layout for about 18 months now and I don't know when next I think I would feel like buying something. So yes, railway modeller but not a purchaser these days. Wonder if anyone else can identify with this.

I remember hearing that on one of the record breaking hot summer days last summer that a crew on the last trip of the day on a steam loco on the Nene Valley Railway at Peterborough were unable to continue due to dehydration and another crew had to be summoned to take the train back on the final trip to Wansford.

  18. Just been observing this thread for a few days now and seeing people debating about wall hanging , makes me ask is it really necessary to hang them from wall. I've got 3 of these cases which I'm very pleased with and simply have them on the floor against the wall in my railway room (study). I find it handy to place models on the top of the display case there for a moment when I change over engines , stock etc. Is it the difference due to some people wanting to store/display models for running and others more interested in the display only aspect. BTW visitors who've been impressed with my collection have never found any difficulty admiring models in the cases on the floor.
  19. Back on topic, I saw Tornado running this afternoon over the Ham Lane crossing at Ferry Meadows Country Park. The Nene Valley Railway also has Flying Scotsman there this weekend, and according to their website is completely sold out. They were even warning over resale of tickets and ticket-touts, so looks like it'll be very popular.

While on the 11.50 service from Peterborough to Ipswich yesterday Easter Sunday,waiting for it to depart from Peterborough I spotted an empty brand new GWR train going southwards stop at a signal then depart again. Had pantographs but these seemed to be lowered. Must be one's you're referring to.
  21. Not really a bang, but just shattered into hundreds (not exaggerating) of pieces like safety glass. As you said, probably just a rogue piece of glass.
