Were any of those 3 built by Pressed Steel? The Ashford D plates have the number prefixed with GB78xxxx rather than the usual Bxxxxxx, and I wondered what the PS ones have?

    Thanks

    Jon,

this has been weld repaired at some point in the past. And this one has a higher tonnage than the Pressed steel version below.

this is a favourite one of mine  as its the van Hornby made it the state it was in, whilst it was in the yard.

So what you are saying is that although they were craned off the network in 2018, the actually spent a decade abandoned in a siding and therefore would not have been part of any train post 2008 (probably earlier).  I'm just interested in their end of life usage.

More like almost 25 years ! The three that were left at Peterborough and removed in 2018 were dumped in various parts of the yard since around 1995!
in this Roy Harrison video, you can catch glimpses of them at around the 14:40 mark in Spital yard, this where the GTR sidings are now.

what was interesting is that each had a different livery. One was original Brown, one Railfreight red/grey and one dutch.

Fear a knock on the door!

    Mike.

They were given to me by the scrap company. As the signalman on duty that day,  DB turned up with a 66 from Toton and shunted them (along with a bream wagon, an OCA and a wooden vanfit) onto the siding closest to the A15. The scrap man turned up in a pair of vans and set their cutting gear up and we were all awaiting the trucks with the Hiab cranes on. As they were to be chopped and loaded into the trucks. They never showed so the 66 was instructed to put them back. But before doing so the chap from the scrap company, It may have been Sims metals, although i cant be sure, cut through the bolts holding the D plates on. He gave them to us but as No one else was interested they gave them all to me and they’ve been on my wall ever since. That was in 2008.

It is pleasing to know they have been preserved as i saw them being craned away a few years ago.

The final ferry vans were literally removed from the national network in 2018 when three ex-Fastline ferry vans had to be craned out of Peterborough yard to be taken away by road. Surviving ferry vans can be found at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Peak Rail and at the Eden Valley, Spa Valley and West Somerset Railways.

i worked in the west yard at Peterborough yard for years and i may know where the D plates are from the three vans that were in the yard!

It was done an awful long time ago and its been in the loft for 20 years so its distinctly battered, just look at the soldering! but here it is.  I have owned it for 53years or so from brand new.  There are  flats on the shafts, it uses the original plate springs, tread is black ship rigging and green Meccano.  AFAIK. these are loco gears. If I did it again I think I would use gears with spokes from clocks.DSCN6967.JPG.f00abbcf43c78f07297ca450e6db2081.JPG

Thank you very much for that. If i did that to mine it would put it back into gauge for the main layout!

I'm going to look into this and may revisit the crane later and make this adjustment.

thanks for the pics i appreciate it.

Crane looks great except those massive sticking out handles.  I replaced mine with clock gears so you can still play with it and lift things with it but it round nicely on scale track spacing instead of catching on stuff going the other way.

any chance of a picture. i was tempted to do this but i couldn't find any reference to how its done.

  8. I lost all patience with the decoder itself as I adjusted all CV's as per Hornby's own tech guys said etc and still it wouldn't run properly but sound was fine.

    my solution was this.

I inserted a Bachmann 36-566 decoder and tested the loco. everything was fine. perfect running.

after testing I unsoldered the red and black wires from the TTS plug and then wrapped the plug in insulation tape to prevent the pins staying and causing a short.

then I carefully soldered the red and black wires from the TTS Plug to the corresponding red/black wire on the 36-566 plug.

Unconventional, yes! does it now work, yes! however you now have to properly drive the 31, to make the sounds match the speeds. as the Bachmann chip controls the motor not the TTS chip.

so the 31 in essence has two decoders fitted. the Bachmann 36-566 controls the motor and lights with the TTS one providing the sounds. This is still cheaper than buying a high end sound chip although it is galling as Hornby should make the TTS chips better to suit their own locos!!

i am happy now though and both sound 31's run and sound good.

No; it's still full of beans.

The topic is still relevant and I've got several shops wondering why they've not received their catalogues now.

if they are with holding catalogues from shops maybe the one i got from Tesco will be a collectors item with the trains on film pages in it? :yahoo:

Should also be noted that the Hornby 2022 announcement video on YouTube has also seen all traces of 'Trains On Film' removed.

interestingly it is still in the Hornby magazine coverage video though. i'd have though Hornby would want that edited out too!

  11. erm.

unless I'm mistaken, the trains on film range seems to have been removed from Hornby's website!

I wish I'd put money on it now,  i said this would happen a few pages back.

what a stunt to pull.  I'm sorry but whoever's idea it was to launch that range should be shown the door.

do Hornby really need that bad publicity?

  12. I need some help from the DCC guys.

I have a. 31 that is TTS sound, and it ran perfectly when installed a couple of months ago. Now all of a sudden its stop start all the time. I have stripped the bogies and drive train and removed any hardened grease. So everything is free to roll, its not a power issue as everything else runs fine and the sound doesnt cut out. Any help would be great.

i video of it running is here

But we are back into speculation of the precise details. You can't do a circular space 'falcon' inspired by Star Wars because the IP that arises from that was created by Star Wars, it did not exist prior to Star Wars. It is in simple terms 100% Star Wars. Similarly TTTE where the locos are clearly new and novel IP even if loosely based on real rolling stock.

The locos and rolling stock in Titfield Thunderbolt are not 100% new and novel and existed independently of the film.

To quote your opening paragraph, that's where the 'inspired' wording comes in. No the Falcon did not exist before Star wars, but what I'm saying is no one can make a look-a-like and say its 'inspired' by Star wars. it would be a clear breach of copyright and IP. Same with releasing Lion as Thunderbolt as it was ONLY Thunderbolt in the film.

and to say that the rolling stock in Titfield Thunderbolt are not 100% new is slightly incorrect. Before the film there was never a Loriot Y with a coach body on in use on a railway, it was only in the film. As mentioned before this design of wagon could be seen as IP rights to Studio Canal.

  14. I think Hornby are playing a dangerous game. With their well publicised financial difficulties of recent years looking to be behind them, pulling a stunt like this may cost them dearly, both monetary and otherwise.

I do not buy for a moment that they can get around copyright by slapping 'inspired by' on the box, otherwise they would have a blue Anthropomorphic steam loco in the range 'inspired by classic children tales'.  Mattel and Bachmann would not stand for it.

The railway children set clearly shows the Studio Canal branding. Could Studio Canal cancel this contract if Hornby are found to be at fault? The other sets  do not have the branding yet show pictures from the film, and have the title across the packaging.

Speaking to a legal friend of mine, they have said copyright cannot be bypassed by saying it is 'inspired by' otherwise there would be representations of all sorts for sale.  For example Lego have the Star Wars rights, so Playmobil, for example,  cannot release a circular space 'falcon' and say its inspired by Star wars. they would not get away with it.

The next few weeks/months will be interesting to see how it pans out, my money would go to Hornby quietly dropping the 'trains on film' range, it won't feature in next years catalogue and will remain a taboo subject that Hornby will conveniently  'forget'.

They (Hornby) do seem to be getting a reputation for throwing a wobbly at the smaller manufactures, and trouncing others announcements with their own, Cavalex 91 and Rapido Titifield being just two examples.

as they saying goes, those in higher places have further to fall!

I have locked all mine in place. They must be absolutely square to the chassis. Make sure you have good wheels and they are at 14.5btb. At least Romfords or the latest Hornby/Bachmann wheels.

Like this they are fine down to 2nd radius (Peco Double Slip).

Why not lock 2 or 3 up with Blutac and test.

    Dave.

Yes all will have new metal Hornby wheel sets. Good idea with the blue tak. i'll try that first. thanks

  16. Hello

i have a rake of 12 Hornby VIX ferry vans of varying ages. They are a nightmare on double slips and crossovers because the wheels are able to rotate they tend to travel and derail. back to backs are correct.

i am considering fixing the axels in place, my question is will this effect the running capabilities on curves if a wagon as long as a ferry van has fixed axels, and more the point, when the full rake of 12 are running together.

    regards
