They weren't bad shows, a lot were quite good but I've decided to get out to see railways and canals, and I've ended up with a list that looks like: S4N ExpoEM Railwells Scaleforum Warley I omitted Railex, as it was very close to ExpoEM, and I haven't included the S4 AGM as I was working there! Have you seen they are converting the Gloucester - Ledbury line back into a canal!
  5. I did a count and realised that last year all I did was go to exhibitions! It was about 14, not counting the ones I was appearing/working in. I need to get out more often! I've cut it down to six for this year, and I'm getting out and about. I've even got interested in canals, a fascinating period in history. Do you realise that there is a chance that the canal network could be fully restored, while there is little possibility that railways will be restored to their former glory.
  6. I will put in a vote for the Unimat. I would suggest a precision vertical drill is the tool that will get the most use. A mill and a lathe both have their uses. Good lighting is essential, under certain lighting machine tools can strobe - looking like they are not moving. OK I know a lot are noisy!
  7. So you would walk 1000+ yards in each direction out to the distant signals twice a day to light them and extinguish them?
  8. When the lamps were lit, they were on all the time. The lamp would usually last about eight days. The lampman/porter would have to go out to collect them once a week, with replacement lamps. They were not extinguished on a daily basis.
  9. Personally, I don't bother lighting the signals, most of the time they weren't lit anyway. The sectional appendix says when the lamps were lit. And I don't operate my layout at night time.
  10. Yes, decent pictures of the cab on GW engines are like hens teeth. However, the pictures I have seen show standard GW fittings for the firebox door, regulator, lubricator and steam head. So on mine I have put those.

    Thanks Nick Yes I agree that it might have been better posted in an open discussion, however, the picture is just a 60 year old snapshot of my parents. It is a fascinating picture as it's a colour print taken in 1950 at a time when rationing was going on in Britain. My parents were abroad then. It is regrettable that I couldn't post it on the forum, but there is no railway content. As for longevity, I've seen Victorian prints that were as clear as originally printed. Probably more luck than anything.
  15. Cheddar valley model Andy, now there's an idea! Sandford and Banwell was done some years ago in P4, but there's plenty of opportunity down that line. I have the coach workings for 1952 in case you're interested........
  16. I've just been scanning and restoring a photograph of my parents taken almost 60 years ago. It's in colour, very faded, 2 1/4" square print. A few minutes work and the colours jumped out at me. I won't be posting it on here obviously, but you'll get my drift. I do wonder if some of today's wizzo digital camera pictures will be viewable like this in 60 years time? Will the prints have faded? Will the discs they are stored on still be readable? Anyone remember drive B? Anyone using Windows 3.1?
  17. 1 Have you measured the axles, you're only assuming they're 3mm. 2 I haven't seen it in its current condition, but I would assume that the water scoop would not be fitted.

    With all the new additions by Bachman and Hornby etc, I'd better get on and finish some of my projects! Already a ex GW ROD is nearly available, my near scratchbuilt one has been taking me far too long.

  20. They came out in the mid 70s, and were very good. I have not had problems in fitting wheels in the Ratio W irons. What you have to watch out for is that the sides bow in, as I think the tapers on the corners are wrong. Leave them with a spacer across the middle to splay the sides out. I could find some I built in '76 still running! Wooden wagons, particularly 13T mins would splay out under the action of the load.
  21. That T gauge is something, a 30' station in 4mm could be built in 5' in T gauge - must watch this with interest.

    Coaches

    I had a look at the MJT corridor connections on some coaches, I found I could solder a 10BA screw on the back, and use this to vary the length of the corridor connectors. A few minutes work, and a coach that was in the scrap box was available for use.
