  1. Geraint - not many photos of the works so that's a very interesting find. I love the state of the roof!! Robin
  2. David, As a former Weights & Measures Inspector I would describe your lovely model as suitable for a platform weighing machine rather than a weighbridge. The calibrated weighing beams for a weighbridge were much longer than the one you have modelled. The Lavenham Goods photo is of a 'sunken' platform machine probably of up to a couple of tons capacity. Weighbridges were usually 10tons or over. Robin
  3. Hi Chris, I really like the latest shed detailing products especially the GWR coal tubs scanned at Didcot. I have a model of Bristol Barrow Road engine shed and would be interested to know if Modelu could model the Ash disposal 'tubs' that were used at most of the LMS sheds that had the concrete tower ash disposal plants? I have included photos of the two types taken by myself at Carnforth a few years ago. The tall version ran on narrow gauge tracks alongside the ash disposal pits whilst the short version ran along tracks in the pit. The black and white photo is of the ash pits at Barrow Road showing both types in position. I would need a number of each and am prepared to discuss a commission. Robin
  4. Hi Chris, Love the GWR water cranes but I need some LMS ones any chance Modelu will do some in the future. I know there are still some at Carnforth, does anyone know of any others?
  5. Thanks for the tip Smokebox. I did try 068 and I thought 0068 but I tried both again today and the latter worked. All a bit strange as I have given other locos 0XX numbers without any problem.
  6. I have just converted the above model to P4. Before doing so I tested it with DC and it ran very well. The model was described as DCC fitted but the decoder, which I presume is a Hornby produce did not work. Using JMRI Decoder Pro the identity of the decoder showed as #522 - decoder manufacturer not found. An internet search suggests this means the decoder is faulty. I fitted a DCC Concepts Zen Black V12 decoder with 8pin harness and set the address as 68 as required by a customer. The model performed well using Decoder Pro. However when placed on my layout which uses NCE equipment the model would not go. A retest on Decoder Pro and it worked fine again. I have taken the model to a friends layout today which uses NCE equipment and the model does not work. Has anyone any suggestions. It works using JMRI Decoder Pro but does not work using NCE equipment. I have carried out a large number P4 conversions and fitted decoders. I always programme the decoder address using Decoder Pro but this is the first model that will not work on my NCE equipped layout.
  7. Hi, For the past week I get the above error code on my first attempt to sign in. The second try then works and I log onto the website. Why does this occur? barrowroad.
  8. There's a blast from the past Geraint keep up the good work. R
  9. I've never had a problem with Colin and he's always chatty and very helpful. I email him with my order and say I will pay by card over the phone once he confirms the items I want are available and in stock. He has been operating on his own during covid so on occasions I've had to contact with a reminder. Robin
  10. Looking good Geraint, nice to see your progress with Friden. Robin
  11. Tim, There were a number of 15ton and 20ton weighbridges in the Bristol area when I first started work as a Weights and Measures Inspector in the late 1960s and your 12ft 6in x 8ft 3in weighbridge plate would certainly take a two axle short wheelbase lorry even if it was originally for a horse drawn cart. I tested a lot of weighbridges including Pooley - mostly on railway linked properties - and Avery equipment. Robin
  12. I only met Terry once at a presentation he did for the Tewkesbury Railway group a few years ago when he kindly let me have copies of a few photos he had taken around Bristol Barrow Road engine shed. RIP Terry.
  13. No problems Tim, that's the benefit of converting a RTR model as the balance is already sorted. I have weighted the CSB tender at 100g as recommended by Dave Franks. Robin
  14. My latest conversion of a RTR loco is Bachmann Compound 4P 41157 which I have renumbered 41140 as I have a photo of it on shed. Conversion follows my now standard method using Alan Gibson wheels with Markits 10BA crankpins, reusing the Bachmann motion. The tender has a Dave Franks chassis but this time I had to leave off the water pickup gear in order to add extra pickups on the two rear axles of the tender. I'm pleased with the conversion. Here is a video of 41140 on a Gloucester to Bristol TM passing Barrow Road MPD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWIO-gKhAkU
  15. Thank you for the steam memories link Phil, I've not seem that before although I did find your RMweb question during a web search. Robin
  16. Phil, I have used information for the train makeup from a book by XPress Publishing 'Operation Midland' which gives details of all Midland coach formations and train times for 1955. The Devonian is shown as operating Monday to Friday with two trains in operation one Mon;Weds;Fri, and the other Tues; Thurs and vici versa. In 1955 both trains are made up from BR & LMS stock but I believe this changed when the regional boundaries changed in 1958. My guess would be the chocolate and cream western region stock would originate from around this date. There is photographic evidence to back this. Turning to the 1955 train make up: Set 33 - Brake third corridor [LMS]; Third Corridor; Third Corridor; Composite Corridor; Brake Third Corridor. The destination for these five is shown as Paignton Set 35 - Brake Third Corridor; Third Open; Restaurant Car [LMS]; Composite Corridor; Third Corridor; Brake Third Corridor. The train split at Newton Abbot and these six went through to Plymouth. The other train consisted of sets 36 and 34 [ similar make up]. All the other stock consisted of BR Mk1 coaching stock. I am aware there are differences in the train make up for post 1955 - ie 10 coaches rather than 11 and different catering vehicles, whilst others have argued that the catering vehicles went to Paignton rather than Plymouth. I have seen no direct evidence to support this either way and have based my train on the above data right or wrong. As someone said 'Rule One' it's my layout:-) Hope this helps Robin
  17. Thank you for your kind comments chaps. Ian you are quite correct that the northbound was a turn for Barrow Road to provide the engine and crew but that does not mean they would not return a Holbeck engine on the turn.
  18. David, The total coach weight is 1513g after I removed the Bachmann metal weight which weighed 33g per coach. Bengal can manage the gradient on the two curved end boards at the speed on the video but much higher speed can induce a little bit of wheel spin. Robin
  19. John, A photo of Bill's etched sprung bogie with white metal mjt frames glued on.
  20. It's been a while since I posted anything on this blog however I have been very busy on the layout during the past year completing several small buildings in and around the shed yard and cladding the Barrow Road viaduct with Wills Coarse Stone sheet and making all the scenery along the front of the layout. My latest completed project is the conversion of 11 Bachmann mk1 coaches to P4 using Bill Bedford sprung bogies with MJT frames; Masokits gangway connectors plus other detailing. Here is a video of Barrow Road Jubilee 45577 Bengal passing the shed with the southbound Devonian with the 11 converted coaches. In the foreground is the new scenery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOevUys7E28
  21. John, All my conversions of the Jubilees and the Patriots use Alan Gibson wheels - the 3mm axle conversion version for the drivers. I reuse the coupling rods. Crankpins front and rear drivers are Markits 10BA ones - the more expensive version. I drill and tap the wheels to take these. The centre crank is again Markits - there is a photo on one of my other blog entries - these are expensive at £9.50 a pair - especially as I only use the pin from this. This is the only semi difficult bit as it requires a bit of filing back and a slot cut across the top to accept the original Bachmann crank. I like doing it this way as I can reuse the coupling and motion. The front and rear of the coupling rods require re-bushing with Alan Gibson bushes. Part of the underside of the lower cab - the inside edge needs some metal removed to give clearance in P4. The tenders both Stanier or Fowler have Dave Franks chassis conversions. Are you considering doing one? Hope this helps. Robin
  22. Has anyone got any photos of the ferry that crossed over to the Staithes at North Blyth. I'm interested as a remember crossing early in the morning for an official group visit to North Blyth Shed in the early 1960s? Robin
  23. Dave, Thanks for your kind comments. It will not be good to have another meeting when you can bring your Scot for a run. Robin
