  1. Age is relative. the "old postcard" is from about 1970 and certainly not contemporary with the real thing. In BR days it was given LNWR style lining. At one time it was said that the cylinder block would be preserved. in the early-mid 1960s it was still dumped at Derby loco Works along with the Fell's main gearbox.
  2. Granted but the OP does say seven or eight coaches out of Manchester. Did we lose some somewhere without me noticing? 🤔
  3. I would suggest that, by 1938, Jubilees would be coming on line on the Midland so through working would be becoming the order of the day. They worked from Bristol to Leeds and from Leeds to Glasgow so St. Pancras to Manchester shouldn't have been a problem.
  4. Derby used to have station pilot locos at each end which would do the necessary shunting to attach/detach extra vehicles to any particular train so you probably ended up with the additional coaches and milk tanks added to the rear of what left Manchester. How they dealt with that lot at St. Pancras is another matter but, by the time it got there it would be late at night and somewhat quieter than in the middle of the day.
  5. YES!! Last time I did that was to send a payment from my building society. Because I didn't have a currnent account with them, just a savings account, they charged me £20 for the privilege 🥵
  6. I was simply pointing out the location of surviving 04 shunters throughout their development stages where you can see the actual locos rather than old photographs.
  7. Surely the place to see 04 shunters these days is the Heritage Shunter Trust at Rowsley. According to Wikipedia, they have six examples in their custody ranging from D2205 to D2337.
  8. In the 1950s, I believe cranes were pained black with LNWR style (i.e. BR Mixed Traffic) lining.
  9. 2101 is at Derby, opposite the north end of Platform 6 as was. Nice find btw.
  10. 16ft 6in would be the 'nominal' contact wire height on open track. Remember that the contact wire height was raised at level crossings and reduced at overbridges The remaining A3s and A4s got the stripe as well. It was to do with the overall height of the loco.
  11. Don't think any ordinary British 4- or 6-wheeled passenger coaches had gangways.
  12. Didn't the German 6-wheelers have gangways?
  13. As I understand it, the tender fitted to the preserved Midland Compound was from one of the first batch of SDJR 2-8-0s (not to be confused with the Fowler 'Austin7' 0-8-0). This is evidenced by the shape of the front cut-out which was a throw-back to the tender cabs originally fitted to these locos. The tender fitted to 1000 at withdrawal was one of the hybrid tenders with a short Fowler body on a longer Deeley chassis and the only suitable replacement was a SDJR version.
  14. I renewed my driving licence in January. No passport, no problem.
  15. Some suppliers like Wickes and B&Q (there must be others) offer pre-cut plywood sheets. It might be worth you having a wander round the various outlets (shops to most people) to see what is available as one may be different from another. Always assuming you have any shops nearby and that you can get to them of course. They may offer a delivery service (for a fee, no doubt).
  16. Lenham on the SECR line between Maidstone and Ashford, 26 Oct 1984. The box is obviously not a pre-grouping design.
  17. While we are on at car (and other) drivers, those who drive round with no lights on at all in the most dismal of weathers (fog, snow, pouring rain etc.), saving their batteries for the next world thinking that they don't need lights if it's not 'lighting up time'; some think they are doing the world a favour by switching on their 'half-a-candle-power' side lights which are neither use nor ornament! lights are not just to see in the dark, they are so that you can see them when conditions demand.
  18. From a visit to the preserved Kent and East Sussex Railway on 27 October 1984: Tenterden Town and Wittersham Road
  19. So you need one to go back in time to get one (have I got that right?)
  20. Stainforth, formerly Stainforth and Hatfield, GCR, 9 Aug 1979
