  1. Great to see J1568 Dave, the final day of GC working between Rugby and Nottingham. I travelled from Rugby to Leicester and back that day and do wonder if I was on the train in the photo. However, a small point, I did the trip on Saturday 3rd May. The 5th May (a Monday) is given as the closure date in the records as no trains ran from that date onwards. There was no Sunday service. I'd love to be able to do the journey again, Rugby used to have two train lines to Leicester, now we have none. The bus today takes ages so is it any wonder people use cars? Graham, listening to the Stones singing 'Wild Horses' and getting sentimental for the old days.
  2. I inadvertently marked a thread as read but can't undo it; I'd like to be able to see the unread posts. I've been into account settings and can't find anything there. Anyone know how to do it? Thanks Graham
  3. Saw another one in Ireland today. The track was 3ft gauge, but the stock was not - the 3ft West Clare Railway also has standard gauge stock in storage. It's at Moyasta in south Clare but I didn't have time to explore further as we had a ferry to catch. Graham
  4. I saw this one today. The rails are further apart than standard and a slightly different view suggests we are in Ireland. Turning around, one can see the original site of the station. It is Fenit, in Kerry. Graham
  5. I visited the museum and running track in Listowel yesterday. Great value, 5 euros for a senior gets you entry to the museum and a ride on the train. The staff are all volunteers and lovely people. Graham
  6. Owencarrow viaduct today. Taken from a roadside pull-in where there is info and memorabilia from the 1925 disaster. Graham
  7. I climbed Errigal mountain today and you can see the old railway formation in the landscape. It was a bit hazy but the line is still traceable. This is crossing keepers cottage #16 by the N56, looking towards Gweedore. The trackbed curves in from above the road and crosses it by the cottage. And this is Cashelnagore station. The trackbed is obvious as the straight line from the NE. After passing the station it is more obscure as it curves away to the west. Crossing keeper cottage #14. I stopped by here yesterday but the trackbed can't be seen from road level. From high up though, you can see the formation to the left of the road. Graham
  8. Thanks for these articles Roger. We're going to Falcarragh on Saturday for a week's stay and I hope to explore bits of the old railway. I'm pleasantly surprised that there is still so much to see. Graham
  9. I was out walking in the Trossachs today, it would seem the local wildlife need to be literate. Graham
  10. I visited the Wieliczka salt mine near Krakow last week and in the visitor centre at the end of the tour was this model railway. At this point you are still over 130m below ground. There appears to be two gauges but unfortunately it wasn't working when I was there. The photos are a bit iffy as it was a bit dark down there and the layout is surrounded by glass so there are light reflections in the pics. Are there any deeper model layouts that anyone knows about? Graham
  11. If the chalk date (1909) is correct then this is five years before WW1. Was first aid training and practice routine on the railways at this time?
  12. Carry on as you are please Tim, I thoroughly enjoyed this weeks episode about two places that, on the surface, don't appear too exciting. One of the attractions of the series is finding out about hidden gems. SWMBO and myself are hoping to do a tour of Manchester, Goole and Lincoln later this year, though I see Leeds and Hull are in future programmes so we may have to extend the trip by a few days. Thanks for everything Graham
  13. Me and SWMBO had a great day out today. A good model railway exhibition, a steam train ride, a tram ride, curry for lunch. There were quite a few dogs there but I didn't tread in any poo......
  14. Terrific programme tonight. Me and SWMBO are intending a day trip to Manchester in the summer, me to do some trainspotting at those three viaducts, she to walk the garden viaduct and do some plant spotting. Win-win. Graham
  15. My thoughts exactly. I used to own a 1969 Austin Mini Countryman (not a traveller) and it had the wooden windows. Graham
  16. Not been on this thread for years but has anyone seen this? Lima/Kit Built OO Gauge BR Class 52 Western Loco Maroon D4160 "Great Western" | eBay
  17. There is a group of five of us travelling to Pontefract on Sunday, but only two of us will be going in to the exhibition. The others would like to have a coffee etc in the cafe - can they do this without having to pay to get into the show? Cheers, Graham
  18. C4707 Can someone please ID the type of van at the rear of the 101 DMU for me please? Thanks Graham
  19. Yes there was, I forget what it was called. I don't live in Bedworth anymore (not since 1968!) but I did visit the shop when it was open. Graham
