  1. Thanks Pete. Hopefully it will generate a bit of interest and offer something a bit different. In trying to keep things simple, all being well I can capture some of the flavour of the original Juniper Hill. The London Transport livery on the Panniers does look very smart. However as I alluded to previously, they almost reverted to BR black. Never say Never... (I don't think Pierce Brosnan appeared in that one?..) Cheers, Mark
  2. Thanks for your comments Ian. Interesting link to Juniper Top. Looks like an interesting building in beautiful countryside. I would agree that a tip would not be appreciated in this setting. Cheers, Mark
  3. For my next project I wanted to try to capture the workings of London Transport's Pannier Tanks especially their trips to Croxley/Watford tip. Waste was brought up from the London Underground network. This would have included general waste as well as railway generated by products. As some of you may know around 10 years ago I built a very simple layout based on the Northamptonshire ironstone railways called Juniper Hill. Again trying to revert to the principles of Juniper Hill, I thought I would build a layout that captured the essence of Croxley tip. In this instance the infamous Ikea Lack shelf provides the baseboard. A small Lack shelf will be used for the staging yard. The layout is called Juniper Hill Tip as a bit of an homage to its forebears. Keeping things simple I am using Peco Code 100 trackwork and Insulfrogs. The layout will be free standing and lit with LED lighting. The ex-GWR 57xx Pannier tanks which London Transport acquired from British Railways looked very smart in their lined out livery. The familiar form of the Pannier is transformed in its new paintwork. Obviously as time progressed the Panniers certainly took on a work weary patina. Perhaps an understatement. The excellent book Red Panniers, by Scott-Morgan and Martin (2008) published by Lightmoor Press is a very good introduction to their service with London Transport and the people who worked on them. Bachmann have produced a number of London Transport liveried Panniers over the past 20 years or so. Quite sort after on the pre-owned market it is good to know the excellent Bachmann spares department can supply you with a new London Transport Pannier bodyshell and matching wheelsets if you have a donor to convert. Steve at Railtec Transfers also produces a set of replacement numbers if required. Above is a Bachmann London Transport BR built brake van. Again very much sort after. Above is a the old Kitmaster/Airfix/Dapol brake van finished in London Transport livery using Revell acrylics and the sadly no longer available Modelmaster London Transport wagon transfer set. The withdrawal of the Panniers in 1971 meant the end of steam on the Underground. London Transport obtained three previously owned 6 wheeled Sentinel diesel locomotives which had worked at Corby ironstone quarries (Going full circle back to the original Juniper Hill) to replace the Panniers. Refurbished they had dumb buffers fitted to help with the mounting of the standard London Transport Ward-Lock coupler. Hornby produce a model of one of the trio (L81) incorporating these modifications. Very good it is to. Similar to the BR Class 03's, the Sentinel's could not activate track circuits so a tender was attached with a trip cock. This was made from an old 'Q' trailer stock bogie. They were fitted with hinged buffers as well as the Ward-Lock coupling. Thankfully CDC Designs have produced a 3D printed tender to assist with a prototype Sentinel formation. Today I have cut the track work ready for laying. Test running has been successful and shows the operating potential of the layout. Over the course of the build of the layout I will discuss the general build, scenics and look at detailing the stock, including the modifications the Panniers received to work on the Underground's old Metropolitan lines. Cheers, Mark
  4. I do believe she was booked in for a night at the Shuck so no taxi required... *No Taxi Required...That renowned Phil Collins album...🙉
  5. Saturday night 'Shuck' delivery at Stoke Doyle Goods.. Think the Shuckburgh Arms is going to be busy this evening.. Cheers, Mark * No layout lighting turned on hence the shadows...
  6. Excellent service from Derails once more. Both of their special edition Forest of Dean related wagons arrived this morning. Posted yesterday and arrived in West Yorkshire today. Great work between Derails and Rapido in producing these two excellent wagons. Cheers, Mark
  7. Derails 'Forest of Dean' special editions arrived this morning. Excellent Rapido finish on both. These are both limited editions from Derails. Brilliant service from Derails. Well recommended. Cheers, Mark *Did I mention Derails????...
  8. Recently Hornby have released their 6 wheeled Sentinel in the guise of L81 which represents the first of three Sentinel's acquired second hand to replace the venerable LT Pannier tanks. Unfortunately with the prototypes their wheelbase was insufficient to operate track circuits on the main line. To address this a tender was attached fitted with a trip cock. The tenders were manufactured from 'Q' stock bogies. The tender and Sentinel carried conventional coupling gear as well as Ward-Lock couplings. This allowed the shunting of other Underground stock. Difficulties in fitting the Ward-Lock couplings made fitting of normal buffers to the Sentinel's problematic. To address this wooden buffers we're fitted to the Sentinel's front end with a Ward-Lock coupling. The tenders were able to accommodate Ward-Lock couplings as well as standard hinged oval buffers. CDC Kits have come to the rescue with a 3D printed tender. A choice of buffer positions are available. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225753447991?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=0CsmXNqgQWK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=MNMqJGNPSxi&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I chose the buffers down version. On arrival other than paint and couplings the kit is ready to go. Unless... If you look at prototype pictures of these tenders coupled to the Sentinel's you will see tender runs at the same height as the Sentinel's buffer beam. The CDC kit is supplied running on 12mm Dapol wagon wheels. This then gives a stepped appearance between tender/Sentinel. To address this holes were drilled out for brass axle bearings. Then Gibson 10mm Lowmac were fitted which lowers the ride height of the tender correcting it. In using tension lock couplings, lowering the tender then ensures coupling height is the same as the representation of the Ward-Lock coupling housings on the tender. As you can see from the photo below markings have been set out for drilling holes for Bachmann NEM fitting tension locks. Finer handrails will be soldered up for the tender as well to match the Sentinel. Livery wise on the prototype the tender was finished in black with a red buffer beam, white handrails and collector shoes. More soon once I've fired up the soldering iron. Cheers, Mark
  9. Very nicely finished Mike. Thankfully, my two are not in the tricycle league with all four wheels on the track. It does sound as if the older Airfix kits are the way to go. Keep those eyes peeled. Cheers, Mark
  10. So would these be most suitable for sticking under an Airfix Siphon G or H? Asking for a friend who has a couple waiting in the wings....
  11. I never realised Andy was around in the post war period hanging around Brent. Amazing the lure of the Pack Horse and Pannier..
  12. I was almost tempted as well Tony by the DJH 84xxx. Wellingborough (15A) shed inherited two members of the class (84005/84006) in later years at times. I believe they may have worked the Uppingham branch trains from Seaton, Rutland as well. Like the Standard Class 3MT 77xxx 2-6-0's, the Standard Class 2MT 84xxx are locos I am interested in. Do you have any pictures of the 84xxx running on Little Bytham Tony? Also, has a Standard Class 3MT 77xxx ever run on Little Bytham? Cheers, Mark
  13. Well worth watching. Thanks for posting Jesse. Cheers, Mark

  21. I did the same as well Neil. One to ponder with the origins of these Atlas European Trams. Recently I was looking for Trumpter 1:72 Scale Westland Wyvern and Gannet kits. Again not many available from the UK but plenty available from China. I guess these could be unofficial runs as well? Cheers, Mark
  22. I would agree totally. Lovely music. Could it be Richard Clayderman per chance?..
  23. Very nice work CK and a sympathetic restoration of the original build. They certainly capture the presence of a 8750 nicely. Thanks for sharing the rebuild of this pair. Cheers, Mark
