Coketown is a medium sized town in Lancashire on the West Coast Mainline. It's set in the modern era but wth a lot of old buildings still around. I wanted to have lots of red brick and grey stone, some chimneys and rolling hills in the background. I also wanted to have a viaduct somewhere on the layout similar to that in Accrington or Burnley.

Another requirement was gently curving tracks as far as possible to avoid the mass of tracks parallel to the front board edge. The first layout was drawn on Coreldraw in about 2006 and has not changed a lot since. The name Coketown is from the town in Dickens' Hard Times which might have been loosely based on Preston.

The left hand end of the layout is a goods yard above the mainline (north?) and a couple of carriage sidings below (south?). The mainline enters as a pair and then both tracks have access to a loop where goods can either sit before rejoining the mainline in the middle or can continue on the loop at the back of the station all the way to the other end of the layout. At the right hand end of the layout is Coketown station. It has loop platforms for both directions and a terminus platform on the south side of the station. The terminus platform has access to the carriage sidings separate to the mainline. The goods loop on the north side of the station acts as a headshunt for the goods yard and loco stabling on the north side of the layout. The goods yard might have to have some container loading to justify its continued existence these days! The small spur in the goods yard is a private scrap yard under the arches.

In between the yard end and the station there are enough crossovers to allow access to the terminus platform and some direct access to the carriage sidings from both up and down. A double slip at the other end of the station allows access to the yard from that end.

At the back of the layout and above is a seperate single line carried over the valley on a viaduct about 27 arches long (currently). That line will run 1 and 2 car DMUs on a shuttle.
