  1. The GPS25 and Gloucs Mk2 bogies look really good - I think the GPS25s or one of the similar design were fitted to the final batch of GMWA Binliner containers but they were replaced with one of the Y33? design of bogies in the early 2000s IIRC mainly due to maintainence and spares issues and the desire to use more standard bogies. I will see if there is anyway I can get some photos of the door ends as I pass Pendleton refuse terminal everyday but rarely does my train crawl past. Viridor also has a large fleet of internal and road only containers that use different number series from the rail fleet. Cheers Paul
  2. Yes looking good. I have sent you a PM with some more details. It seems that the containers numbered below 800 do not have the additional crossbracing at the non-door end whereas those above 800 do have. The original plain sided containers go upto about 300 I think. Cheers Paul
  3. Hi Wild Boar Fell, the JNAs look very nice indeed I would be tempted by some of those. From my notes and photos I have seen these JNAs GERS 44xx wagons in traffic from 2009 to present operating out of Peak Forest in mixed rakes of JNA VTG 98xx and the Tiphook/GE RIV registered JRAs in the 6790 series. As for the Manchester binliner containers these are something I have wanted to do for a long time. I did approach GMWA some years ago to ask if it was possible to obtain some drawings for the two container designs with a view to scratchbuilding the containers but it came to nothing in the end. I have some photos of the containers taken from the lineside or stations mainly side on views, which I would be happy to make available plus some top views and some end views. I have never seen the inner door end as the containers are usually loaded with them facing inwards. I was thinking of using the Hornby KFA models as they are very similar and with a few minor tweeks and a good coat of grime they will do for me even though they are not exactly the same as the GMWA/Viridor KFAs. A few of my photos on my Flickr page that used to be on my old wagon website: Original design of container with shallow ribbing http://flic.kr/p/aDChMS Later design of container with heavy ribbing http://flic.kr/p/aDChLQ http://flic.kr/p/aDChL7 Regards Paul
  4. If its 1987 you have chosen to model then you would just about be able to use 27ton tippler opens, 21ton welded hoppers, BR/PO Presflows in block formations with 45/0s or 47s would be possible. The yard could be used to load small trainloads of local traffic like limestone or aggregates using an excavator/shovel loader directly into open box wagons like POAs. Cheers Paul
  5. Hi Cav, looks like a brilliant idea for a layout. I am doing a 4mm layout set around Hindlow and Dowlow in the 1989-91 late Speedlink period and am slowly building my layout. Stockwise you could look to recreate a Peak Forest - Washwood Heath or Ely service using a pair of Buxton 37/5s with a rake of the N Gauge Society RMC hopper kits. To make the second slab sided design you would need to scratchbuild these to add a bit of variety. You could also throw in some of the Tiphook PIA/KPA bogie hoppers in the original white and blue livery using the Farish autoballaster wagons suitably backdated and modified. The main Farish RMC/BLI/Tilcon/Tarmac hoppers came later on after 1994 so are too late for the time period as nice as they are. A Farish class 60 in Construction or Coal sector could be used to represent the first few members of the class allocated to Buxton for stone duties. Cement PCAs of the Vee and recent Metalair types could be used with say pairs of blue or Railfreight 20s, 31s or 37s or a single 47. General Speedlink era stock using opens and vans could be used along with some suitable stone or bulk powder wagons. The Peakstone and Tarmac PGAs could be used as a joint rake but you would need to scratchbuild the hoppers and use Farish chassis as appropriate. Other private owner wagons would also need to be scratchbuilt. A rake of MGR wagons could make up a loaded coal train running to say Fiddler's Ferry power station from the Nottingham coalfield. Passenger stock could be class 142 and 150/1 DMUs on local services with class 156 on longer distance services like Liverpool - East Anglia that had taken over from the last of the loco hauled services in 1988. Prior to that an 47/4 on air-con Mark 2d-fs would be appropriate or even a 37/4 on air-con Mark 2b/cs. A few ideas that might just help you I hope! Cheers Paul
  6. Hi Christian, I visited Oakleigh sidings a number of times in 1998 and a few times thereafter and somewhere in my collection there will be some photos. I did have the priviledge of being allowed into the yard by the groundstaff a few times to look at the wagons, which by that time were CAIB PGAs on the Tunstead limestone traffic and EWS MGR coal hoppers. The famous ICI bogie hopper wagons were by this time restricted to the works only beyond the bridge. I don't have a plan of the sidings but you can purchase one from this site - Old Maps http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html - enter Northwich in the search box or try the coordinates 365261, 373752 which will centre you on Oakleigh Sidings. Select the Post-WWII maps from the drop-down list on the right and you will get several 1:10, 000 and 1:10,560 scale maps but there is a good 1:2500 scale map dating from 1965-66. That should give you some idea of the sidings. You can purchase the map in different formats from and emailed PDF for £16 upto printed framed maps £50. I have no connection with Old Maps but I have used them to obtain maps of the quarry lines around Buxton that proved most useful in planning my layout. The local library in Northwich may well have copies of similar 1:2500 scale maps but IIRC you cannot obtain more than an A4 extract from any one map that is less than 50 years old so it would take a long time to get the full sidings. I am guessing that the need for an extended fiddle yard prompted the alterations to the layout that Martin had built by trains12/Peter Midwinter then?
  8. Remember the fun times Peter. I know I will and can think of a few of his little adventures when he got out of the garden and we had to go and search for him on the nearby hills oops!! R.I.P. Alfie Paul
  9. And GTD will feature in next months (Jan 2013) issue of Model Rail according to the feature on the inside back page of the current issue 176....
  10. Glen Gillie has made it across the hills from North Wales to Barrow Hill for Model Rail Live. Some minor damage to a pair of signals that can be glued back into position plus the garage scenic piece came adrift somewhere on the journey and no major damage so it has been glued back into place. And then the common return wire between two boards has come loose but this has been solved by bridging the boards with crocodile clips as a temporary fix until we can have a proper look the wires. We look forward to seeing you over the weekend. Cheers Peter & Paul
  11. It's coming on nicely Peter, I will see the new boards at weekend I hope. Cheers Paul
  12. 36 ft ouch my poor back lol . The scenery will flow better with the extentions I agree but for some exhibitions it might be beyond the limit sizewise. I will have a look at the progress when I come and visit in early September hopefully. Cheers Paul
  13. It was a good weekend helping Peter, Jamie and Richard. I didn't operate on Glen Gillie and so spent the weekend operating Dartmouth for Kingswear with Richard. Cheers Paul
  14. When the Hazel Grove Chord scheme was being considered back in the early 1980, I am told that BR did look into the possibility of closing what is now the freight-only single line from Hazel Grove (High Level Jnc.) down to Northenden and instead bring all of the freight down the new single track chord through Hazel Grove and Davenport and then take the re-instated line from Davenport Jnc. (aka The Khyber) up and across the main Crewe/Stoke lines and then join the then mainly freight-only line from Edgeley to Northenden Jnc as mentioned. I am not certain what the deciding factor was against doing this, obviously the bridge over the Crewe/Stoke lines would need to be replaced plus either a level crossing or a brand new bridge to replace the former Adswood Road 'Bakery Bridge' plus alterations to create the new junctions at each end and associated signalling changes. I would guess that somewhere a loop or loops would need to be provided to recess the freight trains to allow the passenger services to take priority. The obvious place for this would have been the re-instatement of Woodsmoor loops that started at Hazel Grove. So a lot of things to consider and maybe this influenced the decision to design the chord and keeping the line from Hazel Grove to Northenden in with a reduction to single line. Add to that the loop provided at Hazel Grove High Level on the site of the former Midland station and this allowed down freight trains to be recessed out of the way of the passengers to await an up freight to come up from Northenden and thus clear the section. In fact you can send an Up train from Northenden and once it was at Hazel Grove end then Northenden could send another behind it to wait at the first Hazel Grove signal on the single line section. I will ask a member of my model railway club Trevor Moseley as he was involved with the chord scheme and might be able to fill in the gaps. As for the hoppers they were on rare occasions routed loaded down and empties up the chord and from memory of seeing them passing the car park on Sunday car boot days (no photos damm!) they were always just double headed Buxton 37/5s as usual. Nowadays there isn't much freight on the Hazel Grove to Northenden line the main ones being the Northwich hoppers, Dowlow enterprise and occasional freight flows like the Northenden stone. Cheers Paul
  15. The stone terminal is located behind what used to be Quaffers nightclub and the DIY store. If you go round the back of the DIY store you can see the buffer stops and further up the line the unloading shed. Cheers Paul

  17. Nice to see 60024 pass through Hazel Grove this evening on the return Ashburys to Dowlow empty JRA boxes, not much noise going up the bank to Disley as he was following the Buxton passenger train up. Cheers Paul
  18. Very nice looking kits. Who are these made by?
  19. Looking good Chris. The JMAs is one of those wagons I'd love to model sometime having seen them operating out of Peak Forest area over the past few years. The JMAs seem to have all but gone now and only the rebogied HKAs seem to be used now from Dowlow quarry. Cheers Paul

  21. Those buildings are coming along nicely. Are they based on a real distillery or from photos in books? Cheers Paul
  22. Hi Peter, looking forward to seeing this layout soon. How did you go about researching the buildings for the new extention that you are planning/building to represent the china clays dries at the other end of the branch? Cheers Paul
  23. How is the new revised control panel coming on with the new twiddly selector knobs!? It will solve a lot of the problems in the fiddle yard now and make things easier to control hopefully. Cheers Paul
  24. Its all coming on well Peter. I hope to see the layout again soon when I next visit. Cheers Paul
  25. Good to see the extension piece being added onto the layout. That will make the shunt move on the lower yard much easier once its done. Cheers Paul
