  1. Hi Keith,

    many thanks for your interest.

Yes, Tuesday and Thursday evenings 19.00 - 21.30 and Wednesday afternoons 14,00 - 16,30 are the Club times, but I would point out that Thursday 25th April is our AGM so best avoided.

    kind regards

    Mike Cole

  2. I noticed on the EWS version there is now what could be construed as a droplight in the centre window at the end, I wonder if they appear in other versions as well? End views have not been posted for all versions.

I did ask about it. There wasn't one on display. I was told they pretty much started the design from scratch all over again. They are expecting a new EP next month, then decorated samples in the summer. No prediction on when the model would be in the shops was given - I'm not surprised, & I didn't ask that question.

    So don't hold your breath....

I also asked the same question and received the same answer but I was also told that they were going to announce TWO new locomotives this summer!

  5. The first decorated examples are on the Rails and Tower websites today. Reading through the 'Specification' on the Rails site, they are being fitted with three link couplings! I will ponder the other details and see if and which way I might jump.

  6. I received mine last week but only just got round to playing with it, mainly due to the Club DCC layout being temporarily out of commission due to trackwork alterations. So mostly been on the rolling road and just sorted out the sound conundrum and the 'cyclic toggle'

When delivered it comes with ready to run on Peco radius two trackwork so there is a bit of work in putting in the 'scale' options pieces which I have now completed, making a really lovely model.

Here are some views of our Wirral Parkway layout to tempt you.

quite looks the business, the main 'error' is having the three end windows identical rather than the droplight in the ends to match the 'window/door/window' configuration that they have produced, bu.t a simple matter of adding the droplight later. The roof is held on by a series of magnets along the length of the body to allow population of the various areas. All in all looking very good.

    cheers

  11. As far as I am aware, EWS had two inspection saloons in their house colours, DM45029 (ex LMS Diag D2046) and DB999504 (BR Diag 1/550) I have built both in 7mm O Gauge and although the differences between the two are quite subtle there is a lot of cut and shuffle to get the BR version out of the ex LMS one, especially in brass, would not attempt doing it in plastic and OO Gauge especially with my eyes the way they are functioning these days.

  12. WARNING

Be extra careful when removing the cab roof - do not hold the roof on the sides as the top runner for the cabside shutters is immediately beneath the roof lip and it is very fragile - don't ask me how I know!!!! always remove the roof by holding the front and rear edges in the area where the magnets are located.

Re-fixing the runner will be an interesting task later which might end up with the shutter being permanently fixed in the open position.

  13. The re-numbering went well, the cabside plates came off without a fight, a scalpel blade under a corned was sufficient to break the bond, such that the plates have been put aside for possible future use. The smokebox number and shedplate are printed flat so nothing needed to be done in the way of preparation and the two numbers slid into position without any problems and the cabside plates fitted over the space just as easy.

  14. I have gone for the model of 4571, which I shall be re-numbering to 4570 St. Blazey 83E (RailTec transfers) as the font that Dapol/Lionheart have used is totally wrong for 4571

I have installed a Zimo MS440C decoder from YouChoos and must congratulate Dapol/Lionheart on making things a lot easier by having the speaker already installed and the fact that you do not need a 'stay alive'.

It will get a good run at the Club tonight.

  15. The motor/gearbox arrived from MSC at lunchtime, so I gave it a trial fit and thankfully all is well, even to being able to use the original cradle slots to span a bearer to support the new motor.

  16. progress from Friday afternoon in that the brake gear is on, just needs adjusting to equalise the spacing at the wheels.

I have filed the brake blocks down slightly and then added a facing of 20 thou plasticard to hopefully stop any shorting between brake block and wheel.

Back to the workbench on Monday, tomorrow is our will be our first visit to out eldest daughter's house in over two years thanks to Covid and other ailments, it is our granddaughter's 21st birthday.

  17. I could not resist one of the two un-started Vulcan kits offered on a certain website based in Skipton a couple of weeks ago and have made a start while I await a response from the Class 22 motor/gearbox supplier (now over a week since they signed for the parcel) and needless to say, things have not gone quite as smoothly as the instructions would lead you to believe!

The chassis is a 'fold down' chunky bass etch and once cleaned up, and with the fold lines skrawked, the basic shell was achieved without any fuss. The kit was originally supplied complete with wheels and motor and this version also had the wheels and motor but they differed from the original issue - similar but different. The step by step instructions are not amended from the original but have been amended an the last page without any cross reference. So the revised motor plate was chosen and the ends bent up 90 degrees as instructed and the updated motor (a Mashima 1833) was then dropped in again as instructed but unfortunately, it is nearly 3mm longer than the space between the folded up ends. I made the decision to abort the Mashima, break off the end plates and ordered an MSC SM1532 with a single reduction gearbox, this should be delivered today and we shall see how that fits.

    P1010971.JPG.bcf75ad258172fb902dec029bf8ca49d.JPG

left hand side showing the remains of the aborted motor plate on the far side.

    P1010972.JPG.271f910a1c6e82752f77102d96089ada.JPG

right hand side again showing the motor plate on the far side.

While waiting for the motor to arrive I have started looking at the brake gear which is all white metal. The holes on the brake hangers are ok to drill but the holes on the spigots on the cross beams are impossible to form. My solution (I hope that it is a solution) was to cut off the spigots and make a set of ferules to hold the 0.7mm wire pull rods. Fortunately, the spares box came up trumps in that I found a piece of brass tube with an ID just right for the wire. Then it was a question of some careful cutting of the tube to length - six pieces required, and see if things work out as planned

    P1010973.JPG.1c9ccf133bcc1e88303aed7f13c94d47.JPG

using one of the broken off end plates as a support while the glue goes off, I left the assembly 'as is' for the glue to do its job while I came in to write this first report and then have lunch - fingers crossed for the second stage after lunch.

  18. Well, another twist in the Class 22 saga, this time slightly more concerning than loosing a D prefix.

I took both 22s to the Club yesterday afternoon to give them both an outing, the blue one ran faultlessly and the green one siezed up!! I gave the green one twenty minutes on speed step 35 A cab leading then turned it round to Bcab leading and before I powered up, took these

    20220223_141921.jpg.c27741266cba443d6bfc1a3cd334d2ab.jpg

and then again set the throttle at speed step 35 and after ten minutes the green one stopped dead and on inspection the powered bogie was siezed up. End of running session for D6320 and into its box. When I reached home, I stripped the bogie down, (thank heaven for the bolted together bogie chassis) and the first gear from the drive shaft worm had had most of the thickness of the tooth worn away. Needless to say that the errant motor is on its way back from whence it came. I now have re-assembled the bogie, minus motor and re-connected the pick up wires to the decoder so that I can at least have the sound on while it is coupled up as a 'calf' to D6326 and we shall see what occurs this evening at the Club. Thoughts are now straying to think what the MX699ks can be re-used to power?

    New readers start here....................................................
