The Class 26 is a favourite of mine, I retain fond memories of trips with them in the Highlands to Kyle , Mallaig, Fort William and Inverness in the 1970s. It is so good to see them being looked after by an expert with such practical skills.
The holes for the fittings in the lower seam form a pattern , I think it is for a reassembly key, so the panel always refitted with the same orientation as constructed.

In the era of Bachmann diesels at £35 - £40 new, S/H Lima diesels that were of near-zero value, in the interval of Bachmann escalating from £35 to beyond and above the £120+ price tag, those Lima products have acquired a respectable value by the trickle down effect, just check out Ebayprices for yourself. It is therefore a worthwhile exercise to resurrect those old models, the 73 is a favourite of mine, the bodyshell of the 73 and the 31 possess plenty of appeal, it is simply the mechanisms which spoil the picture. As an alternative to a screwdriver to scrape away the Mazak to enlarge the axle slot, could the slot be ground away with valve grinding paste ( motor cars) and a scrap axle or a dowel of the suitable diameter.
Hornby retailers sell a tool for crank axle nuts, the part number has slipped my memory
