  1. Unexpected trip to Bo'ness today!

  2. Wishing I'd never done that research on brick bonds... drawing up even a basic brick hut and having to get the bond and layout just right...

    1. Hroth

      Hroth

Just get some random brickpaper. The bond fanatics are even more picky than rivet-counters.

But nobody is telling me that it's wrong, and now I know what's right, I won't be happy if the finished model is obviously (to me) wrong!

  3. That wonderful feeling when a box of kits you've waited a month for arrives... and they're the wrong kits in the box! Sending them back, try again.

  4. My resolve was weak... I have just ordered a Hattons Barclay!

I'm in for one, I've resisted getting it a "friend"...

I was resisting until I saw the video posted today, good marketing Hatton's! Still, I think industrials look right as a pair :-)

Did you use a Barclaycard for doing so?

  5. Well that was a productive sleepless evening - one wagon kit built, painted and finished, one fully built, and a third about half done!

For all you insomniacs just 10 more sleeps until Xmas

    2. Captain Kernow

      Captain Kernow

I initially read that as a 'sleeperless evening', so I assumed you hadn't been doing track work.

  6. Got some lovely Gibson trailing wheels on a 2mm axle for my D1, but the bushings in the chassis kit (already fitted) are for 1/8" axles, and nobody else seems to do 18mm non-driving wheels.

Yes and I think someone does 1/8th to 2mm stepped axles, I'll look it up after lunch out.

That's very helpful, thanks to both of you!

  7. Lovely parcel of kits and castings just arrived from 5&9 models. Very impressed with the service and the parts look nice too!

      Metr0Land

      Are they somewhere near Brighton?

    2. Skinnylinny

5&9 Models? They do LBSCR models, but actually based in Shropshire!

  8. Been commissioned to paint a lovely 5" gauge NER E class 0-6-0T. Now if only I could work out what colours to paint it!

      NER Darlington Green?

    2. Skinnylinny

      Skinnylinny

It's the lining I'm having trouble with - all the photos of Es (J71s) are lined differently and in obviously different colours from the pictures of E1s (J72s) which have what I would call standard NER lining. But all the photos are in black and white!

  9. Had the email that my Hornby H class is in the post. Excitement!

Mine was in Warrington sorting office yesterday so hopefully arriving today, looking forward to it.

I am very happy for all of you expecting these lovely models.

  10. Just received my first package from Narrow Planet. Very impressed at the quality and the service!

      Jintyman

I totally agree, quality is excellent and the service outstanding.

Just about all of Talyllyn's station signage has been done by them. ;)

  11. Is pondering a repaint of a Bachmann E4 into Improved Engine Green...

    1. BlueLightning

      BlueLightning

There is a lot of work to do to the Bachmann E4 to back date into IEG condition!!

    2. Skinnylinny

      Skinnylinny

Even from the LBSC umber version? Darn, I was hoping I could get away with just removing some lamp irons...

    3. Horsetan

      Horsetan

You're looking at changing the smokebox to a built-up one, plus a tapered chimney and new safety valves (I think), at least. The bunker probably needs the coal rails taken off as well.

  13. When you buy a model online and it arrives, only to find it is older than you are! The box had a sticker "Made in the DDR", which ceased to exist a year before I was born...

Yup, a Piko Saxonia. What a beautiful model!

    3. Horsetan

      Horsetan

I remember when we still had the DDR. I was surprised to find that it produced cheap model locos compared to other HO manufacturers of the day. A Br.03 "Reko" was only about £35 to £40 back in 1988...

  14. Sometimes it just takes a chat with a fellow enthusiast to bring the modelling mojo back!

  15. Those new Bachmann birdcage coaches in SE&CR livery look rather gorgeous, but £195 RRP for a set of three! Guess I'd better start saving now!

You are right they are very very nice!! I am getting the H Class from my local model shop for that price! But even with the discounts he would be able to give me I can't justify it :( Perhaps I will get some second hand in the future. Until then, I have managed SECR loco lining before so the coaches should be easy!!

    3. Skinnylinny

      Skinnylinny

I'm envious of your abilities at lining then! Even with the S E Finecast SECR transfers I'm not particularly happy with mine... They seem rather over-scale.

    4. BlueLightning

      BlueLightning

Thanks, but before you get to envious why don't you judge for yourself. After all just because I'm happy with it doesn't mean someone else would be. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/107470-oak-hill-lbscr-secr-1905ish/page-38#entry2767340

  17. $!*&! Messed up applying LSWR lettering from the HMRS pressfix sheet... and there's only one set of each size of lettering per sheet... Another £7.50 to get another sheet of mostly Southern lettering I won't use!

    1. devondynosoar118

      devondynosoar118

Maybe try and find a southern modeller with the LSWR half to trade with?

PM me the sheet number, I might have some spare ...

  18. Where on Earth do pre-grouping modellers get transfers from? I am looking for LSWR, SECR and LBSCR loco lining and lettering in 4mm and can't find anything...

I can't see LBSC loco insignia though, just freight stock, others may know though. Glad to help!

      stephennicholson

I am similarly fustrated. Did chat to HMRS about LBSC and they do have something in the pipeline - so worth feedback to them what you are after ... but probably a year away. However do look at EBM models at http://www.mjwsjw.co.uk/

I make my own! (LBSCR & SECR)Commission orders are available

  19. Things nobody tells you as a young person modelling pre-grouping: Platforms without white edges look weird!

  20. One very pretty little Peckett found its way under my tree. Thank you, Hornby!

  21. Apparently has a Peckett waiting under the tree...

  23. You know you're on an early train when you get overtaken by the Caledonian Sleeper!

  24. That wonderful moment when you realise that yes, the three wagon kits you bought come with transfers, but they're all Pressfix...

  25. Messing about with a laser cutter at the local Hackerspace and evaluating it for producing wagon bodies...
