  1. Had a walk down the Whittle line last night, to check on the gooseberries, probably not the best year, but there will be enough to brighten the winter months with fruit crumbles…hopefully the good Mr PMP will have represented the gooseberry bushes of Whittle in his hedgerows…
  2. Don’t go picking on my trainset Mr Infantry…it may be small but its perfectly formed…
  3. Hi Gobbler, There is a full set of drawings in the NRM at York. You can book into the reading room and ask for the drawings to be made available (in advance) and then photograph the drawings for your own personal use...drawing numbers here...(use 'control and F' to locate the '13t hopper' drawings)... https://www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/sites/default/files/2019-01/London %26 North Eastern Carriage and Wagon.pdf Cheers Duncan
  4. All planned Uncle P, we’re going to send you off in the same way that Great Uncle Roy went…straight up the chimney of the Q6
  5. Now gents, thats a class looking model right there...perhaps the 1st in a range of magnesite/dolomite wagons?...I can think of at least one UK prototype thats just begging to be produced...
  6. Nothing to stop you going into full scale production mode Uncle Poursea, thanks to Great Uncle F...put me down for a good dozen please.
  7. Oh I do like a Class 31...and heres a lovely picture of one at Norwich from Steve Wakefield's excellent Flickr site...the Class 31 btw is the loco lurking just above that rather natty former Conflat L TDB50606...now if only (you know the rest).
  8. ...you watch, Uncle P won't be able to contain himself with this pic from seacoaler's flickr site...
  9. ...don't worry about going off topic for a while, no one shouts at you here...and our Uncle Poursea has a bit of a reputation for drifting on and off topic...so long as we get back to 16 tonners, eventually. From Martin Smiths excellent Flickr site...from which I found a link to this "off topic" gem (emgee63's flickr site) (there's a 2nd Ashworth Kirk pic in there for timber fans)
  10. Is it me or is the RCTS archive getting bigger all the time? https://rcts.zenfolio.com/rolling-stock/br ..a great place to look through period photos from the 50s and 60s with a good sprinkling of 16 tonners...get comfy with a coffee and enjoy the show (you can also buy prints of your favs). Armchair modelling at its best.
  11. Is the hopper on the far left one of Porcy's cut down ex-coke hoppers? Kella pit was so far off the beaten track, not many people seem to have visited with a camera...and sadly I was more interested in the ex-LNER hoppers and ignored the NCB ones completely.
  12. One of these chaps is a look-a-like stunt double for Uncle Porsea...in fact last time he was on the toon he was having to fight off the lasses wanting their bosoms autographed...and, weirdly, not a single one of them under the age of 60...
  13. Back in the 70s, In the next street to our good friend Poursea lived a kid who learnt to recognize any variety of baked bean by eating just one bean (we tested him and he was bean perfect)...in modern parlance, he was a baked bean aficionado. His favorite variety was the HP bean. Also, if you dropped your small change he would tell you how much you had dropped (correct to the penny - we tested that as well). Its no wonder Uncle Pousea is the way he is, its in the water I suspect.
  14. Its funny what turns up when you least expect it... 16tonners with German markings and used to transport plucky British POWs... Fast forward to 2.30
  15. This may take sometime...so make a cup of tea, get comfy and enjoy the show (enter at your perygl) https://museum.wales/media-dams/4bd9afcc-395a-30bc-8963-78f8db0b5640/large/ ...nice 16 tonners https://museum.wales/collections/online/?field0=string&value0=railway%2C negative&field1=with_images&value1=1 ...the rest of the collection (also check out the other categories, there are some lovely aerial photos of Sunderland in here?)
  16. Some 50 years ago we had a letter writing competition at school and 9 year old me wrote to Blue Peter suggesting they added some paper mache scenery to the Blue Peter model railway to make it more realistic (remember the BP model railway?)...well I got a reply from Biddy Baxter saying they would be including this in a future programme and I had been awarded a Blue Peter badge for my suggestion. Sadly though I didn't win the competition, despite my name being read out on a national kids tv progaramme, as 2 girls had written to the BBC and got an invite to Top of the Pops and a chance to meet Jimmy Saville... I lost the Blue Peter badge over the years, however it turned up after my dads death, he had kept it in his tin of WWII medals.
  17. ...not sure how sensible this share is as it might give Hornby some ideas... Steam Punk tick Smoke effect tick Firebox glow tick Sound effects tick ...and more flames than an out of control e-cigarette.
  18. I can attest to this event having taken place as I was present at Uncle Poursea's home to view his 'manic 25'...even now I still can't stop laughing...the smoke unit exhausted through the roof vents to a height of around 4 feet ...sadly it also exhausted from every other orifice with the same force. It is/was a work of genius, sadly flawed, but genius none the less. Please Uncle P, dig out the 'manic 25' and make a video to share with us all. (I have a brand new fire extinguisher I'm happy to lend for the duration of filming.)
  19. Nice bit of 'old grey' from 1959... https://www.flickr.com/photos/taffytank/51545327562/in/dateposted/
  20. ...You can't surf in peace without one popping up in a corner or sneaking into the shot, like here from Malcolm Slater's flickr site.
  21. The Darlington Chemical and Insulation works (at Darlington) was rail served up until the late 70s or possibly the very early 80s... https://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/en/image/EPW029512
  22. ...the view from the top (from 'Sheila' on Flickr) ...and the broken haulage 'engine'... (from 'Sheila' on Flickr)
  23. Rua Reidh Lighthouse, Gairloch, Scotland. Narrow gauge railway incline from the quay...with sturdy buffer stops. The rails were secured to the occasional wooden cross sleeper and then concreted up to the underside of the rail...which is why you can still make out the ghost shadows of the rails.
  24. https://www.vintagecarriagestrust.org/magazines.htm ...and all in a good cause
  25. Thanks to the Darlington club for giving us a great show in a great venue...good to see a lot of old friends and some quality railways. Sometimes its the small things that mean so much to us all, full credit to 30368 (Richard B) of this parish, who built a model of NER G5 67305 in memory of Ray Goad and then presented the model to the Darlington club to run on Ray's layout...well done that man for building such a fine model and for all his kindness.
