The top lines are the passenger, this will be at a higher level, the track plan is similar to Shaw, it will be a single arriving and double departing (from left to right) with a reversing siding available for turn backs.

The bottom lines are the truncated remains of a once through line, freights will arrive from the left and the loco will run off and "run round" them, they then depart, this means that a freight will need to be only a few wagons long.

The juxaposition will be arranged during designing and the p&c may change, it will not be two parallel "areas" as drawn, there will probably be a closed up tunnel where the low level lines once continued and the passenger line will be on a gentle curve - but more of that as it progresses

The top level is now based on a Notts area station , the reversing siding now comes off the single bit, and the low level goods is a truncated double junction, one or more of the lines will be out of use, yet to decide which and as previously, juxtaposition will be sorted once the final track plan is decided upon.

    ------------

the top level is under "deep thought" about some variations, the siding will have a sand drag, we are thinking of limiting the fiddle yard so 158s will terminate but 142s can continue, therefore making any 158 service a forced turn back, and there is the possibility of the odd tamper / short freight, some possibilities for lighting, of a variety of types.

The low level will certainly be decayed, at least one of the lines will be out of use with the S&C partially dismantled, plenty of derelict stuff, not truly the "modern" railway but would allow RichardS' grids to put in a turn, the proposed signal box (closed) will be interesting but you will have to wait for that, thinking of making the ground frame (which has replaced the box) actually have moving levers but this will depend on what is needed.

The ideas are being templotted, so a more definite plan will start taking shape soon - then decision time, 00, EM or P4

    ---------------

Black lines are the nominal passenger only (high level) and blue the freight only - some of the lines will be out of use but still considering which ones. The passenger station will be to the right and will be "bitsa" - ie only enough platform for a vehicle or so, not sure how to hide the fiddle area there yet, probably a view blocker rather than a tunnel arrangement.

This started out as Spawd Bone Lane on RMW3, now will be an occasional thoughts on working with prototype locations to make them suitable for modelling...

    SPAWD BONE LANE
From the middle English ???spaldbone??™ ??“ shoulder bone ??“ a name suggested by the contours of the lane. Spawd Bone Lane was originally the southern boundary of the early field system and following the extension of the South Field became a headland lying within that field.

    from http://www.knottingley.org/history/spencer/knottingley-place-names13.htm

Knottingley East - a simple but interesting prototype.
The track plan is very simple consisting of 3 points and a trap there is a portacabin which supervises the level crossing but requires a release from Ferrybridge Power box before the gates can be opened.

The chord is bi-directional, the down main is signalled for wrong line moves but I have never seen one.

To the left, off the area under consideration, local services terminate and shunt forward, on the up line towards the signal to the right, on the prototype there is just enough room for a 4 vehicle unit, 2 X 158s maximum, they then reverse and head back to form the next service, this can be either using the chord (there are connections off scene) or the down main line. Coal trains (loaded and empty) pass through on the main lines and also use the chord in both directions.
My thoughts for this plan are to assume there is a cross country type passenger service on the main lines, a further infrequent local one on the chord and use a bigger variety of freight, the terminating locals will still be shunting around.

Some recent photos of the area.

A 144 reverses as described, the whippets live behind the hedge to the left.

A further reversal, looking the opposite way, showing the units using the chord.

    And again

The Shanks 66522 passes on the "mini haul" - Petroleum coke in HIAs (empty in this direction) - as a unit awaits a clear road.

And 66625 brings a loaded "mini" off the chord.

Another prototype location, this time more complicated than the last, although there are only 2 running lines. One long siding, 3 loops and a pair of lines off to a colliery add to the interest

This is Sudforth Lane - some shots

The proposed modelled area is as below.

A simplified version of Sudforth Lane which retains the overall "feel" but means it fits in less space.

As some may have noticed from my status updates I've been a bit under the weather this week so had an easy time whilst up at the facility and snapped a few photos of some 66s

Note the DBS and the Bardon were undergoing running in without a decoder fitted so the lights are not correctly displayed at all times, I eventually switched off the tail lights when I remembered

and whilst doing this I was testing the Grand Central HST

A pleasant few hours was spent at the cabin yesterday, in the company of some guests ( = friends) from the Merseyside club.

We are frequently in the cabin so anyone is welcome, by prior arrangement just in case we are out and about.

After the guys had left I snapped a couple of photos of the REX Fastline 66/3s (and a car train which was passing, again taken with the cheap snappy so no real depth of field but still give the ideas for some interesting possible shots.

No details have been added to the 66/3s yet - they have been fully tested before the knife comes out. Next weekend I will be adding the buffer beam details and then we will be sorting out (thanks to Big Jim and Pete Harvey) the depot transfers but more of that in the future.

    Called on into the bay

An unusual visitor to the scrap yard !

The signalbox cat watches the 66/3 trundle past - he's going to be annoyed when he realises the box has been abolished and there won't be anymore food for him !

The box had a panel fitted many years ago and so the run outs have all been removed (honest guvnor)

Hot air balloons are handy for those hard to reach shots.

Like buses - you wait for ages and then two turn up.

With a bit of photoshopping to add a background (and a level camera !) one for the real / model thread maybe.

Another view I quite like, multiple focus points combined to give a good depth of field would make this a good view (in my opinion)

    and this maybe

    and this

    Flashback to pre DRS days.

Of course Buddy wanted to help ...

Some snappy shots of Widnes taken during testing of the layout.

This is a "test" blog, once I get a grip on them I will use this to summarise what I'm up to on Widnes.

    Yes I know - BUFFER !!!!!

60021 shut down during a possession on Widnes.

    Here's a 66/7 thats heading for 66723 ...

    And an overview during testing.
