I’m not sure if my latest completions fit the ‘brought back to life’ brief (of a couple of weeks back) or the ‘modelling on a budget’ brief initiated a few pages back. Either way, I’ve refurbished another pair of 30 year old Parkside Dundas wagons – a PC25 13T LNER 5 Plank Open and a PC28 BR 12T Shock Open.

When doing this type of modelling, I initially begin by trying to take them back to their individual pieces and then clean up the mouldings, remove any mouldings or detail that I intend to replace with better quality components, drill the required holes for additional detail and so forth. Sometimes I’m fortunate and they disassemble easily, other times the glue bonds remain strong. This was the case with the LNER 5 plank open, only the brake levers were easily removed (along with the wheels) so actions such as drilling out the brake hangers to take the cross rods was done with them still in place, a touch awkward but doable.

I made up the brake safety loops from left over offcuts of .45mm nickel wire and door bangers from fret waste and vacuum pipes from left over .8mm brass rod and wrapped with a strand of stripped electrical wire.

The Shock wagon came apart more easily, and as I wasn’t sure what I would ‘load’ it with, I decided to cut out the sub floor and replace it with about 35g of lead sheet. I replaced the tie bars with left over thin brass strip.

    ParksideDundasPC28BRShockOpen(01).jpg.88d44a5e86e8c558759fa8670911ef2b.jpg

On both wagons I was able to drill through the buffer shanks with a .5mm drill and then partway through (about 90%) with a .9mm drill so that Alan Gibson spring buffer heads could be fitted.

    And the right way up…

They’re both finished in Railmatch Freight Stock Bauxite 2235, transfers by CCT and weathered with a light wash and some dry brushing. I have tried to represent the interiors as unpainted using a variety of Vallejo acrylic ‘wood colours’, a brown wash and some dry brushing.

I decided to load the 5 plank open with a Bachmann container, with some lead glued inside it. Both will have instanter couplings fitted once they arrive from Rumney Models.

A few hours of quite enjoyable modelling done over a number of weeks.

    Kind regards,

    Iain

Very fine work, Iain. Do you airbrush your wagons?

    All the best,

    Nick.

  2. A very exciting proposal. I have been planning to get on with building a layout for quite some time and the society challenge has come at the right moment. Time to dust down the layout sketch book; rummage about in the track box, and find an interesting arrangement.

I might have an idea (or five) bouncing around in my head. 👀 The question is, will it fit in the space? 💁‍♂️

    Regards,

    Nick.

  3. Dear all,

I have a selection of PMVs, CCTs and a Bogie Van B, which I am in the process of painting into Post-War Southern Railway Malachite green for a good friend. The models will be based on similar examples running between 1945-1947.

I have the HMRS Bulleid Loco and Coach transfer pack, which addresses the 'Southern' lettering, numbering, guard and luggage; however, COVCAR doesn't appear anywhere (I suspect the 'XP' and wheelbase will need to be BR yellow transfers, which is fine). I've had a quick look on Fox's website and Railtec, and they don't have anything, nor does CCT. I noticed that Fox has a Maunsell-era coach sheet, which does have a few more luggage transfers on it. Were they massively different?

So two questions, really. First of all, does a 'COVCAR' transfer exist at all for a Malachite liveried van in 4mm scale suitable for a CCT?  And is there a sheet with additional 'luggage' transfers on the market for Malachite liveried vehicles bar the HMRS sheet (which only has 4 luggage transfers on the sheet)?

Any other useful information and pointers would be most useful!

    Kind regards,

    Nick.

  7. Greetings all,

Robin has kindly suggested I mention this on his thread. I'm currently undergoing quite a large clear-out of my BR Western and Southern Region stock. My modelling interests have moved more towards the pre-nationalised period, and frankly, I have a real mix of stuff, very little that matches up! I'm also hoping to move fairly soon, so I need to clear the decks.

A number of things will be listed in the classified section over the coming days, but essentially more SR Hornby locomotives will be in the next wave, plus some more Western steam and diesel stock. I've also got about 25-30 Bachmann chocolate and cream MK1 coaches, which I have yet to list. Essentially, all are brand new, stock boxed and ready to go. Plus freight stock, RTR wagons mostly. There are some Bachmann presentation items, too - WW1 Ambulance Train and a Railway Children set, all of which will need new homes.

Stay tuned, and thanks again, Robin.

    All the best,

    Nick.

I doubt we'll see one from Hornby unless that have a project already well advanced and too far on to cancel.  Others, I'm sure, are far more likely to go for this particular prize.

I agree, Mike. Wouldn't it be lovely if Accurascale produced one to accompany their Siphon G models.

    Kind regards,

This is an accurate model of the 6-wheel GWR tanker: https://website.rumneymodels.co.uk/milk-tanks

    Greetings,

Justin's etched parts are available, but I don't think David Geen is producing anything these days (which is the base model required to produce the milk tank). Having said that, it might be worth talking to Justin as he might be prepared to produce the missing parts (ends, solebars, buffers etc.) to accompany his detailing and underframes.

    All the best,

Some of the K38s were definitely painted all over brown in the pre WW2 era.  I have in the past consulted the GWR Carriage Registers which give details, dates, etc when vehicles were altered including livery changes and some of the K38s were definitely repainted in brown and in that period would have had the GWR roundel.  I cannot easily access my notes relating to this material but what I found was definitive enough for  me to do one in this livery myself - photo attached. I also have a photo taken at Weymouth in the late 1930s showing the Channel Island Boat Express leaving and the first vehicle in the train is a K38 in brown - again I would have to dig deep to find it.  As an aside to this Carriage Working Programmes show that the Channel Island Boat Express always had such a van in the train and other photographs show that this was often a K38 in full Ocean Mails livery - certainly I have photos of the boat train on the Weymouth Harbour Tramway in 1939 with such a vehicle in the formation.

    A beautiful model, Gerry.

May I ask, what paint did you use, please? The weathering is excellent, too - it reflects the Wartime and Post-War Austerity very well.
