  1. I seem to remember an 08 was used on passenger specials at Salisbury. Ran from Salisbury to the Laverstock loop and back to Salisbury. Not long distance but still a passenger working!

I have just discovered my notes for this time period and 17/10/70 has the following locos noted- D1937 D7053 D2136 D6327 D2121 D6603 D6989 D7000 D19 D15 D6885 D84 D7019 D1724 D1062 D6308 D5530 D7009 D1673 D149 D869 D1929 D1008 PWM650 D6327 D7001 D146 D138 D7072 D1018 D1007 D3255 D7025 D6975 D6988 The notes only state Bristol Temple Meads/Bath Road so would include locos on service trains and on depot that day.
  3. A regular Bristol to Weymouth working in the late evenings during the 1960's was a 3 car unit hauling a SR CCT or similar. I was told by station staff at Westbury that the van contained Channel Islands mail. Does anyone have any photos of these workings?
  4. In October 1968, I saw D247 running light engine, passing through Trowbridge from the Westbury direction. The only time a saw this class of loco on this line.
  5. In the photograph of the crab you can see two of the ex L&Y pugs that used to shunt the Avon Street branch. Great set of photographs, they bring back memories of my childhood. Thank you for sharing them.
  6. To the south of the shed, behind the coaling point and its ramp, were two long sidings accessed by a short headshunt. I can remember that there was a very short concrete platform with steps alongside one of the sidings. I have so far been told that they were- a. for the storage of full and empty loco coal wagons (but they are facing the wrong way for this to be done without running round for every movement, which doesn't seem very practical to me). b. laid down during WW2 for storage of surplus stock Can anyone else throw any light on the purpose of these sidings?
  7. Thanks for that, I had forgotten that they were used as bankers on the Lickey incline! I was particularly interested in their use in multiple in everyday service.
  8. I know that Hymeks were wired for multiple working and had a yellow triangle symbol for this but did anyone ever see two Hymeks working in multiple? Two warships or two NB Type 2 and sometimes warship and NB Type 2 combinations were not unusual but although I saw 94 of the 101 members of this class, they were always working alone. If anyone has any recollection of this, or even better, some photographic evidence I would be very grateful.
  9. A neighbour had a Heinkel 3 wheeler, similar shape to the Isetta. It was a British built model made by Trojan. By the way, I believe the Isetta was actually made by BMW.
  10. Sundeala board comes in different grades. Sundeala K board is an industry standard board and is widely used throughout the construction industry and is hardly 'past its sell by date'. It is eminently suitable for baseboard construction. It needs bracing at preferably 300mm centres but produces a strong and light baseboard. It is readily available from good buiders merchants in 8' x 4' boards, just make sure you ask for Sundeala K board as other grades are made. I have tried other types of material but now always use Sundeala K board. When constructing a large layout in the USA
  11. On what evidence do you base your statement "there was no doubt that the quality of some of the work done at Swindon was declining" ? This requires some justification surely as otherwise it may be construed as a slur on the workforce many of which might be offended by this.
  12. I have two 56XX locos and also 2nd radius curves. Neither loco has any problem when pulling in either direction. I have had a good look at the position of the coupling by stopping a train on a 2nd radius curve and whilst the coupling is quite well over to one side, it is not as far as it could go and could go further. Both locos have the original factory supplied couplers. Have yours been changed?
  13. Most new diesel and electric models have lighting but models of steam locomotives (dampfloks) do not have lighting. Steam locos in the UK did not have headlamps and used oil lamps which were placed in various positions to indicate the type of train.
  14. Pigs were most definitely sent by train in cattle wagons. The Western Region Calne branch in particular received pigs for the local bacon factory by this means. Although quite often in there own trains, the cattle wagons were often attached to an autocoach train and usually the pigs outnumbered the passengers! I can remember these workings but I think they ceased in about 1964 when DMUs arrived. After that the wagons were always conveyed in there own train. I can also remember cattle being loaded, the empty wagons were shunted into the loading dock line and left until the lorry arrived
