  2. At 05.45 local time, on Monday 16 July, 75 years ago, "the gadget" was tested near Alamogordo, New Mexico and the world was never the same again. Niels Bohr said "Now there can be no more war", if only his words came true.

Oppenheimer could immediately see the threat posed by his new technology and famously used the quote, "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds".

We had the sense to pull back from Nuclear Armageddon but we don't seem to be able to act on the equally serious, insidious and creeping threat of ecological destruction.

DA BOMB! could never stop war, only attenuate it (it seems that, in this respect at least, Niels Bohr was a fool).

But for how long? It appears that cats, once out of the bag, have a strange reluctance to get back in.

  3. Why do some people feel the need to monopolise the "new items" feeds?

I mean that there is one certain person who seems to have taken it upon themselves to create a thread for every new item recently announced. Maybe it's been subcontracted out to her?!

I don't see it as a case of 'monopolising', rather than sharing information that's in the public domain but not reported before on RMweb. One or two people may be 'quicker on the draw', but it's open to anyone.

If any thread is a duplicate of a previous announcement, it should be merged or locked, so as to keep the discussion in one place. But that hasn't been (much of) a problem, has it?

      Thanks Truffy!

I guess it's not a problem, I just got mildly irritated by it but like you say, anyone can post if they choose.

      Thanks for responding.

      Cheers,

      John

  4. I do find it remarkable that folk will brag about how cheap they bought something, then endlessly complain when it doesn't work properly.
