  1. According to the tracking, mine is out with my mail carrier, along with a book on the British Recce Corps during WW II (for a different hobby interest). Should be here early to mid afternoon. Wife is off to daughter's for a couple of days, so plenty of reading time. Jim Flynn
  2. just took a peek at my order info, the date has been changed to Thursday, the 12th. Since tomorrow is a national holiday over here, I wondered, so that explains the change. Whether it does get her the 12th remains to be seen. Jim Flynn
  3. Book ordered, Amazon tells me I will have it tomorrow, here in the US. As I hate to paint, though I do it when I have to, am really looking forward to trying some of Peter's methods. Jim Flynn
  4. Turtle, if you are a NGS member, UM usually has a ad at the back of the Journal, listing current models. Also, he is quite amendable to phone calls, from what I have read. 01624-852896 Jim F
  5. Peter's book 'Using Printed papers in Railway Modelling' doesn't cover this, it is all on using paper textures for structures, which is he preferred method for all the structure he does. Which, I might add, are stunning. He has stated above he is doing a new book on the method show in this thread. Hopefully available in a month or so. Jim F
  6. I am seriously going to explore this method for my OO locos, I think it would be a lot less fiddly. Jim F
  7. Sir, afraid I can't help much with any information you would need, as I am still struggling with much the same dilemma. One suggestion, however. Join the Circle sooner, rather than later. They have a very active Yahoo group, which is members only. Unlike many Yahoo groups, it has been more active in the past 3 years, than in it's early days. Lots of knowledgeable folks, both for prototype and modelling information. Jim Flynn
  8. Peter, sorry. Yes, I know of your other books, I was just thinking of the 2 I have, 'Using Printed Papers In Railway Modelling' and 'Scratchbuilt Buildings The Kirtley Way'. A shame the magazines felt that way, but I do think they focus more and more on RTR type items, nowadays. Perhaps offer it to the Guild O Gazette? Anyway, thanks you for all the info, and the great thread regarding Saltdean. Jim Flynn
  9. Pete, maybe a more in depth 'how to' of using paper for wagons, coaches and locos could be a future book, to go with your current 2 excellent ones? Jim Flynn
  10. Late to this thread, but the following link will take you to the 1st page of layout info that is one of my major influences. I'm amazed at the amount of info accumulated with regards to the layouts. http://early-lbscr.co.uk/ Jim F
  11. As much as I have enjoyed everything I have ever read by Iain Rice, his opposition against figures in motion is the one thing I disagree with. On 99.9% of layouts (there are a few that have moving vehicles, or other items), a train moving is the anomaly. Not only are people and vehicles not moving, there's no motion in the trees, flowers and other landscape items, no sounds except possible loco sounds if installed (and even then, no other train sounds). Even the coats of people standing perfectly still on a station platform would be moving a bit as a train passed To me, a layout is basically a still life, like a photo or painting, so why worry about what the figures are doing? To stay with the thread, figures from Stadden are getting close to the top of my shopping list. One more purchase of some wagons, then a purchase of a couple of coaches, then the figures. Jim F

Lots of comments regarding this model since it started actually being in people's hands. So far, my impression is the majority are happy with it, no derailing issues, no running issues. With all the vagaries as to track work (I'm not implying poor track work), is it actually reasonable to expect a model to run exactly the same on each and every layout? Have mine ordered from a Canadian dealer. Jim F
  13. Thanks for all the info, Richard. I'm considering P2111 and P2116 stations, for 2 different locations, but any info is a help. Jim F
  14. Bumping this again, to see if anyone has done any more with ABM kits, especially the newer LBSC station kit. Jim F
  15. Hi all. Just curious is there are any into pre-grouping here, that are working in N or 2mm. Jim F
  16. I have not seen a copy of this magazine, so have been reading what I can about it before committing to a purchase, as the cost to the US doubles the cover price. If I look at my cost to belong to the N Gauge Society as my subscription, my cost comes out to just over $6.00 US per issue. N Gauge Now would come out to $16. per issue, buying their 3 Issue Special. I do wonder, is it a sustainable magazine, or will it wither and die in a short time? Is the UK N Gauge market large enough for both N Gauge Now and the N Gauge Society's Journal, not even allowing for N gauge material in the general mags.? And are there enough N Gauge authors, to sustain it, as well? Yes, there are 2 US N scale only magazines, but I believe the market for N scale in the US is much larger than the UK's N Gauge market. Just wondering. Jim F
  17. Hi Peter. Under O Gauge 7mm on your Shapeways page, there are no listings. I read earlier in this thread that 7mm was available. Is that still the case? Jim
  18. My kit arrived pretty quick, as well, when I ordered last year. If I recall correctly, just over a week, to here in the US. My kit has been shelved, as I have finalized on working in O. I may try using it as a template for my O scratchbuild, however. Jim F
  19. Peter, fantastic! Great to see another pre-grouping layout, and not a GWR one My plans are similar to yours (though SER based), though will be even more fictional. Being in the US, however, I doubt anyone who ever sees it will know. Your books were one of the factors that had me finally settle on 7mm, am slowly starting on my first scratch build of a SER station, using your methods. Looking forward to seeing and reading about your progress. Jim F
  20. Don't know it it would be of interest, but SERKits do a SER 4 wheel Goods Brake Van: http://serkits.com/ At top of page, click Gallery-Wagons, it's the pic at bottom of middle row. Cost is same as Slater's kit. Jim F
  21. Nice! Any possibility of 7mm ones in the future? Jim F
  22. Looking forward to the next edition of the Digest. I've re-joined the Brighton Circle, and have also settled on working in7mm. After exploring what all working in 4mm EM or P4, but not wanting to use standard OO track, and, knowing I would not be building a sizable layout in any scale, I decided I'd prefer to work with things I don't need the magnifiers for as much I know what you mean about pension vs. expenses, Choo1choo. However, I did a lot of adding up costs, and 7mm is not much more for what I want for my given space. It's more the cost of a item at one shot that one has to get one's head around. My first kits will be a few SER items, however, then LBSCR. Jim F
  23. I have found the lowest prices anywhere in the US, for anything Walthers stocks, to be Blue Ridge Hobbies, in SC. Blue Ridge Hobbies There website is not the easiest to use, but you can search using Walthers stock numbers. If the do not have it in stock, but Walthers does, there can be a few days longer wait, but they order from Walthers on a daily basis. Not sure those in the UK would benefit, they do ship international, but not sure their polocies would be worth it, unless the prices made it so. Jim F PS: I do have a local shop, thought it's not as well stocked as it was in it's heyday. The Little Choo Choo Shop, in Spencer NC. If visiting the area, it's worth a stop, and then one could visit the NC Transportation Museum right across the street. It's housed in the old Southern Railway Spencer shops. many of the buildings have been refurbished, the roundhouse has a full working restoration shop and a working turntable.
  24. Excellent looking items, hope we see more and more lasercut wood UK structures. Over here, structure building is almost a hobby on it's own. Jim F
  25. Hey Doug, I followed your build, elsewhere, you are a master craftsman! My hat's off to you. You have built a beautiful model. I looked at this kit for use as a station building as well, but will probably go with the large LBSCR one from ABM Railcraft. Jim F
