  1. It looks lovely but maybe just too new - when you compare to the b&w photo above it looks too pristine. Maybe rough it up a little bit and you’ll be happier with it?

I stepped back from model railways for a while and have been painting Warhammer miniatures, and one technique I’ve picked up there is to do a wash of a thinned down dirty colour, then a dry brush of a highlight colour or your original colour over the top.

  2. I was at Locomotion at Shildon on the 3rd and was looking at Locomotion No.1 and thought to myself, I wonder if Hornby will do a model of it for the Stockton and Darlington 200th in 2025... and was pleasantly surprised to see that this morning!

As posted by Simon Hudson in #38, Applegarth's Model Shop in Claypath, Durham was one source of model railways in the city. I remember leaving the shop with a flea in my ear after innocently  asking for a Tri-Ang item, being told in 'no uncertain terms' never to mention "that rubbish" in Mr Applegarth's hearing again. If I recall, he mainly stocked Trix stock which was way beyond my means in those days.

Alternative sources of Model Railways in Durham City were Staddons in North Road, who dealt in quality furniture on the first floor of the store and toys and models of all descriptions on the ground floor.

Hornby Dublo, Tri - Ang and latterly Wrenn products were stocked.

Finally, near Elvet Bridge was Boydells, which was primarily a toy store who stocked Tri-Ang, then Tri- Ang Hornby model railways.

I believe all three of these stores had closed by the late 1970s, due to proprietor's retirement in the first two cases, but I think, sadly due to economic over commitment in the case of the latter, who took on one of the two Beatties premesis (Eldon Square Newcastle) and were unable to make a go of it.

Most memorably in Newcastle was 'The Model Shop' originally located on Blenheim Street before re development enforced a move to Marlborough Crescent. I loved going 'Upstairs to the trains' in the original store which was  treasure house of RTR, kits and small parts. Sadly the re located store closed sometime in the last 3 years or so.

For too short a time, Northumbria Models provided an alternative source of Model railway equipment in Waterloo Street, Newcastle, but it is possibly 20 years since they closed their doors for the last time.

    Regards,

    Edited for typos

I think Boydells in Durham was possibly still going in the very early 80s, as I definitely have/had some models from there, and I was only born in 1977... I had a Hornby 37 in BR Blue and I think a Hornby BR green 08 shunter. I remember Staddons too, though that was primarily Airfix and Revell kits in the early 80s.

Northumbria Models in Newcastle was a nice little shop, very friendly, and they stocked some of the LINKA moulds, which I remember wanting but never getting.

Beatties on Northumberland Street in Newcastle was always a treat as I was fascinated by the trains running round at ceiling height.

Thankfully after a long fallow period, Co. Durham is now well served by Durham Trains of Stanley, and there is also the model shop at Chester Moor, though I tend not to visit there so much as Mick at DTOS is a friend and my first line of enquiry for anything!

  4. I've just had the chance to unbox mine, and try it on my short straight. I chipped it with a DCC Concepts Zen V12 Blue+ decoder. Most engines I've tried have run very smoothly from the box but this one is quite stuttery. I'll run it in, but it's unusual in that respect. Looks very pretty, lovely looking loco. Could just do with some nice RTR carriages to run with it!

  5. I never had the chance to meet Gordon in person but he was incredibly supportive, helpful and patient and took so much time to share his knowledge and experience with me by PM and through this thread. I finally had the chance to say hello face-to-face during the ERs virtual meet-up which was lovely.

My thoughts are with Jackie and Gordon’s family, as I know are all of those who knew Gordon through the forum. A really sad day, losing someone with so much more to achieve and with the energy and outlook of someone half his age.

    Gordon, you’ll be missed deeply.

  6. We’re all definitely looking forward to seeing more trains running around Eastwood Town, so fingers crossed for you and hope you’re back on your feet soon!

(Spoiler alert) Mickelson’s won the US PGA Championship at the age of 50 (just shy of his 51st) so there’s hope for you yet to beat his record! Don’t worry about getting out golfing, the greens will be waterlogged anyway, and it’s been so windy a westbound drive could well have ended up in the Solent… or the Wash!

Keep on fighting and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes,

    Mike & Anamaria

  7. Evening all from the wilds beyond the Wall.

The OH is busy “upcycling” a table. The legs have already had 3 different shades of green on them, so hopefully this will be the shade that meets with approval.

Had a pretty hectic day at work, followed by a drive over to Glasgow and back to drop Jamie back at her mum’s.

About ready to collapse in a little heap now, then start all over again tomorrow. Working 3 days this week, then off till next Wednesday but during my “long weekend” (ha ha) I’m moving my mum up to Edinburgh.

Not planning on watching the interview. I’ve nothing against either of them, but it doesn’t particularly float my boat. I watch very little tv as it is!

I soaked a large piece of tissue in after shave and jammed it inside my mouth in the general area of the swelling. I left it there for about an hour and then went to bed. I took the tissue out of my mouth before I lay down and just hoped that I could get to sleep.

In the event, I slept very well and when I woke up in the morning, not only had the pain vanished, but so had the swollen area of my gums. I had no more trouble for the rest of my stay. I assume the bacteria had been driven away by the alien environment of after shave.

    You Brut!
