  7. OK, I'll toss in this one I had on the old forum - ACL 325 is a Highliner A unit shell I painted/lettered/weathered; the B unit is ACL 324-B and is also a Highliner shell.

  9. Here's one I did some years ago. You may be aware that in the 1940s that both Baldwin and Lima offered centre cab "transfer" units. Each end had a diesel of 1000-1250 hp for a total of 2000-2500 hp. Now, let's imagine that for some reason EMD decided to get into this market, and that this was before the GP7 was introduced...which means EMD might have done it with the BL2. And thus emerges...the BLT: BL Transfer...no, not a bacon/lettuce/tomato sandwich. Two Life Like BL2s gave their shells; a pair of Athearn Tunnel Motors gave their frames (yeah yeah wrong trucks for 1940s - so go build your own ). Splicing occurred, painting and a lot of wasp striping yielded this: This is the original BLT, done before Jim Teese did his which was published in Model Railroading. My No. 33 has a honkin' great can motor in it, extra weight, and a Mars light on the near end. It runs very smoothly and will pull the white off of rice...and confuses the casual train show attendees most effectively. Oh, and Rock Creek is a fictitious line of mine.

  14. A curiosity here is that the 70s are being moved from the factory at Erie, Pennsylvania to port on flat cars and not on their own wheels. The Class 66s are moved on their own wheels...

    Heljan Kestrel is here

I chipped my Kestrel last night. I wanted full and independent control of both headcode boxes and both sets of red lights. To that end I fitted an NCE DA-SR decoder, completely gutting out the factory board. I had not seen the info on lowering the light intensity but as I put the model on the track to check that I'd gotten the direction right and the polarity right on the red LEDs, I noted said red LEDs were laser beam bright and that the little surface mount resistor on the LED's board got hot enough in seconds to scorch my fingers. I thought This Is Bad and fitted a 470 ohm resistor in series to each light - the small resistors do not even get warm to the touch now. The NCE decoder has 1K ohm resistors on board for LEDs but I didn't try them...because I'd forgotten they were there until after I'd finished Anyway, looks good, runs good...I like it!
