  1. Is there any update on delivery of the EWS maroon version?
  2. There looks to be 4 of the large domino dots in the picture, enough for both ends as the split- box locos had one dot in each box
  3. Mike, I have a feeling the 3 Capitals sets weren't fitted with ADD
  4. Are these trains not fitted with ADD, or is the distance between the end of the OLE and the bridge insufficient to allow the ADD to be effective in time?
  5. Been there, done that a number of times at same location and same traction - only got soaked once and worked to Donny in underpants and shirt (trousers and jacket draped over the train heat boiler to dry out) hoping I didn't have to use an SPT.
  6. If DB were to do retro liveries I think I would prefer them to apply it to the class 60s
  7. Thinking about it again I think the on/off switch may have been dim/bright hence removing the bulbs on an overnight as they would be on whenever the guard switched on the train lighting
  8. I think you are correct - the large brass knob was for the heating and there was an on/off switch above the sliding compartment door for the compartment ceiling lights. There were also individual lights with their own switch on the wall above the seats (can't remember if these were only in first class or in second as well). Removing the ceiling light bulbs and closing the blinds usually resulted in a reasonable sleep on overnights!
  9. True on both counts, it was just an idle thought although he would have to drive past the airport to get to the railway station as it's located at the end of a cut-de-sac alongside some old hangers
  10. David, the '68 manning agreement had more conditions than those I and Ken W have alluded to. For example there were restrictions for single manned turns on distance travelled non-stop and number of hours continuous without a break - for KX men any first stop Doncaster or York runs may have breached either or both of these conditions hence needing a secondman, and these could have been the turns you accompanied your Uncle on, especially if he was in the Top Link.
  11. There is still a 14.56 on a Sunday in the new timetable - I wonder if you could claim a taxi as a replacement if the station is closed for repairs? That would be more convenient for the airport as you could get the taxi to drop off/pick up at the terminal building!
  12. Teesside Airport station is not quite closed yet Mark. One train a week (Hartlepool to Darlington) in one direction only still calls there although I doubt anyone uses it. There are still platforms in each direction but the footbridge has been condemned so you cannot access the Middlesbrough direction platform.
  13. We had some single manned turns at Gateshead, generally trains formed of air con stock. There were double manned turns with air cons as well where one leg of the diagram was a steam heat set, or where there wasn't sufficient time for a PNB to comply with single manning agreement, or our London lodge turns - from at least 1974 when I started until HSTs took over we worked the 10.00 (Scotsman) and the 18.00 (Newcastle Executive) out of Kings Cross
  14. Didn't realise they had moved the ETH holder to where the steam heat pipe used to be.
  15. Class 40 tail lights operated opposite end, class 45/46 same end (each tail light had its own switch) - not sure about 31s - as above, it's a long time since I worked on any of these. I see on the Bachmann thread that their new 47 illuminates both tail lights so somebody is going to be busy with the black marker pen!
  16. Yes they were dual-heated and air braked so good behind any steam or electric heat fitted loco during the heating period and anything air-braked in the summer.
  17. Alan 'Pansy' Potter - Gateshead driver, must have been conducting the Thornaby men on the traction as Gateshaed men didn't sign Whitby.
  18. Not sure how to do links to YouTube but if you search for 'YRP North East: A look at GBRf's class 69 modification project with Bob Tiller' this gives a good explanation by GBRf's Engineering Director as to why and how it was done (he mentions that DB wouldn't sell him any class 60s).
  19. It was Countrylife - 'We are the boys from Countrylife and you'll never put a better bit of butter on your knife.....'
  20. Ken, Are all sets cleared now as I'd heard that there were still some interference issues with the 5 car sets and the pure electric version of the 9 car?
  21. Quite a few still between Knaresborough and Poppleton on the Harrogate - York line.
  22. Ken, Yesterday afternoon 801201 departed North from Darlington on electric, have they now got electrical clearance through to Newcastle? It looked like most of the carriages were only fitted with skeleton seats (no seat or back cushions) although I couldn't get a close-up view as the train wasn't on a platform line. Graham
