    TRAINS! Duh! :)

After many years, we now live in a house with space for a layout, and I can begin putting my ideas into some semblance of reality.

Total lack of skill (my painting is atrocious) and lack of coin are the two main hurdles.

Hold on for a bumpy ride - this is going to be messy!

  1. Hi All, Sorry if this is the wrong thread! I think it best fits here... I'm looking at building a simple signal box as my first foray into scratchbuilding. I've managed to work out almost all of the dimensions for a Type 4 RSCo. Signal Box, based on the box at Swinton (Manchester), apart from the lower windows below the main sash windows at on the upper part of the cabin. Does anyone know how big they were in ft/inches? I think they are 2' 2¾" wide, with ¾" sash bars in the middle (based on scans in an LYR Signalling book I have), but the height of the windows I can't find anywhere. I've circled them in red on the picture attached, which I found a good picture of the box here on RMweb by Jon F: Any help great apprecated! Thanks, Ben
  2. Hey, Not sure if you've taken a look at this yet, but there is a book called British Railways Layout Plands of the 1950s - Volume 5: ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Lines in West Lancashire. Long title!! It covers from Southport/Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria West Junction so it could have some of the information you're looking for. Shows signals too, which is handy. Obviously it's not to scale, but it's a useful reference point! It's in signal box order, so in the Manchester/Salford City Centre section, goes Windsor Bridge No2 > Hope Street (Goods Only) > Windsor Bridge No1 > Salford > Deal Street > Manchester Victoria West Junction. Hope this helps. If you're building a layout with that plan, I take my hat off to you sir! Most complex! Ben
