  1. @Burnham-on-sea - Thank you to you and everyone else involved for putting on this lovely show. It was indeed a very friendly show! I heard club members expressing their pleasure at how busy it was for a Sunday. It looked like there was a good mix of enthusiasts and families, and I think it was a really good advert for the hobby! It was my third show with my son, just turned two, since I had a bit of a hiatus from attending model railway exhibitions. It was our favourite so far, with a well balanced mix of layouts in scale and theme. The other two we have been to have been very diesel-heavy, even the 1960s layouts, so it was lovely to see a bit of everything. The operator on Happy Valley was so friendly and kind, I was able to have a sit down in front of the layout whilst he picked out some of my son's favourite Thomas characters, Gordon being a particular highlight. The chaps on Seabury Town noticed his interest in their lovely O gauge Flying Scotsman and ensured it was pressed into service on the next train (I also really enjoyed all the moving cameos on this layout, especially the representation of a Gauge O guild layout!). Sandling was also great fun, with the operators giving us a closer look at their collection of terriers when they noticed our interest, whilst also operating a very intensive service with an intriguing fiddle yard/cassette technique. @ColinK we really enjoyed your layout too! Always something going on and it was great fun watching your huge locos chasing after each other! It's a good job that the wall in the photo you have posted is low enough to allow the swing of your larger steam loco's running plate to pass over it! I also appreciated Bampton in OO, representing something similar to what I would like to one day achieve. Smethurst was top quality and the TT and N gauge layouts were great fun. Sorry to not mention all the layouts but they were all very enjoyable. We did a bit of trade with SMTF, picking up a Peco Bowsider and a Bachmann 4MT (75014, having enjoyed a ride behind the real thing last weekend at Cheddleton, it would have been rude not to buy it!). The 20% show discount made the prices very competitive. Finally, the ladies on the front door were very cheerful and welcoming. My little one left with a few free goodies such as a colouring sheet and a Thomas book. Thanks again, great show and we will look out for it again next year.
  2. I agree wholeheartedly. The current livery is beautiful whilst being a nod to the loco's origins. I can never find where I read this but I'm sure No 27 is planned to be outshopped in Maunsell Olive. Presumably having been restored from a rather life expired state, 178 could also be a relatively speedy overhaul?
  3. Superb layout, lovely to see it in the flesh today!
  4. These look superb and the livery options are very exciting. It's nice to see a sudden influx of non-chocolate and cream GWR liveries too (forthcoming auto coach and Kernow's railmotor included). My question below might seem a bit strange, but please bear with me. I am trying to justify purchasing one, and certainly can't justify a rake of 6. I am wondering about the physical practicalities of tagging an all third on the end of another rake, specifically in a preservation era context. Reading between the lines of the lives of these coaches, it sounds thoroughly un-prototypical in their normal working lives. I currently run a 3 set of Hornby Collett corridor bow-enders, which if anything, is a bit too uniform for a GWR preserved rake! I am thinking about getting an all third as a strengthening vehicle, but I note the 'outer' ends of the brakes have longer buffers. For a preservation society to use one of the 'inner' coaches in this way, would it likely need significant modification?
  5. I like this question! The stand out for me is the BCC Fairburn in CR Blue. I don't know why exactly. I am fond of the Fairburns for their Southern connections, but the real thing wore this livery before I was alive and as far as I'm aware, never visited other railways in this condition. I have plenty of Pullmans but I also regret missing out on the Hornby 12 wheelers. I held off buying an Olive S15, hoping that a preserved example, or at least one with the flush sided tender would follow. Not too late I suppose. Similar for the Hattons P, but at least they are doing a re-run!
  6. Excellent! Great to see it back. Thank you Dave and the Hattons team. Missed out on an olive example last time. Very good price too, I believe it is actually cheaper than the last run when first released?
  7. I discovered this having snapped up W numbered crimson-cream MK1s, a further solitary W numbered MK1 (SO I think it is) was released a few years later but the darker, ribless roof sticks out like a sore thumb. Unpopular opinion I'm sure but I prefer the ribs to completely smooth! I'm sure a happy medium could have been achieved. I personally don't want to see an all-new Mk1. I agree with the comments that both Hornby and Bachman variants stand up well. An all singing, all dancing model will surely cost similar to the current prices which make rake building a rather eyewatering prospect, whilst at regular viewing distances, I can't imagine the benefits will be that obvious, aside from the ribs of course! Having said that, I am happy to join the calls for further BR (S) Bulleids! Will be nice to see what else comes in the OO9 range too. Hopefully Bachmann America will announce Dolgogh to follow on from Tallylyn at some point.
  8. A Chesham set perhaps? Would be wonderful! I think the Met E class might have been more up Hornby's street in the past but I feel with the recent move to pushing out large named locomotives I won't hold my breath. Continuing a Bluebell theme, I'd like to see the S15 back in Olive livery. I missed out on the previous issues. Obviously 847 would be my preference, but I would be in the market for any Olive S15. I wonder if they may be put off by the length of time the consecutive numbered black versions seemed to hang around. I've said elsewhere I'd like to see Stepney in A1x IEG livery and Fenchurch in A1 Umber livery (or IEG as it has just emerged) I would prefer that the competitor released these but having spoken to RoS staff, there doesn't seem to be any active plans for a further run of the competing terrier. Hopefully I am wrong and they were keeping their cards close to their chests! Whoever produces them first (if at all) would get my money! Whatever happens, the future Terrier liveries will be interesting.
  9. Having given up on predictions due to never having got one right, I decided not to comment on the Bachmann Christmas announcement thread that I thought the surprise model would be a mainline Hunslet with a tender... So, with renewed enthusiasm, my prediction is that if the Black 5 is being redone, the Rebuilt MN is due for a revamp too. I would like to stress 'due' rather than 'required' as I think most post 'super detail' era models stand up pretty well to scrutiny. I'd rather see new ground covered like a SR U, SR Q or LNER K4. Failing that, as others have suggested, perhaps the 8F is in line at some point. Another that I appreciate can be improved, but doesn't necessarily need it. It will be interesting to see if the move in TT leads to a slightly watered down feeling to the OO announcement.
  10. This is a very kind offer. Thank you. The ones that Nigel has posted have been quite interesting in that there appear to be a combination of small sets with additional loose coaches of different types. Order placed for the R set.
  11. Thanks Phil! My layout is BR(s) but I'm pretty much one of those rule one people. I do like my trains to at least 'look right' though. So what I'm really asking is what could set 69 (or identical sets) in BR(s) green realistically be coupled to?
  12. Please could someone advise what the 2-car R sets would be marshalled in with when part of longer trains? The blood and custard pages are a really good resource but I've not managed to find the information I'm looking for. I've seen lots of references to how they can represent a branch-line portion of mainline trains. Would they be seen tagged onto the end of H or L sets? Or even in combination with 59' 3-car sets or formations of Maunsells/Mk1s? Ideally I'd prefer a H set in BR Green, but as with those waiting for maroon Thompsons, who knows if and when we will see that, and who knows what the price of a single carriage will be by the time they appear.
  13. If no spares are available it makes listing a broken one at £80 seem a bit unfair https://www.hattons.co.uk/949062/hattons_originals_h4_p_008_po08_secr_p_class_0_6_0t_31323_in_br_black_with_late_crest_pre_owned_missing_chimne/stockdetail What on earth happened to this poor thing? https://www.hattons.co.uk/971047/hattons_originals_h4_p_004_po08_secr_p_class_0_6_0t_a325_in_sr_lined_maunsell_green_with_maunsell_lettering_pre/stockdetail
  14. I would love to know if there is another run of OO Terriers on the way with Rails of Sheffield. I have never actually asked whilst in the shop as I assume that if there are plans, they will be announced in good time! I'd put in pre-orders straight away for Bluebell's terriers in preserved liveries if announced, and whilst I have only purchased the Dapol/Rails terriers and would prefer to keep it that way, if the competition got there first, I would probably have my head turned! -A1x condition No.55 Stepney in IEG -A1 condition No.672 Fenchurch, preferably in umber, but I'd also be happy with IEG as it is about to appear in reality. Brighton Works in IEG would be great too. I've been really pleased with my recent Dapol locos. 2 Terriers, D class, B4, Mogul and Manor, all excellent.
  15. Thank you No Decorum and Ruston! I had heard that these generic Chinese motors were good, but that was from a 'polarising' youtuber. I will give this a go when time allows and report back. This may well be beyond my capabilities, but is worth a try.
  16. Hi all, I wanted to reignite this thread to ask for advice about how best to proceed with my original DJM Wilbert, which went up in a puff of smoke. Soon after purchase it stalled, but a replacement blanking plug was enough to fix this issue. It has run OK ever since until straying onto the same live section of track as my incredibly power hungry Dapol 121. A further blanking plug change has not resolved the matter, not that I thought it would! I assume it is a replacement motor that is needed. The loco did not come with instructions on how to dismantle, so I have had similar issues trying to take it apart as Ruston has outlined in the last post. I have found the screws underneath which let the chassis come free of the boiler/saddle tanks, but I have not managed to fully separate due to the wiring. I have approached a local model shop who have quoted £30 for repair but caveated that they don't have an account with Bachmann/EFE currently to source spare parts. My questions therefore are: 1. Can anyone advise how the loco comes apart? 2. If I can source the EFE motor from the current model, would it be interchangeable with the DJM one? 3. Would I be better off buying an EFE loco and swapping the chassis over? Most expensive, but most definitive repair if possible. Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help!
  17. Thanks for this. RTT is a great resource but I found it pretty confusing today with the trains leaving Weymouth delayed and out of order! At times, the 1709 departure went missing from the list. I went out to see it though, and am glad I did. Whilst waiting, I met a couple of Italian exchange students who were brought out by their host. They were excited to see a steam engine outside of a museum! I'm not into diesels at all, but if there's something to point the camera at, I will do! I understand the other two Class 47s were on their way to Norwich. WCRC's 47 is pictured awaiting Clan Line's move from Yeovil.
  18. The language used on the advertising of today's train to Weymouth is a little vague - my understanding is that Clan Line is being serviced at Yeovil, with diesel haulage to Weymouth, before Clan Line runs light to Weymouth to take the train the whole way back to London. Is this the case? I'm in Weymouth today and hoping to photograph it. Thanks in advance.
  19. Does anyone know what has happened to KESR liveried sentinel Gervase since Elsecar fell on hard times? A quick Google has not provided answers.
  20. An exciting project! Preserved Hayling Island is a great idea. I look forward to seeing the layout progress
  21. Great photos of DoG Rob. Unfortunately when this was available I wasn't in a financial position to buy one, hopefully I will get another opportunity in the future! I'd throw the Adams radial in as an underrated model. There was a bit of a hubbub around the radial when released, partially due to the Oxford Rail rival product, but you don't hear so much about it any more. I have two, and other than a loose chimney on the preserved version (easily fixed) they've both been reliable, quiet runners with a good level of detail and livery application. My second was picked up at a reasonably good price, and there were a few BR black versions that lingered in 'bargain' sections of the box-shifter's websites. Models of a similar age such as the S15, K1 and J15 all seemed pretty good too, but struggled to shift. They seemed to fall victim to Hornby churning out a further variants in surprisingly quick succession, perhaps saturating the market.
  22. Thanks! Just the kind of article I was looking for. If the render is an accurate representation of the model that will be produced, there will be quite obvious differences. From the product page: 'The Kent & East Sussex Railway has been synonymous with 'Terriers' since purchasing the 1872 built No. 70 'Poplar' in 1901. Having spent most of its life on the K&ESR, to celebrate its 150th anniversary the Railway commissioned 'Poplar's overhaul, with the locomotive now resplendent in its original livery of Stroudley 'improved engine green'' Whilst this isn't specific, I read it as Hornby at least claiming the product to represent the loco as returning from overhaul. To answer my own question in the previous post however: 'This Limited Edition of 500 has been produced with the full cooperation of The Kent & East Sussex Railway and loco owners, The Terrier Trust.'
  23. A total of 5 new, eclectic terrier identities in the 2022 announcement today: In the main range is the genuinely interesting, and a bit different choice of: https://uk.Hornby.com/products/departmental-a1x-terrier-0-6-0-ds680-era-6-r30122 I'm sure most will know, but this is No.54 Waddon. Now in Canada, there were some rumours that it could return for the Barrow Hill event this year. I don't see this happening, but who knows? The club exclusive: https://uk.Hornby.com/products/sr-terrier-0-6-0t-662-martello-era-3-club-exclusive-r30217 Martello as it has run since 2016. Martello was never, I understand, an IoW engine yet gained an extended bunker in BR days. Despite this product being marked as era 3, it seems to be more a preservation era model as it would not have had the extended bunker when it originally wore olive green. Please correct me if I'm wrong! If I manage to see the real Martello before the model comes out, it might be worth joining the collectors' club for. The IoW set: https://uk.Hornby.com/products/isle-wight-central-railway-terrier-train-pack-era-3-r3961 The Hornby 4 wheelers seem to look good in this livery. The engine is 11 Newport, which currently sports olive green, but has worn the black IoW livery in preservation previously and therefore the model can cross-era roles. I find it a bit odd that a 3 coach train needs so much braking and luggage capacity, but an attractive set all the same. The anniversary edition: https://uk.Hornby.com/products/kesr-terrier-150th-anniversary-pack-era-23-r30123 A very nice touch. Some had predicted a nod to the 150th anniversary of the class. To expect all 10 would have been unrealistic, so to pick 2 that we will hopefully be able to see together in these conditions is a good idea. It will be really interesting to see if the real Bodiam/Poplar returns from overhaul in Norfolk in the same condition as the model. For example, Bodiam's distinctive coal rails are not included in the render - a mistake by Hornby or will the real loco have them removed? I have not managed to find any up to date information about its overhaul as to how far the back-dating will go. It seems from some of Hornby's diesel releases (Class 50 in particular), appropriate preservation groups have not been consulted about forthcoming models of their prototypes of interest. Will they have spoken to the Terrier Trust? I have noticed that many are calling for Stepney in A1x IEG across social media. It still makes sense to me as a sure-fire seller. I really can't understand why either terrier-producer has shied away from this for so long. Perhaps there are concerns about TTTE copywright, but Hornby's Lion announcement today makes me think that they feel confident they can get around this kind of thing. I have so far backed the Rails terrier, but whoever produces this first will get my money. Same for 672, though Dapol having produced this in O gives me hope that we may see it in OO in the not too distant future. I just hope that Rails saw sufficient return from their first batch to give them confidence to run another. 2022 looks to be the best year for Terriers since the galas of 2006, in which there were 2 galas featuring differing combinations of 5 of the 6 then operational terriers. (A set of these 6 in the conditions they operated in that year would be a real dream, come on Chris... be realistic...) I can't find a concrete date for the Barrow Hill event, but to see several in one place will be brilliant and the nature of the round house will still allow those not in steam to star.
  24. I very rarely, if ever, make a pre-order on the day of an announcement, but I have done today. Just under £200 from my local, with PECO Prince/Princess at £130, it feels a reasonable price difference for what appears to be a larger and higher spec model. Superb announcement!
  25. There was a OO shed layout called something like Chiddleton/Chiddlington in a Railway Modeller in 2003 or 2004. I wonder if anyone else remembers it? I've got rid of all of my RMs so I can no longer reference it, but it was my most read edition as a child! From memory it had a large station and depot on one side, a smaller mainline country station on the other and and incline up to a further set of sidings. Stock was mostly southern region steam but there was modern image too. It was like a personal version of my club, Rusper, which has a series of stations across 6 sheds. I remember the last time I looked back at the article, it hasn't aged so well compared to the many layouts seen nearly 20 years later, but it was exciting at the time to a young teenager!
